NEWS:
Unfortunately, so much has been happening in my life that I have had hardly any time to update this page, let alone post recent news (shame on me!). For the latest news, I recommend checking my friend JanXena's Chess Goddesses page, and/or joining my Yahoo!Group devoted to the Polgar sisters and other women chess players
I also regret to point out that I do not know Judit Polgar personally or have any contact info for her. Therefore, I am unable to forward any mail (electronic or snail) to her. I apologize to all those who have E-mailed me asking how they can contact her. The only lead I can offer is to E-mail her sister Zsuzsa at: PolgarChessInc@aol.com

Zsuzsa Polgar, Woman's World Chess Champion, gives birth to child
On Saturday, March 6, 1999 at 11:11 AM, Susan Polgar gave birth to a baby boy, 6 pounds 5 ounces, 19 inches long, at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. Both baby and mother are home and doing fine. The name of the baby is Tom.
Zsuzsa Polgar, Woman's World Chess Champion
Questions arise from this. There have been seven woman's world chess champions, plus Vera Menchik was regarded as the champion before the title existed. Several of them never married. Has any of them produced a child, either ever or while world champion? Nona Gaprindashvili reportedly has a son. Was he born while she was world champion? Zsuzsa Polgar is due to defend her world title against challenger Xie Jun of China in June, although a sponsor has not yet been found. Zsuzsa Polgar has requested a postponement of the match, but if it is not postponed, she says that she will nurse her child while the world chess championship match is taking place. Zsuzsa says that making her child into a world chess prodigy like she was is not on her agenda. Zsuzsa has other aspirations for her child.

ZSUZSA POLGAR AND THE KASPAROV - DEEP BLUE CHESS MATCH by Sam Sloan
I am astounded by Bruce Monson's attack on Zsuzsa Polgar. I believe that it requires a response, especially since Zsuzsa will be back on TV today giving analysis and commentary on the Kasparov - Deep Blue Match, even though she is still not being paid. Contrary to what Mr. Monson implies, I do not by any means look lowly upon Michael Valvo, whom I have known for more than 30 years. In the early 1960s, Valvo was an innovative and creative player who made significant contributions to chess opening theory. For example, in the 1963 US Intercollegiate Championship, Valvo won the tournament by playing the Benko Gambit in the last round against Norris Weaver, four years before the Benko Gambit was first invented!! (Valvo did not play 3. ... b5 but rather played b5 on the 4th or 5th move. The game transposed into the Benko Gambit as played today.) Valvo was stronger at five minute chess than at tournament speed. I have written an article about this, which is available at http://www.samsloan.com/fleahous.htm However, Valvo was never in the class of Raymond Weinstein. Weinstein was a 2500 player by the age of 19, when he finished third behind Fischer and Lombardy in the 1960-1961 US Championship. As this was a zonal year, this result qualified Weinstein to play in the World Interzonal tournament. This result also gave Weinstein the automatic International Master title. Weinstein defeated Lombardy, Reshevsky, Bisguier and Robert Byrne in this tournament. Unfortunately, Weinstein became schizophrenic not long thereafter and has been institutionalized since at least 1965.

In 1991, she became the first woman to earn the men's grandmaster (GM) title in the normal way (by achieving three GM "norms" - Nona Gaprindashvili and Maia Chiburdanidze had earlier been made GMs on account of them being women's world champions). Unlike her sister Judit , Zsuzsa has participated in woman's events, and won the Women's World Championship in 1996. Following that, FIDE did a couple of unusual things in the women's chess scene that had a dramatically negative effect on Zsuzsa. 1) She was denied the right to defend her title under FIDE auspices, 2) All active women players were given 100 bonus elo rating points except her (since Zsuzsa has played in many mixed men-women events her playing strength can be considered comparable to a male player of similar elo rating, but most of the other "strong" women players tend to play more exclusively in women's events, thus continuing to carry forward this arbitrary 100 point rating inflation.) Throughout most of her career, Zsuzsa has been either the best or second best woman chess player (behind her sister Judit Polgar .) In more recent events other female players such as Xie Jun have shown similar playing strength.

Judit Polgar
Judit Polgar (born July 23 ) is a Hungarian chess player . Considered the best woman chess player in history, in the January 2004 FIDE rating list (including men and women) she was ranked number eight in the world with an Elo rating of 2728. Judit and her two sisters ( Zsusza (GM) and Sophia (IM)) were reportedly part of a psychological experiment carried out by their father in an effort to determine if women could achieve high mental aptitude when trained from a very early age. The controversial experiment appears to be a success since these woman have achieved heights in chess few men ever achieve. Judit has refused to participate in women-only chess events. Few doubt that any other woman (besides possibly her sister Zsuzsa) could possibly earn a draw, much less a win, against her in any fair game. Amongst her achievements is achieving the men's Grandmaster title at the then record age of 15 years and 4 months, one month earlier than Fischer's record. Her climb up the ranks seemed to put her on target for world champion. But although she has played many winning games against some of the world's best players, she has not won any major tournament. She has also been unable to beat former champion Garry Kasparov in any of their encounters in standard time control games. It appears as though she has plateaued, but she has plenty of time in which to prove herself.

If you're not familiar with the Champions, see the link in the right corner for their full names and the dates of their reigns. The following tables show page statistics gathered from searches on Google (www.google.com). The searches were on the word chess plus the name of the champion. The columns headed '+/-' show the increase (or decrease) in the number of pages from one count to the next.
