MIR SULTAN KHAN He was a mysterious figure who seemed to come from nowhere, much like a samurai in a Kurosawa film or a gunslinger in a Leone western. Arriving in England in 1929, he took British chess by storm, winning the British championship three times before vanishing again just four years after his arrival. His name was Mir Sultan Khan and there has never been another player quite like him in the annals of chess. Illiterate, unfamiliar with Western chess until just a few years before his professional debut, he had a natural aptitude for the game to rival that of the legendary Capablanca. Sultan was born in a small village in India (in an area that is now part of Pakistan) in 1905. He learned one of the Indian forms of chess (possibly chaturanga) from his father at the age of nine. By adulthood he was recognized as a master of that form of chess. When Sultan was 21, a noted chess patron named Sir Umar Hayat Khan brought Sultan into his household, supposedly to be employed as a servant, but the real goal was to educate Sultan in the Western form of chess. Numerous Indian masters of the game were hired to instruct him and, after two years, Sultan was ready to make his debut. Sultan entered the All-India Championship in 1928 and succeeded beyond his patron's wildest expectations. Of the nine games he played, he drew just a single game and won the rest, finishing first by a margin of 2.5 points.

Schaakboekje 41 in juni 1998
Schaakverhalen: Mir Sultan Khan.

Following our recent list of American Chess Champions (see the link box in the upper right corner), we continue with the British and Canadian champions (see the link box again). The link box entries under 'Elsewhere on the Web' list champions in other categories : women, juniors, seniors, and regional. The British title has been won by 46 different players, the Canadian title by 41. A careful comparison of both lists reveals that Abe Yanofsky managed to win both championships : the British title in 1953 and the Canadian title eight times between 1941 and 1965. The British championship has long been open to any Commonwealth player. The year 2003 may well have marked the last occurrence of this cultural generosity. After Indian players captured the title in 2002 and 2003, the British Chess Federation established new eligibility requirements. In the future the tournament will be restricted to British citizens or residents.

30. Chess History
between the players of the modern form of chess and a player of the old Indian version occured between 1929 and 1933 when mir sultan khan became British
http://www.chess-poster.com/english/history.htm
Early Chess The true origin of the game of Chess is not clear. Some Legends attribute its invention to the Biblical King Solomon, or to the Greek god Hermes, or to the Chinese mandarin Hansing. But most probably originated in India sometime around the 6th or 7th century AD. From there the game crossed into Persia (now Iran), then to Europe. The word Chess is thought to be derived from "shah," the Persian word for king, and the word checkmate from shah mat, meaning "the king is dead."
The earliest written mention of a Chesslike game appeared around 600 AD, and the fact that it was mentioned without an explanation suggests that it was already well known by that time. Chess is one of a group of games related from Chaturanga, a game believed to have originated in India in the 6th century or perhaps earlier, which itself may be related to a much older Chinese game. Chaturanga is a Sanskrit word referring to the four arms (or divisions) of an Indian army: elephants, cavalry, chariots, and infantry, from which come the four types of pieces in that game. It was not only two quoted texts that strengthened the belief for China as the birthplace of Chess, but also the circular bronze and ivory counters for the astrological Hsiang Hsi and for the war game Hsiang Chhi found during excavations. Similar finds are totally lacking in India. Indeed, India is a Chess Sahara Desert for archaeological finds, written documents, literature, early references, legends or anything akin.

Chess Star of India No, I am not talking about Viswanathan Anand who is undoubtedly the strongest chess player India has ever produced. I am looking far back. The British championship at Ramsgate , 1929, saw an unknown Indian winning the tournament in grand style. Mir Malik Sultan Khan (1905-1966), the new champion, appeared on the international chess scene with a bang. He won the British championship thrice and represented England in two chess olympiads on the top board. Sultan Khan was a caretaker in the royal palace of Sir Umer Hayat Khan , a feudal lord of Punjab. Umer Hayat noticed that the young man was an unusually gifted player and decided to take him to England. Sultan Khan had to learn the international rules of the game but took very little time to adjust himself to the changed circumstances. But his career was short lived. He had to return to India with his master in 1933, when he was still the reigning British champion , and did not get any more chance to play chess at the top level.

Chess Menchik Club That said, there were far more tragic casualties. Vera Menchik (Woman World Champion 1927-44) was the first woman player to face the top masters with a fair amount of success. She defeated quite a few strong players like Samuel Reshevsky, FD Yates, Mir Sultan Khan, Sir George Thomas etc. In those days the defeated men were known as 'Menchik Club'. Menchik was born in Prague in 1906 and married a Briton. She died with all other members of her family in a German air raid on London in June 1944. The war ended the life of one of the strongest women chess players that we have seen over the last 100 years or so. As a player, Menchik had an attacking style. But the game below shows that her positional play was equally good.

