In the 11th and final round, in Monte Carlo on Thursday, he beat Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria 1.5-0.5 to swell his points tally to 14.5 from 22 games and emerge triumphant. The former World champion, who did not play in the last year's traditional blindfold and rapid tournament, lost only one game, in blindfold against Morozevich, the winner of the 2002 edition. The blindfold tournament was won by Vladimir Kramnik, while Evgeny Bareev took first place in the rapid competition. The triumph was Anand's third in the unique tournament, which has one blindfold and one rapid game in each round. The Indian ace had earlier stamped his superiority in the event in 1997, when he won all the three titles at stake Rapid, Blindfold and Combined, and in 1994. Anand finished a full point ahead of nearest rivals Peter Leko of Hungary and 2001 champion Alexander Morozevich of Russia. Though Anand did not finish first in the individual rapid and blindfold categories, his steady performance in both was enough to net him the champion's crown.

PLAYER ChessPress My open letter to Vladimir Kramnik Dear Mr. Kramnik, I am writing to you, the World Chess Champion, in the hope that this letter will not take up much of your time and, possibly, it will make you ponder over some of the issues that are worrying me and, and I am sure, many chess fans. In the course of 50 years, or to be more exact, since 1951 when I came to know chess moves, I have been following World Chess Championship matches. In other words, I was hooked up for chess at the time of the Botvinnik-Bronstein match. And last year I was on-line all the time waiting for the chess news from London. I would like to congratulate you whole-heartedly on your victory over Garri Kasparov, which brought you the World Title. It was really a grandiose victory since you defeated the chess player whose name has become the symbol of chess. The chess player who seemed invincible has been unseated by you from the chess throne! Your victory today appears as another labour of Hercules. I presume some time later in future it will be regarded as a triumph of David over Goliath. Your victory is well deserved. However, it has been largely underestimated - and this is not only my opinion - by chess contemporaries. What is more, everything is being done to belittle your success, your creative achievement. Very often we hear today: Kramnik...World Champion!? Who is Kramnik? The World Champion today is Anand, - this is what we hear from those who recognise only the FIDE Championship. They say that Kasparov in the match was definitely off form, that your victory was just a matter of chance etc.

Vladimir Kramnik became the sole winner of the 21st Ciudad de Linares by winning two games and drawing the remaining ten, the majority of which barely lasted twenty moves. The winner is always the deserved winner, to quote a Kramnik dictum, but this time the winner too admitted that this plethora of short draws had left him with an unpleasant feeling.
The prize for the most combative player was rightly awarded to Garry Kasparov who deserved praise for his unremitting fighting spirit. And there was more gripping chess as you will see in our spectacular games selection. CHESS AND THE MOVIES

He ended the 15-year domination of Garry Kasparov by winning games 2 and 10.When the draw was agreed in game 15 Kramnik punched the air with both fists, the first emotion seen during an amazing month for the young champion.Kramnik fulfilled Kasparov s own prophecy that he would replace him at the top someday. Kasparov was very involved in Kramnik s early tutelage and career and said after game 15 finished that the quality of Kramnik s preparation could be considered proof of the effectiveness of the Botvinnik school of chess instruction, from which they both graduated. Press conference notes: Both players were very relaxed during the press conference. Kasparov: "I m just waiting for Braingames to tell me how I can play another match with Vladimir.""I felt I had no openings with White or Black. Kramnik made some bold choices and my opening preparation was busted. If you think I didn t prepare for this match, wait until the tournaments, till Wijk aan Zee.""I wasn

Goodnesshave I only been here two weeks? The makeover on the site continues, as I'm sure you've noticed. We have another 4 to 6 weeks to go to our target, and things are on schedule; we'll definitely have our new version in place in time for August's major events, the US Open and the 1997 Interplay US Championship. The artists will start next week, for those of you who've wondered about the temporary fonts and graphics now in place. This week brought us a new challenge: covering the 1997 Interplay US Junior Championship when we run a weekly update schedule. My very special thanks to Garrett Scott, Eric Johnson, Glen Peterson, and of course Elliott Winslow for their help in getting us as much information as possible right up to (OK, and past!) our weekly deadlines for the Website. Special thanks also to Eric Schiller for some of the background material on the US Junior. We hope you enjoy the coverage.
