The most recent tragedy was the eye injury Toronto Maple Leaf's defenseman Bryan Berard received. Just one week after turning 23, Berard was struck in the face Marion Hossa's stick, opening an inch-wide gash in Berard's eye. Although this was purely unintentional, it is still a threat that players face on a daily basis. At this point, Berard is barely able to distinguish between light and dark. Berard's doctor feels there is little chance of Berard ever regaining sight in his eye and points out that

NO ONE CAN SAY BRYAN Berard is the kind of guy to take the money and run. He couldn'the loves hockey too much. That love of the sport has led the 24-year-old defenseman to undergo seven operations on an eye that was gruesomely injured in March 2000, give back the lion's share of a $6.5 million insurance settlement he received when it looked like he would never play again, and come to the New York Rangers camp on nothing more than a tryout contract. "I love the game of hockey. That's why I'm doing it," Berard says. On March 11, 2000, the question wasn't whether Berard would ever play againit was whether he'd ever see out of his right eye again. While playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in Ottawa, he was hit accidentally in the eye by Marian Hossa's stick. Blood streamed from the eye, and there appeared to be little question that a career that began with being selected No. 1 overall by Ottawa in 1995 and winning the Calder Trophy on Long Island two years later was over. But Berard wasn't so willing to go quietly.

Sporting News, The

All anyone could talk about before the season were the Bruins' losses. The team that had finished the regular season first in the Eastern Conference lost forward Bill Guerin. It let goaltender Byron Dafoe walk away as an unrestricted free agent. It watched defenseman Kyle MeLaren refuse to report, demanding a trade. This team didn't have a chance. Nobody talked positively about what the Bruins added in the offseason. New goalie Steve Shields? A backup at best. Defenseman Bryan Berard? A question mark coming off a decent season after missing all of 2000-01 with a career-threatening eye injury. Well, Shields has been solid in tandem with John Grahame and with a little help from rookie Tim Thomas. Whether the goaltending can bold up will be a question all season. Joe Thornton is leading the league's best offense, even without Guerin. And, of all people, Berard helps keep it going.

Since this story first aired on Marketplace, the Canadian Hockeu Association alerted players and coaches to make sure all sticks carry enough tape to prevent the butt end from passing through the grid of a mask. And the CSA has set up a task force to review face mask safety. Berard's injury brought the issue of face protection to the forefront of the hockey world yet again. The league won't change its rules to force players to wear visors. Only a few do. In minor hockey, much more has been done to protect our children. Great strides have been taken to ensure that kids playing hockey are as safe as they can be. There are non-contact rules for young players, serious penalties for hitting from behind, and better and safer equipment. But some parents believe we can do better still.

Bertuzzi to stay in Vancouver for at least four more seasons...
With Todd Bertuzzi's self imposed deadline now almost three weeks past, the Canucks brass finally inked the superstar to a contract extension on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Bertuzzi signed a four-year contract worth $27.9 million (all figures in US currency) that is in effect immediately. Bertuzzi's contract for this year was terminated and replaced by the new deal. The star right-winger for the Canucks said he's glad to remain in Vancouver.
"I've always wanted to stay here in Vancouver and I never wanted to go anywhere else," Bertuzzi told the Vancouver Province. "This is my home, this is where my kids were born and this is where I became the player that I am right now... I'm really excited that it's done. We both stated that I wanted to stay here and they wanted to have me here. When you have two parties who are committed to that, you can take a step forward and get things done a lot easier."
Bertuzzi was in the final year of his contract and was set to earn a base salary of $3.7 million this season. That contract was terminated, and replaced with the new deal which will see the 6-foot-3, 245 pounder now earn $4.3 million this season. He will earn $6.633 million next season and $6.933 million the last two seasons. The contract also gives Bertuzzi a $2.5 million signing bonus this year and he will get another $500,000 next year. If there is a lockout next season, Bertuzzi will earn $8.7 million and if there is a two-year lockout, he will earn $10.5 million.

    Mar 9, 04 - 2:33 PM last minute trade
I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this trade:
I would get Gonchar and Marian Hossa or McCabe and Zednick
i need goals, assists, and PP. My +/- isnt too bad and I dont think Gonchars will be as bad with the bruins. So basically is Zednick going to keep it up or should I go for Hossa for the stretch? Thanks reboston

    Sharks double up Hawks 6-3
    2/19/04 - by Mike Lee
The Sharks took advantage of a dazed and confused Chicago Blackhawks team on Thursday night in Chicago, capping their six-game road trip with a 6-3 win. The Blackhawks dealt team captain Alexei Zhamnov hours before the game, and the effects were spread across the Blackhawks lineup during the game. The Sharks on the other hand settled themselves from a 7-3 thrashing the night before to finish off their road trip with a .500 showing. The win also pushed the Sharks lead back to eight points in the Pacific Division Race.

Kovalchuk's Cap Collection Geez. The Thrasher's season looked over before it started, what with the death of Dan Snyder and Dany Heatley's involvement.
But the personal horror of it all aside, Atlanta is hot. They're undefeated at home. And Ilya Kovalchuk put up his second hat trick of the week against the Predators
His last one was October 18 against the Blackhawks
I, like a lot of other people, thought the Thrashers would crash due to a leadership vacuum. Instead, Kovalchuk has stepped into Heatley's skates big time. True, it might be an emotional rush from a very trying season. But I think it has more to do with Atlanta coaches, past and present, trying to teach Kovalchuk defensive responsibility. It seems to be keeping his head in the game more.
Oh. And Kovalchuk didn't have the only hat trick last night. Peter Forsberg also took one home , as the Avs beat the Oilers 6-1.
I guess they're not missing Paul Kariya yet. Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, October 24, 2003, 08:02 AM Kariya Hurts Wrist Well you get what you pay for.