The Czechoslovak Chess Federation took the organisation of the 1931 Olympiad. As much as 22 teams applied for entrance and 3 of them withdrew before the start. The players' list was impressive. Poland, the titleholders did not alter their squad. Alekhine was brough on French top board again. Gr¼nfeld, Kashan, Marshall, Flohr, Vidmar, Bogoljubow, St¥hlberg were leading their teams, just to mention the best. Only Euwe, Capablanca and, traditionally, Nimzowitsch were missing for some reasons. Poland were certainly favourites although Rubinstein's mental ilness progressed. Austria were their most appreciated contenders. Yugoslavia lead by Vidmar seemed strong too and the Americans with the mixture of veterans and the youngsters were as usual dangerous. Germany were other top side andd the home team was taken seriously into consideration of course. It seemed it would be tough fight and indeed it was. In the final round six top teams played with each other. Poland and USA competed for a Championship. Poland were 1 point behind but their tie-break record was superior so they needed just a small win to retain the title. Yugoslavia played Latvia to defend their bronze medal position. Czechoslovakia and Austria were both hoping for high win and possibly outrun the Yugoslav team. Poland were very close, but they failed to win a match. Rubinstein's win gave them all sort of chances but Przepi³rka lost the pawn ending badly and it was over. USA won the Cup. Yugoslavia lost to Latvia and Czechoslovakia, supported by excited home crowd, beat Austria and won the medal they were so much longing for.

Who else? Certainly the Hungarians, again lead by Mar³czy were very strong. Germany lead by Ahues and S¤misch aspired for top places. Flohr was top board of Czechoslovak team but he did not have enough support from his team-mates. US team with Kashdan and Marshall on top boards was considered strong enough to earn the medal. The games were very hard, 9 teams were in the lead in the course of the event and most time there was no clear leader, just the leading group. Each team lost at least two matches. The games were organised beyond reproach and the standard of games was very high. The FIDE congress debating parallelly decided that since 1931 fixed board order should be adopted. The new rules made in Hamburg laid the foundations of future improvments and amendments to the Olympic regulations.

The USCF raised $1,000 for Kashdan to play, but he felt that would not cover his expenses. Denker would have had to finance the entire journey himself. A majority of players refused to play after a Chinese player resigned a drawn game and lost on time to other Chinese players. The player was watching other games and made no attempt to make time control against the front-runner, Xu Jun. FIDE then nullified the tournament. Later, President Campomanes reversed the decision, and ruled that the results would stand.

Chessplayer who composed chess problems when he was blind. He was responsible for the popularity of the two-mover in the early 20th century. By coincidence, a problem submitted to a composing tournament was almost identical to another problem submitted by H. Lane. They both featured the same key move. By a greater coincidence, H. Winner of the second, third, and fifth American Chess Congresses. Recognized as American chess champion from 1865 to 1890. He was a Lieutenant in the British army and a Captain in the US Army, fighting for the North during the Civil War. Maelzel, Johann (1772-1838)
Mechanical engineer who bought the Turk from Wolfgang von Kempelen's son. He supposedly invented the metronome and was a good friend of Beethoven. Prince Eugene de Beauharnais bought the Turk from Maelzel in 1811 for 30,000 francs and Maelzel gave part of the money to Beethoven. In 1817 he bought the Turk back from the Prince for the same sum. No cash was handed over to the Prince, but Maelzel was to pay from any profit he might make. The Prince died but his heirs sued Maelzel for the balance. Maelzel fled to America with the Turk to escape the debts and lawsuits. Maelzel was buried at sea in 1838 after dying on a ship bound from Cuba to America. Magazine, Chess

Girl Chess: How It Was
While segregation of gender in chess wasn't always true -woman and men often played together, both in Literature and reality before 1800; Shakespeare's only chess scene has Miranda playing Ferdinand in the last act of The Tempest; many paintings depict men and women playing at chess together; Ben Franklin, as well as Paul Morphy were fond of playing against ladies. Women, however, were often barred from the private clubs as well as the coffeehouses and the taverns where these chess clubs developed in the 19th century.
By the middle of that century, female players started to gain their own chessic distinction - separate from men . The first chess clubs exclusively for women were organized in The Netherlands in 1847. The first chess book written by a woman, The ABC of Chess, by "A Lady" (H.I. Cooke), appeared in England in 1860 and went into 10 editions. The first women's tournament was sponsored in 1884 by the Sussex Chess Association.
Women also gained a certain prominance in postal and problem chess during this period. An American woman, Ellen Gilbert, defeated a strong English amateur, George Gossip, twice in an international correspondence match in 1879 - announcing checkmate in 21 moves in one game and in 35 moves in the other!! Edith Winter-Wood composed more than 2,000 problems, 700 of which appeared in a book published in 1902. The first woman player to gain attention in direct OTB competition with men was Vera Menchik (1906-44) of Great Britain.
