The match was held in London from October 8 to November 2, 2000, with Kramnik winning 2 games, drawing 13, and losing none. ImgBorder('/i/encyclo/k/kramnik.jpg',220,242,1); Kramnik's father was an artist and his mother a music teacher. Although no one in his home played serious chess, Kramnik learned to play when he was four years old from his father. Kramnik was fascinated by the game and began taking instruction at the local Pioneers (a Soviet youth organisation) at the age of five, becoming champion of Tuapse at seven. At the age of 11 he left the ranks of first category players and became a "candidate" master. More important, he came to the attention of the famous Soviet Chess School and its headmaster, former world champion Mikhail Botvinnik . Only the most talented pupils in the Soviet Union were invited to study chess there, and Kramnik made rapid progress.

Vladimir Kramnik
Vladimir Kramnik (born June 25 ) is a Russian chess player. In , he beat Garry Kasparov in a 16 game match played in London . In the eyes of the participants and many observers, this was a match for the world championship, and made Kramnik the chess world champion, although the International Chess Federation (FIDE) did not recognise the match as such. Kramnik was born in the town of Tuapse, on the shores of the Black Sea . As a child, he studied in the chess school established by Mikhail Botvinnik . His first notable result in a major tournament was his gold medal win as first reserve for the Russian team in the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila . His selection for the team caused some controversy in Russia at the time, as he was only sixteen years old and had not yet been awarded the grandmaster title, but his selection was supported by Garry Kasparov. He went on to win eight games, draw one, and lose none. The following year, Kramnik played in the very strong tournament in Linares. He finished fifth, beating the then world number three, Vasily Ivanchuk along the way. He followed this up with a string of good results, but had to wait until 1995 for his first major tournament win at normal time controls, when he won the strong Dortmund tournament, finishing it unbeaten.

situation in FIDE

The quotes from the interview, given for
Vladimir KRAMNIK: (...) The FIDE has taken an obligation in Prague to establish a professional structure in charge of holding world championships. However, nothing has been done: the FIDE is not going to part even with a tiniest fraction of its power. Neither of the obligations that the FIDE pledged to in Prague was fulfilled though more than half a year has elapsed.
(...) I witnessed the methods used by the FIDE in Wijk aan Zee and just wondered. The FIDE must alter something in its structure, replace people and change the mentality. A straightforward pressure was applied on Ponomariov which is absolutely unwarrantable! I am not in the know of all particulars but most probably I would have behaved myself in a similar way being in Ponomariov's shoes. When one sees that all terms are dictated by your adversary in the world championship match and that all organising structure also takes his side, everybody would hate it. I believe this to be the main reason why the problems with the match originated.

A Life in the Day of Vladimir Kramnik Eva Vermandel Vladimir kramnik, 26, is the world chess champion. Next year he travels to Bahrain to play Deep Fritz, the world's most Vadvanced chess program, for a prize of £1m. He lives alone in Moscow. Interview by Richard Johnson. Portrait by Eva Vermandel. It's quite difficult for me to get up in the morning. I like to lie in my bed for 10 minutes and think of nothing - it's my favourite 10 minutes of the day. While I lie there, I gently exercise from top to bottom. Head, neck, fingers - I have exercises for all the body's muscle groups. I don't get out of bed much before noon. Maybe I'll have a sandwich or a yogurt, but lunch is at 3pm, so there's no point having breakfast. Just a cup of coffee. It's two hours before I feel completely fresh. My apartment is five years old. It's in a good district, just south of Moscow, but it's small. I have one room where I sit at my computer, and one where I sleep. There is a balcony, but it doesn't overlook anything romantic. There are no pictures of me about the place, and the rooms are half empty. There's a bed, a table and two chessboards I keep for training purposes. They aren't expensive gold sets that cost £100,000; they cost £100, and were both birthday presents from my brother.
