TRADITION in the past had it that the Chess Olympiad was segregated into a "Men's" and "Women's" event however that's not the case these days (though we still refer to it as the "Men's" event) thanks to the playing strength and determination of one particular female player: Hungary's Judit Polgar, the youngest of the three famed chess playing Polgar Sisters.
All controversially trained and educated at home by their father, Laszlo, he was determined to prove that genius could be created rather than inherited, and that women could be equal to men in chess. The media were besotted by the three Polgar Sisters: Zsuzsa, Sofia and in particularly the youngest (and best), Judit, who has become the world's strongest-ever female player in the game. Together the trailblazing trio brought glamour to a normally dreary chess scene, which badly needed it, as top-level chess had previously been dominated by unsmiling Soviet men and a few eccentric Westerners.
In the early 1990's, after winning the Hungarian national title ahead of the strongest male players, she was selected (somewhat controversially) for the full Hungarian Olympiad team a move that eventually forced FIDE to change the "Men's" event into the "Open" event as a few others followed in her footsteps. Playing in Bled on second board for Hungary behind World Championship challenger Peter Leko, Polgar has been in devastating form.

"I Am Not A Professional"
Xie Jun brought sensational news for Asia and China in 1991 when she won the World Women's title. In the middle, this friendly girl from Beijing had lost the title to Zsuzsa Polgar in 1996 and won it back in 1999 beating Alisa Galliamova for her second term as champion. Strangely, she has never been No.1 ranked in the women's list, a place Judit Polgar is holding securely since 1989. Xie Jun was born on October 30, 1970. She was the first player from outside the Soviet Union to become world women's champion. She is a men's grandmaster by playing strength and has beaten many fancied names. She also helped China to a maiden gold medal triumph at Elista 1998 ending Georgian supremacy. Xie Jun enjoys playing chess. Her achievement in women's chess has been the best by a woman player outside Europe. She placed Asia in the world chess map on October 29, 1991 by defeating Maya Chiburdanidze, the world women's champion from 1978-91 by a 8.5-6.5 margin. She is one of China's famous sporting personalities. Kind and soft spoken Xie is also friendly and is still a student and is a non-professional. When she was due to have her revenge match against Zsuzsa Polgar, the Hungarian became pregnant and a big political storm arose in 1998. Xie manages to defeat Chinese women players easily but some of her colleagues have great promise that an all-Chinese match for the title is not far off.Despite not qualifying for the knock out stage for the World Cup held at Shenyang, Xie Jun kept her promise and spoke to Arvind Aaron in a long chat. Strike a light
by Goran Tomic Life and Chess of Paul Truong
I have read a very interesting text written by Susan Polgar in her article, titled "A Man with a Noble Cause-The Mission: Help Chess, Women and Children".
Susan talked with Paul Truong. He is presented as an extraordinary man and a good chess player. Paul Truong is active in chess politics'. I cite from web site: http://www.uschess.org/news/press/uspr0324.html
"August 11, 2003
During its regular meeting at the 2003 US Open Championship in Los Angeles, California, the USCF Executive Board has unanimously agreed to add two new senior staff members. FM Paul Truong has been named the Director of Marketing and Public Relations". He was a very perspective chess player, but his youth days were very hard. So, I read his interview with great interest. But there are some details in his story which seem very disputable. I cite some of them. Paul Truong said: Paul Truong: "Growing up in Saigon, Vietnam, I became a chess icon at a very young age. I won the first National Junior (under 21) Championship when I was only 5 years old, unexpectedly. All of a sudden, I became a sensation, a child prodigy. I defended this title for the next three years. At the age of 8, I stunned the country by winning my first national championship and defended it successfully for four consecutive years." That was very interesting, and I have never heard that somebody won Junior championship of his country when he was only 5 years old.
