World Cadet Chess Championship
France held an event for players under 17 years of age and in 1977 it was recognized by FIDE as the World Championship for Cadets. The word cadet has nothing to do with rifles, but is a French term identifying this particular age group. Up to then the only recognized youth division was Junior - Under 20. A few years later, the age limit was changed to under-16, but since FIDE ages are now standardized to be one's age at the beginning of the year (rather than the dates when the tournament takes place), there's some overlap with the older rules. In recent years (for example 1992 at Duisburg) the Cadet seems to have been integrated into the World Youth Championships (under-10, -12, -14 ) and later -18 with separate competitions for Boys and Girls. In 1995, while the Under-10 -12 and -14 took place in St. Lorenzo, the Cadet was separate, in Guarapuava. From 2002 there was a World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad for national teams. The first one took place in Kuala Lumpur. Thanks to Hugh Brodie and to Miguel Bailly Badiola. A lot of results are still missing, and

Collections of Chess Games
These are often books about chess tournaments or chess championships, or the best games of individual players. I am only recommending my favorites. Use the links to check out what others have said about these books at Amazon. Please note that only the first of these would be helpful for children or absolute beginners (and, unfortunately, it is out of print and expensive). Still, the fastest way to improve? To play through game collections just like these!
1000 Best Short Games of Chess , Irving Chernev. A new edition of this classic will hopefully soon make it affordable for the young generation. We tell young players to play through games to improve, and these are short works of art to enjoy.
Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 , Mikhail Tal. This is, perhaps, the best chess book ever written. The games are wonderful. Tal's notes are full of energy and enthusiasm. All of the games are from the 1960 World Championship match in which the younger Tal defeated the long standing champion. Here are the games from Tal - Botvinnik, 1960

"Shirov! (Best Games)"
Reviewed by Steve Lopez
You'd think that chess and video would make a terrific natural partnership. What could be better than enjoying a lecture by a great player in the privacy of your own home? While it's true that asking questions is an impossibility in this environment, you have the option of watching it at your own pace, using the "pause" and "rewind" buttons to review difficult areas of the analysis.
So I was pretty wary when I opened the box containing the five-tape series called Shirov! (Best Games) . I sat down with a remote in one hand, a cold drink in the other, and a bottle of No-Doze close at hand in case I needed to fight off sleep. After ten minutes of the first tape I realized that I was going to have to throw my past experiences and preconceptions straight out the nearest window.

Chess grandmaster Anand gets a hero's welcome in India
29 December 2000, Reuters (Also reports from TOI, Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune and PTI) NEW DELHI - Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand got a screaming welcome from fans proclaiming him "Mind King" as he arrived home on Friday after claiming the FIDE world chess crown. Anand was hailed as a national hero by officials on his return from Tehran where he beat Spain's Alexei Shirov to become the first Asian to win the FIDE world chess championship earlier this week. The 31-year-old was congratulated by President K. R. Narayanan at the presidential palace after boisterous fans welcomed him with banners at the airport proclaiming him "Mind King." "I'm thrilled at the reception I have received here," Anand said at a function where he was congratulated by India's Information Technology minister Pramod Mahajan. "I've been greeted so warmly by fans, sent thousands of e-mails. People came to me and said they were praying for me... it's all very touching and I sometimes get nervous that it may be too much to live up to," Anand said.
