Sam's Beauty Contest for FIDE Female Chess Players
Needless to say, no chess event would be complete without a beauty contest. Call me a "male chauvinist pig", but I cannot help but look. Many will object, although I doubt that the contestants will complain very much, but here is my beauty contest for girl chess grandmasters. I must explain that not all are grandmasters. Those rated below 2200 are not grandmasters. These were all contestants in the World Chess Olympiad, which was held in Istanbul from October 28 until November 12, 2000, except for Sopio Tkeshelashvili, and my reason for including her will become obvious. If you have any candidates, and I am sure I have overlooked many, send me a photo by e-mail. Sam Sloan It was not only the women in the tournament who were beautiful. Some of the men were beautiful too. For example, there were Judit Polgar and Antoaneta Stefanova. I must admit they looked like women, but since they were playing in the "Men's World Chess Olympiad", I must be mistaken. (You can never tell these days). The special award for "Best Wife" goes to Grandmaster Peter Leko, whose wife, Sophie, from Armenia, graced the Olympiad.

GM Judit Polgar to visit Botswana!!
While it may be questioned that China's GM Xie Jun is the Queen to the throne of women's chess, GM Judit Polgar has proven to be the strongest woman's player of all time. Since her early teens, GM Polgar has consistently terrorized the male dominion of chess by placing in the world's strongest tournaments. With an 2679 FIDE rating, Judit is among the world's top 25 players and the youngest of the famous chess playing sisters ( GM Zsuzsu and IM Sophia ). The legend of Judit's teddy bear is famous, but now the little girl has grown up and has earned the respect of all in the international chess body.
From August 1-9, she will visit the southern African nation of Botswana to give a number of chess exhibitions and tour the country. Patrick Wanda , Botswana Chess Federation's Secretary General, has planned a knock-out tournament for the privilege to play the Hungarian Grandmaster. The 30-board simuls are only for Botswana players and the BCF plans to make first-rate arrangements and hopes to receive support from the private sector. Mr. Wanda states, "This opportunity is also to be used to raise funds for the development of chess in Botswana. . . particularly, the African team championships which take place later this year."

GM Polgar's visit to Botswana a smash hit!
After announcing that GM Judit Polgar would visit Botswana , it resulted in heightened excitement for future possibilities for African chess. Following is a press a release sent by Executive Director of the Botswana Chess Federation, Patrick Wanda
Dear Colleagues,
We were unable to invite your players to partake in the Polgar Simultaneous due to contractual commitments. I am compelled however, to let you know as others may already know that GM Judit Polgar and her husband Dr. Gustav Font were our esteemed guests from the 2nd of August to the 9th of August 2001.
She conducted two simultaneous chess exhibitions on thirty boards for day one and day two.
The results were as follows:
Day one: Botswana 1.5 - Polgar 28.5
Day two: Botswana - Polgar 30
Qualification criteria for playing GM Polgar was as follows: The top three players from all our National Events of 2001 in all categories, thus IBM Individual National Championships Ladies and Men, Stanbic National Club Championships, Debswana National School Championships (Junior Boys, Girls and Senior Boys, Girls and Primary Boys and Girls) and the Roscoe Bonna Blitz Championships. The above was the composition for the first thirty on day one. Meanwhile an open section of 150 players was conducted in the background on day one to select the top thirty for a place to play GM Polgar on day two. The winner on day one was Ignatious Njobvu (2164) and the draw from Baone Kealeboga (unrated).

When the Radjabov-Polgar game ended in a quick draw, Anand offered the draw in the French game against Bareev, who accepted the offer after some consideration. KO Kountdown
We know that FIDE, the World Chess Federation, is planning its world championship knockout tournament in December, though we don't yet know exactly where or when that will no doubt be confirmed at the FIDE Congress being held shortly in Greece. Who's playing? For that information in an easily accessible format, see the page set up by ICC's Zek here
Polgar on Polgar
One interested kibitzer on ICC to today's Judit Polgar vs Etienne Lautier game was sister Susan Polgar, herself once Women's World Champion and a formidable player today, who suggested, when the game really did seem to have settled down into clear and easy equality, that it was very likely to end up a draw unless "someone goes crazy". The amazing Judit once again pushed into complications and won handily.

Anand to defend title against Polgar By Arvind Aaron Mainz Aug. 13. Former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand will defend his title in the Chess Classic match against World No.1 ranked woman Judit Polgar of Hungary in an eight-game match starting here at the Rheinegold Hall on Thursday. In a brief opening ceremony on Wednesday evening, Judit Polgar picked up a white king from a box to confirm that she will play white in the opening game. It is a rapid chess match and the players will have 25 minutes each on the clock. Due to his electric playing speed, Anand should be a natural favourite for this contest. Asked if playing Polgar put pressure on him, Anand replied in the negative saying, "the man versus woman, man versus machine matches have all been explored and tried out. I see it as a match between two strong players." Anand and Judit Polgar last played at Wijk aan Zee and their game ended in a draw. Anand has a huge personal head-to-head lead of plus 14 from their 30 games. At Wijk aan Zee this year, Anand won the title while Polgar finished second and recorded her career best rating performance.

    Kasparov, Garry (2838) - Polgar, Judit (2677)
Eurotel Trophy, Prague (2), 28.04.2002 [Ziatdinov, Rashid]
    I like this line too
Make your guesses! I will give you six guesses for Judit's next move. I or Garry (I am sure) would never find the move.
    [Alternatives: 6...f5; 6...g6; 6...Nf6; 6...Ne7; 6...Be6; or 6...Ba6.]
There is a rule in chess - "Any attack on the wing must be met with action in the center." But this may cost you a pawn! Be prepared.
There is a rule in the Russian School of Chess - "A Russian never goes back." Educated Russian chess players always follow this rule. Here white will let go of a pawn and it is better to have a Knight on the second rank than on the first.
One strange move requires another strange move.
My computer (Fritz6), after two minutes work, assessed that black is better by a quarter of a pawn (0.25).
The primary opening rule of chess - "Get out your pieces" and the next move is easy to predict.
My computer is still optimistic about black's position (0.12 pawn for black) and suggests 13.Bf4 for white and Garry knew it (Garry is one of the best in computer chess). Garry knew that a nice young chess Lady may have looked over this position at home with her computer, and he tried to find a move that Judit's computer may have underestimated, and he found it. (Garry's next move is only number 17 in my computer's list of candidate moves!)
