Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik
GM Vladimir Kramnik learned chess in the small seaside Russian town of Tuapse. His father, an artist, taught him. Kramnik took to it immediately and by age 7 was a first category player. By age 10, he defeated his first grandmaster. As a tournament player he was usually the youngest competitor. Upon reviewing some of Vladimir’s games, Mikhail Botvinnik quickly admitted him to his prestigious school, where Garry Kasparov also taught. At 24, Kramnik assumed the title of World Champion by defeating Kasparov in the Braingames match in London. What's New Join/Renew Shop News ... Governance

Kramnik says he is unnerved by the computer's power
World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik is taking on the world's most powerful chess computer in a competition that has been billed by its organisers as a "last chance for human intelligence". The Russian chess master will battle Deep Fritz in an eight-day battle of eight games in Bahrain in October.
Kasparov: Kramnik beat his former teacher last year
Speaking at a London press conference on Tuesday to announce the contest, Kramnik admitted he was "quite scared to hear the computer can see 4 milllion moves a second. I'll be happy to do one a second". The competition, which will be broadcast on the internet, is seen as the sequel to supercomputer Deep Blue's defeat of ex-world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 in New York. Human instinct Kramnik, 25, is Kasparov's former pupil, beating his teacher last year to take the world title.

Kramnik takes $800,000 from the match
Man and machine have taken equal honours in the eight-match Brains in Bahrain chess duel. World champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia tied 4-4 with the chess computer Deep Fritz. Kramnik won $800,000 for his part in the tournament, awarded by Bahrain's King Hamad. For his opponent, publicity for the computer manufacturer Chessbase is the most obvious benefit. Kramnik: "Totally exhausted"
Had Kramnik won, his prize money would have been $1m. But at least he exceeded the performance of his predecessor as world champion, Garry Kasparov, who in 1997 was defeated by supercomputer Deep Blue in New York. Fatigue takes over Kramnik told reporters after the match: "I'm not especially satisfied with the result even though I had more chances to win than the computer." Deep Fritz, with Black, opened with what the chess champion called a "clever choice" - a Queen's Gambit.

Interview with Vladimir Kramnik before the LPR "battle of the world champions" in Chess Classic Mainz
Metz: Vladimir Kramnik, in an open letter in conjunction with Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov you voiced your 'concern' about world association FIDE's handling of time limits, the history of chess world championships and treatment of chess organisers who should apparently all be kept under the thumb of the world association. The letter was a surprise for some people, in particular, as you joined in common cause with your arch-rivals Karpov and Kasparov. Were your concerns pushed into the background by this rivalry question? Vladimir Kramnik: At first the letter looks as if Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik are joining together against FIDE. But this is complete nonsense. This was neither a collaboration of us three as trio, nor was it a plot against FIDE. Myself, Karpov and Kasparov have different views on different issues, but we share nearly identical views on the matters that were raised in our letter. This is why we all signed it, and I'm confident that other grandmasters will also put their signatures to it. From my point of view it is not a question about FIDE but only about its policies. I insist on dialogue if such important questions as time control and so on are on the agenda. It is just not possible for matters like this to be decided over players' heads. We are not making specific demands, on the contrary we only wanted to set the wheels turning for discussions.

CHESS/DORTMUND QUALIFIER
Leko is Kramnik's challenger
ARVIND AARON PETER LEKO, the youngest of eight players, won the Dortmund qualifier and advanced to become the challenger for Vladimir Kramnik's Einstein Group world chess title after he recovered from an indifferent start. The triumph in the Candidates tournament has lifted Leko's spirits. His defensive play never made him a big threat to win the FIDE world championship which followed a knock-out pattern. By qualifying from this tournament, Leko, the 23-year-old (born Sept. 8, 1979) Hungarian is closer to fulfilling his ambition. Leko's hometown is Szeged in Hungary but his sponsors, WFG, a gas company, and in-laws live in Dortmund. The youngster, who downed Bobby Fischer and Judit Polgar's world record of becoming the youngest Grandmaster in January 1994 at Wijk aan Zee, has moved from rung to rung in the last two years and now has his eyes firmly set on the world title. Leko's German is perfect and he is even giving press conferences in that language. He is the most liked player in Dortmund although most Germans believe Kramnik to be the best player. ARVIND AARON
The victor and the vanquished. Peter Leko defeated Veselin Topalov (below) 2.5-1.5 to clinch the title.

CHESS/FIDE GRAND PRIX
Kasparov asserts supremacy
ARVIND AARON WINNING a match each day, World No. 1 ranked Garry Kasparov asserted his supremacy with ease to take the honours in the second FIDE Grand Prix rapid chess tournament in Moscow. Kasparov celebrated his return to the FIDE fold with this undefeated title triumph. ARVIND AARON
Kasparov exhibited better preparation and a greater will power to win the tournament. It was easy to predict the first place for Kasparov for the opposition did not consist of Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. His main rivals, world champion Ruslan Ponomariov and Vassily Ivanchuk, both from Ukraine, failed to live upto their expectations. Playing in Moscow for the first time in six months, Kasparov scored with effortless ease against Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia and Joel Lautier of France in the first two rounds, with 2-0 sweeps. Thereafter the margins were narrower but yet comfortable. The find of the New Delhi world championship in 2000, Alexander Grischuk of Russia, lost 0.5-1.5 to Kasparov in the quarter-finals. If Kasparov had to sweat it out it was in the match against former world champion Alexander Khalifman, the Russian from St. Petersburg. Winning in the tie-break 2.5-1.5, Kasparov moved to the finals. Teimour Radjabov, the 15-year-old talent from Azerbaijan, who came through a tough pool of big names could not make his magic work against Kasparov. He got crushed in the black game and could not get anything better than a draw with the white. Kasparov had the finals in his grasp and won by 1.5-0.5.
