87 national federations sent delegations to the 1998 Championships. Not surprisingly, the major chess powers dominated the event. Another factor came into play this year, as the event was open to multiple players from the same federation in each age category. The United States Chess Federation refused to allow the extra players, and were at a huge disadvantage, with a mere 12 players compared to over 50 from several countries. The USCF decision to reduce the number of coaches from three to two also hurt the team. England had a very small delegation, but more than made up for that by sweeping the gold medals in the Under-18 group. A final total of 376 players divided in 7 sections showed up to amidst an atmosphere that resembled a chess festival. On Thursday, Ken Walker, and George Fischer scored wins and Craig Christian drew among Nevadans that played John Donaldson in a clock simul. Jonathon Reyes scored one of the 3 victories against Andrew Soltis. Frank Gray won the second section of the WBCA Blitz with a 10-1 score after a tiebreak game. Edwin Straver and Arkia Bayata had respectable scores in Section One. In the Open section, David Vigorito defeated Alexander Ivanov. David said he had played him over 20 times and this was his first victory against him in a Najdorf Sicilian. Just before round two, John Trivett was honored for coming to Reno to play and Jerry was presented with his State Championship trophy. In Round 3, Enrico Sevilano drew GM Alex Wojkiewicz. Frank Gray, in the A section was up three pawns, on the rook file and drew his opponent. In Round four, John Currell's brilliant pawn push to f6 won what I thought was a nice game. In round six, GM Igor Novikov drew very quickly to win the Open tournament outright. GM Hikura Nakamura tried to squeeze victory from Ricardo Guzman to tie but finally was held to a draw. Nevadans Ryan Van Reken won the "C" section outright and Tim Connolly won the "D" section outright. Anyone with at least 4½ points won some prize money if you check the point results below.

58. Nakamura Continues To Rise… Qualifies For WCC

Nakamura Continues to Rise… Qualifies for WCC
GM Hikaru Nakamura is the brightest American star since the great Bobby Fischer . Having broke Fischer's record for achieving the GM title, the 15-year old is continuing his ascent as a top player. His hunger and determination was shown once more at the Pan-American Continental Championships (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Especially impressive were his wins over GMs Gennadi Sagalchik (USA) and Julio Granda-Zuniga (Peru).
GM Alexander Goldin (USA) and GM Giovanni Vescovi (Brazil) shared joint 1st with 8½-2½ while Nakamura placed joint 2nd with five players: GM Ivan Morovic (Chile), GM Alexander Onischuk (USA), IM Pascal Carbonneau (Canada), GM Lázaro Bruzón (Cuba) and GM Yuri Shulman (USA). All scored 8-3 and will qualify to compete in the World Championship Cycle.
GM Hikaru Nakamura
Nakamura scored impressive wins against Uruguay's IM Bernardo Roselli and Granda-Zuniga which featured a very mature king march from an apparently safe kingside (see moves 31-40). His understanding of piece play was very instructive in this game as he shifted his heavy artillery from one file to another preparing a pending invasion. The results were indeed very effective. Perhaps Nakamura's most impressive game demonstrated his keen understanding of positional nuances and most of all, his tactical alertness. His 23…Rxg3! against Sagalchik started a fusillade of tactics ending in the cute 37…Qxa3+!
After (diagram), the game continued 24.Nxg3 Bxf4+ 25.Kb1 Bxg3.

Eight-way Tie for 1st!!
In the penultimate eighth round, there was some serious bloodletting as 21 of the 29 games were decisive. This sets up an exciting finalé for the national crown as eight players are currently tied for 1st and numerous norms are at stake. Of course, there will have to be a tie-breaker as there are also another seven players tied for second only one-half point out of the lead. FM Stephen Muhammad is a point out of the lead along with 12 others and still has a chance at the GM norm if he scores against IM Boris Kreiman in the last round.
On Board 1, GM Joel Benjamin upended GM Alexander Shabalov in a very exciting Ruy Lopez when after sacrificing the exchange, Shabalov overextended his attack and later erred with 48…d5? Benjamin simply snapped off the pawn willing to meet 49…Qxd5 with 50.Rxe5! The ensuing endgame was a technical win for Benjamin and he moved into the leader's circle.
IM Hikaru Nakamura had a tough pairing playing the black pieces against GM Boris Gulko , the only player to have won both the Soviet and the U.S. Championships. Nakamura attempted to rattle the steady veteran with a speculative line in the English, but after 8…0-0, he was hit with (diagram)
A mere few moves later, black's position was under heavy pressure as the queen had to run for her life after 16.Nd5 Qa5+ 17.b4! Qa3. However, Gulko's next move of 18.Bxb8 (if 18…Rxb8 19.Ne7+ and 20.Qxd8) immediately won a piece. Nakamura made a futile attempt to liquidate into a drawing position and ultimately decided to conserve his energy in an attempt to earn his GM norm in the last round. He will be favored against
