Only two women appear on the About Chess register of Famous Chess Players (see the link box in the upper right corner) : Vera Menchik (Russia/England, 1906-1944) and Judit Polgar (Hungary, b.1976). Both were trailblazers in the chess world. Menchik was the first woman to compete with men in international tournaments at the highest level. Polgar was the first woman able to win tournaments at that level. There are many other women who deserve to be recognized for their outstanding achievements in chess. Our original criteria for entering names on Famous Chess Players were based on rating, which excluded most women. The criteria would have excluded even Vera Menchik if we hadn't added her name by special action.

Woman s World Champion GM Susan (zsuzsa) polgar Delights All at Boston University by Jack Litwinsky, 3/27/97 From chess Horizons, MayJuly, 1997.

Woman's World Champion GM Susan (Zsuzsa) Polgar Delights All at Boston University
by Jack Litwinsky, 3/27/97
From Chess Horizons , May-July, 1997 In a rare Boston appearance (she was in Boston in 1993 and 1985 at the BCC), Grandmaster Susan Polgar gave a free lecture to the students and friends of Boston University. Invited by the Boston University Chess Club to give a talk, GM Polgar chose to present favorite games from each of the Polgar sisters, highlighting differences in their playing styles. Allan Ong, president of the BU Chess Club, introduced the Champion. The talk would not have happened without Allan's hard work and that of other club members and club advisor Assistant Dean Robert Oresick. Many members of the Boston chess community joined the students for this wonderful event. Susan first went over a famous game of her sister Judit which Judit played when she was only 14 years old. The game was played on national television in the then East Germany. We learned from this game that Judit's secret move is a well-timed g4! Well, I think the secret is out, but she still loves to play this move according to Susan. Susan then went over one of her sister Szofia's games. We learned that perhaps Szofia's rating could be higher, but she likes to let her creative nature take over and will play for a beautiful game whenever she can, even passing up more obvious, practical and mundane wins.

FIRST Minister Jack McConnell met the captains of Scotland’s junior chess teams in Aberdeen last Sunday to lend his support to the Glorney and Faber Cup international tournaments taking place in the city in July.
Christopher Macdonald, 15, of Dollar Academy, and Louise Macnab, 16, of Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, chatted with McConnell and Lewis Macdonald, deputy minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, who will open the tournament at Aberdeen University’s Elphinstone Hall on behalf of the First Minister.
Most of Scotland’s top players have gained invaluable experience at Glorney/Faber level before going on to full international honours. In 1992, Scotland won the Faber Cup, assisted greatly by Heather Lang of Stirling scoring a maximum 5/5. Heather is now an established player in the senior Olympiad squad and was in action in the British chess league last weekend.

Reviewed by Jeremy Silman I originally ran into the Polgars in New York 1988 (where I played Judit) and, since that time, I have chatted with the whole family in Mazatlan, seen Zsuzsa in Pardubice (Czech Republic), ran into Sophia in Brazil (sorry, the dates are hazy) and chatted with Judit in Monte Carlo. On each occasion I recall being amazed at how sweet and down to earth these famous young ladies are. No superiority complexes, no raging egos, just good and highly interesting people. Over the years I have heard many stories about their family, and lots of gossip about every aspect of their lives. Some of it I found to be true, other anecdotes were quickly tossed into the rubbish bin. It was often difficult to know what was really going on, so this biography of the Polgar family (concentrating mainly on Zsuzsa) was something I read with considerable interest.

It is very much worthwhile. It is intelligent, thought-provoking, funny, sad, honest, gritty, heroic. The first time I saw it, I wrote to my closest friends and my family, and recommended it to all of them. It is a movie that touches your head and your heart, and stays with you long after you have viewed it. When the final scene is over, you will sit in amazement, and be in awe that it is a TRUE story, about people with vision, courage, and hearts full of love and committment to each other and to the truth. Do whatever you have to to see this movie! Based on a true incident in County Wexford, Ireland, "A Love Divided" tells how one family's problem in dealing with a religious decision swept up first a town, and then a country. Sean and Sheila Cloney (played magnificently by Liam Cunningham and Orla Brady) are Catholic and Protestant, respectively. In order to marry in the Catholic church in Ireland (after having a civil and a Protestant ceremony first), Sheila signs the required Ne Temere pledge that she will raise any children from the marriage as Catholics. She honors this pledge for a long time as her little girls part to go to Mass with their father on Sundays while she goes to services with her father and sister. However, she draws the line when the local parish priest, Father Stafford (Tony Doyle) insists on her oldest daughter going to the Catholic school without any regard for the idea that the parents have the right to make this decision.
