FIRST Minister Jack McConnell met the captains of Scotland’s junior chess teams in Aberdeen last Sunday to lend his support to the Glorney and Faber Cup international tournaments taking place in the city in July.
Christopher Macdonald, 15, of Dollar Academy, and Louise Macnab, 16, of Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, chatted with McConnell and Lewis Macdonald, deputy minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, who will open the tournament at Aberdeen University’s Elphinstone Hall on behalf of the First Minister.
Most of Scotland’s top players have gained invaluable experience at Glorney/Faber level before going on to full international honours. In 1992, Scotland won the Faber Cup, assisted greatly by Heather Lang of Stirling scoring a maximum 5/5. Heather is now an established player in the senior Olympiad squad and was in action in the British chess league last weekend.

Summary
The chess world acknowledges that Judit Polgar is unique. She is a woman who competes on equal terms with the world’s best chess men, defeating even the world number one Garry Kasparov. In this book, Tibor Károlyi analyses in depth a large selection of Judit’s exciting games taken from all stages of her career and filled to the brim with neat tactics and attacks on the king. She is the product of a family driven by chess and from an early age was groomed for success. The book covers Judit’s early childhood when her father and two sisters all contributed greatly to the development of her chess skills. Having trained with both of Judit’s sisters, Zsuzsa and Sofia, the author experienced first-hand the parents’ innovative methods of education and their creation of a world-class chess grandmaster.
About the Author
Tibor Károlyi is an International Master, former Hungarian Champion and Grandmaster chess trainer. He is also a chess writer who regularly contributes to a number of British and European magazines. He lives in Hungary.

Judit Polgar
Judit Polgar (born July 23 ) is a Hungarian chess player . Considered the best woman chess player in history, in the January 2004 FIDE rating list (including men and women) she was ranked number eight in the world with an Elo rating of 2728. Judit and her two sisters ( Zsusza (GM) and Sophia (IM)) were reportedly part of a psychological experiment carried out by their father in an effort to determine if women could achieve high mental aptitude when trained from a very early age. The controversial experiment appears to be a success since these woman have achieved heights in chess few men ever achieve. Judit has refused to participate in women-only chess events. Few doubt that any other woman (besides possibly her sister Zsuzsa) could possibly earn a draw, much less a win, against her in any fair game. Amongst her achievements is achieving the men's Grandmaster title at the then record age of 15 years and 4 months, one month earlier than Fischer's record. Her climb up the ranks seemed to put her on target for world champion. But although she has played many winning games against some of the world's best players, she has not won any major tournament. She has also been unable to beat former champion Garry Kasparov in any of their encounters in standard time control games. It appears as though she has plateaued, but she has plenty of time in which to prove herself.

Essent Chess Tournament 2003
In November 2001, while working on an article about the World Champions, your humble Guide first tackled this question. If you're not familiar with the Champions, see the link in the right corner for their full names and the dates of their reigns. The following tables show page statistics gathered from searches on Google (www.google.com). The searches were on the word chess plus the name of the champion. Anyone familiar with Google (and who isn't these days?) knows that these counts are approximate, but consistent across searches. The column on the right shows page counts taken in November 2001, while two other columns show more recent counts for the same search. The columns headed '+/-' show the increase (or decrease) in the number of pages from one count to the next.

Welcome
This month the featured game is from the 1995 Donner Memorial. The players, 19 year old Judit Polgar and the creative and innovative Alexei Polgar, both played to win as a draw was never considered. Shirov plays a little too unsound and Polgar takes full advantage, forcing him to forego castling and struggle to hold the position. However, it is not to be for Shirov as he goes down in flames.
Joe's Chess Page also offers a large and useful selection of links to some of the most essential chess sites on the Internet. In addition, the Photo Gallery contains many pictures of some of the most interesting and influential players in history.
A recent addition to the Chess page is a library of some of the greatest games of all time. They are in .pgn format and can be downloaded at your convenience. PGN files can be opened in any text editor or may be opened in the ChessBase, ClubMate or KenChess database/pgn readers and graphically replayed Note: These files are zipped (compressed).
