In the 11th and final round, in Monte Carlo on Thursday, he beat Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria 1.5-0.5 to swell his points tally to 14.5 from 22 games and emerge triumphant. The former World champion, who did not play in the last year's traditional blindfold and rapid tournament, lost only one game, in blindfold against Morozevich, the winner of the 2002 edition. The blindfold tournament was won by Vladimir Kramnik, while Evgeny Bareev took first place in the rapid competition. The triumph was Anand's third in the unique tournament, which has one blindfold and one rapid game in each round. The Indian ace had earlier stamped his superiority in the event in 1997, when he won all the three titles at stake Rapid, Blindfold and Combined, and in 1994. Anand finished a full point ahead of nearest rivals Peter Leko of Hungary and 2001 champion Alexander Morozevich of Russia. Though Anand did not finish first in the individual rapid and blindfold categories, his steady performance in both was enough to net him the champion's crown.

I 'm the only person who has the right to challenge Kasparov"
Alexei Shirov gives his views on the proposed match between Kasparov and Kramnik
Interview by Hartmut Metz, May 2000, translation by Harald Fietz ( Figo more English chess articles by Hartmut Metz Alexei Shirov Alexei, in 1998 you beat Kramnik in Cazorla with a score of 5.5:3.5 in what was called the challengers' final, held after Anand refused to participate. Can you comment on the proposed world championship between Kasparov and Kramnik?
They have no right to call it a world championship. Of course, nobody can prevent them from playing a private match, as Kasparov did against Timman in Prague in 1998. Obviously you are not on good terms with the world's top 3. What's your view of Kasparov's behaviour?
How would you assess Anand's role?

He acted according to a rather cynical approach which from another angle may be called a practical principle: money talks. So far he has received 200,000 dollars without doing anything. I don't know what could possibly justify this sum. And what is Kramnik's part in the process?

But the Indian ace did win the rapid competition with 7.5 points, while Evegeny Bareev was half a point behind. Anand was fifth in blindfold and third overall.
In the final set of matches, the NIIT Brand Ambassador Anand set the ball rolling with a win over Boris Gelfand in the blindfold game and with Kramnik drawing Veselin Topalov and Morozevich drawing with Peter Svidler, the gap between the leaders and Anand came down to just half a point. However in the final rapid game, the Rapid King Anand was held to a draw by Gelfand, while Kramnik and Moro won against their respective opponents to stay a point ahead of Anand and snatch away the title he won last year.
The two leaders had a one point advantage when the final round of two games started. With the three main mini matches ending in a similar score of 1.5-0.5, the gap remained.

Linares 1998 Category XXI (avg rating 2752) The Linares Supertourney started Sunday the 22nd. This is a Category 21 event with an average ELO of 2752. The event is the second strongest tournament in history, the first being Las Palmas 1996, which had an average rating just 5 points higher. The contestants are the top 8 players in the world, with the exceptions of Karpov and Kamsky. Karpov had a fall out with the organizers last year when he accepted his invitation to play, but didn't show up due to him campaigning for election to the Russian parliament. Gata Kamsky, the 7th ranked player in the world, is at medical school and not currently an active player. Apparently all the players save Shirov signed an agreement which states they will not have any game agreed as a draw before move 40.

Welcome
This month the featured game is from the 1995 Donner Memorial. The players, 19 year old Judit Polgar and the creative and innovative Alexei Polgar, both played to win as a draw was never considered. Shirov plays a little too unsound and Polgar takes full advantage, forcing him to forego castling and struggle to hold the position. However, it is not to be for Shirov as he goes down in flames.
Joe's Chess Page also offers a large and useful selection of links to some of the most essential chess sites on the Internet. In addition, the Photo Gallery contains many pictures of some of the most interesting and influential players in history.
A recent addition to the Chess page is a library of some of the greatest games of all time. They are in .pgn format and can be downloaded at your convenience.
