When the great Bobby Fischer was asked if women could play chess he said "I could give any woman in the world a piece and a move; to Gaprindashvili even, a knight" When Mikhail Tal heard about Fischer’s claim he is reported to have laughed and said "Fischer is Fischer, but a knight is a knight!"

First prize of the new ChessBase MegaBase 2004 DVD was won by J.Franklin Campbell of Mason,Michigan, USA who submitted the only all-correct entry we received. We said we would award the second prize if we received a 90% correct solution by the closing date, January 31 2004. That means 54/60. Just before the deadline, second prize has been won by Phaedrus Parker, Juneau, Alaska, USA, who had 58 questions right (allowing for some differences in spelling). He wins a copy of 'Gladiatoren ante Portas', the book of the Hans-Werner von Massow Memorial tournament. Here are the questions and solutions.

The Time Traveller
Gerald Abrahams and the blindfold exhibition "ABRAHAMS, Gerald (b. 15 April 1907) British amateur who in the 1930s was playing master-chess. At that period he was the most attacking player in England." (from The Encyclopedia of Chess, edited by Harry Golombek, Batsford 1977) In the summer of 1933 Gerald Abrahams had finished in third place in the British Championship, behind the famous player from the Indian sub-continent Mir Sultan Khan and Tylor, but ahead of Alexander, Sir George Thomas, Golombek and Winter. He then spent the 1933-34 academic year (or certainly part of it) in Belfast as a lecturer in law at Queen's University, Belfast. He does not seem to have engaged in much competition play while in Belfast, his only really serious game being a victory over J. J. O'Hanlon on Board 1 for Belfast in the annual challenge match against Dublin on the 24th February 1934. He did however play in a friendly match on the 21st April 1934 between Queen's University and C.I.Y.M.S, winning his own game against W. Minnis. The same evening he also gave a simultaneous exhibition, taking on 12 of the Queen's University and C.I.Y.M.S. players and beating them all. A further exhibition was promised, and on the 21st May 1934, Abrahams this time gave an exhibition of blindfold play at the Belgravia Hotel, Ulsterville Avenue, Belfast. He faced four players - P. J. McMahon, W. Minnis, A. L. Davies and S. Coulson. They were certainly a strong quartet. McMahon had finished equal first in the 1926 Irish Championship, before losing out in the play-off and had won the Williamson Shield (and with it the title of Champion of Belfast) for four successive years from 1926-29. In 1935 he won the Ulster Championship. Davies had finished third in the 1933 Ulster Championship, and subsequently was second equal in 1935 and third again in 1936, before finally gaining the title in 1944. Minnis played for Ireland in the 1939 International Team Tournament (Olympiad) in Buenos Aires and was Ulster champion in 1945. Coulson was the weakest of the quartet, but was probably at the time in the top dozen best Belfast players.

For those books that are still in print I have added links to the info-pages at the internet-bookshops Amazon.com or its german branch Amazon.de . Following those links you can find information about availability, prices and in many cases also interesting reviews of people who have read that book. Some of these collections are annofritzed (as in the case of Bobby Fischers "My 60 memorable Games"), in other cases (like in the case of the Euwe/Kramer book "The Middle-Game" (dt. "Das Mittelspiel") most of the games are not annofritzed. Usually the games/positions are sorted in the same way as they appear in the books. Sorry, some collections are incomplete!

English Midland's successes were: Mark Hebden (Leicester) 6 /11; Maxim Devereux (Hereford) with 5 /11; Li Wu (Nuneaton) and Nick Thomas (Warwickshire) both with 5/11. Muslims in Indian Sport By K. Datta
It would be difficult to imagine the Indian sports scene without the Muslims in it, so enriching has been their contribution. It is 45 years since the subcontinent was divided, but old sports buffs refuse to accept that, or any other point of time in history, as a cut-off point. The Muslims always were part and parcel of Indian sport and continue to be so.
There is hardly a game in which they have not played a prominent part. Hockey or cricket, soccer or wrestling, athletics or racket games, Muslim participation has added flair and distinction.
No better wrestler has lived in the subcontinent than the late legendary Gama. In the 1970s Meher Din was a popular champion famous for his war cry of Ya Mere Maula, when he stepped into the akhara. What a specimen of manhood! In the track and field world Ilyas Babar Has made a name for himself as a coach after his days as an outstanding university athlete in Hyderabad. The great Sriram Singh, Olympic 800 meters finalist, is the best known of the self-effacing Babar Sahib’s many pupils. Even the more ‘exclusive’ sports like equestrianism and golf have been enriched by Muslim participation. Major G. M. Khan of the Indian army made a splendid figure on horseback as he expertly rode his way to a gold medal in the 1982 Asian Games at New Delhi. Ali Sher, a humble caddy, won the coveted Indian Open Tournament in 1991.

Associations News 2002 Rousing reception accorded to British Champion Ramesh Aug 13 Landing in home town is always a pleasure, more so when you win a big International event, make history with a cloud nine performance. But for the unassuming Madras chess master Ramesh, who conquered all that came his way at the Smith and Williamson British Championship at Torquay, England last week, it was the result of hard work and taking it game by game. "I just played my natural game and wasn't counting on the results in the second half" said a contented Ramesh, who gains a twelve game Grandmaster Norm, for his fortnight's work at England. Receiving the Champion at the Anna International Airport, Madras with pride and delight was his mother, who fed him with delicious sweets, completing the occasion. Present on the occasion were scores of chess enthusiasts waving the Indian flag, officials from Tamil Nadu Chess Association including, Mr K Murali Mohan, Mr Thirukalathi, Mr V Hariharan, Mr Ramaswamy and scribes and camera crew from Television networks. Other top chess players present on the occasion were International Master Tejas Bakre (enroute to his tournament in Abu Dhabi) and Ramesh's colleague and friend FIDE Master T S Ravi. Talking about his all conquering home-run victories over four Grandmasters, Ramesh said, "I took my chances and just played it as one game after the other. The win with Barua was pleasing and the final game victory over McShane in a tight contest, gave me the Championship." Adding this Norm to the one he got at Biel Open, Switzerland last year, Ramesh is just on the right track to complete the Grandmaster title requirements. "My immediate target is to become a Grandmaster" said the young Indian Oil Corporation Officer. On becoming a part of history, being the second Indian after Mir Sultan Khan, who won the event thrice 70 years back, to win the prestigious British Open, Ramesh said," I am very happy to emulate a great player and be a part of history."

Gioachino Greco (1600-1634) Play as Gioachino Greco (not complicated puzzles) (chess tactics training) The greatest and strongest chess player of XVII century. The author of a very famous book (150 games with variants), where he showed the important role of quick development, combinational play. Some of these games has interest nowadays to teach beginners. Greco is the first genius of the romantic chess school. Philipp Stamma (18th century) Solve studies of Stamma (not very complicated puzzles) The biggest author of studies of 18th century. His studies are rather combinational ones. He also adapted some ideas from shatrandge to the modern chess. Francois Philidor (1726-1795) The greatest and strongest (without any doubts) chess player of XVIII century, the first big "positional" player in history; the famous (musical) composer in his time. The author of the book "Analyses of the Chess Game" which had a revolutionary meaning. "The pawns are the soul of the chess game" (Philidor). He considered that the pieces only help them, their role is big in the endspiel - not in the opening. He was very successful in the endgame, some his analyses are very accurate and useful here. In 1747 he outplayed Philipp Stamma, his strongest opponent, with result +8, -1, =1.
