BBC News Online
World chess champion Garry Kasparov is preparing for the fourth and final match in his latest attempt to beat a computer at the game - but he has a long track record of playing non-human adversaries.
Garry Kasparov has striven to avenge his defeat by Deeper Blue "Machines are stupid by nature": that was Garry Kasparov's disparaging verdict on his first encounter with a computerised opponent. It was 1996 and Mr Kasparov, the world's number one human exponent of the game, had just beaten the IBM Deep Blue computer - although he admitted it was a tough match. Even so, he had spoken too soon, because the following year, he lost in a return bout with the upgraded and renamed Deeper Blue. Some grand claims have been made for that contest, with some chess buffs hailing it as a moment to rank with the 1969 Moon landing as a milestone in human history. For the first time, a machine had beaten a person in a mental struggle that Mr Kasparov himself described as "species-defining".

Since the human brain is a massively parallel neural computer, it is conceivable that we could build a massively parallel computer powerful enough to declare itself the King of the Earth, enslave the human race and challenge God as the Supreme Being.

interviewed by Reuben Abati for The Nigerian Guardian Most recently, Deep Blue, an IBM computer played Chess with Garry Kasparov, the greatest living Chess grandmaster and won. Do you feel breakthroughs in artificial intelligence are getting to a point when they threaten man as man, and all the values we hold dear as God's most favored creation?
Unfortunately, IBM and the media is describing the Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov match as a machine versus man contest. I view it as men (computer programmers) versus man showdown. The media ignored the computer programmers that used a massively parallel computer to defeat Garry Kasporov. It was massively parallel computing technology, not artificial intelligence, which enabled it to perform extremely fast calculations that won. Those chess grandmasters that believed that a computer can never defeat Garry Kasparov never understood how computers work.

Interview with Garry Kasparov
At your 38 years old you are still the number one. What is your motivation, now that you have already won everything?
I have always loved playing chess, and for me playing chess is about “winning”, and I couldn’t imagine myself playing chess for fun, because winning is a part of the challenge. At one point, when you are used to fighting for your number one spot, you will not be able to imagine yourself giving it up without a fight. In many years I faced several crucial points when people said “Garry will no longer be the best player”, and it encourages me, it strengthens my determination to fight again.
And it’s very clear that my success in 2001 was dictated by the disaster in London. Also my very successful years in 1999 and 2000 resulted from growing criticism of me in 1997 when I didn’t play much chess and Anand was doing very well. So, as long as I have my energy in place, I will be fighting.
In your last match against Kramnik you were only able to defeat him in the blitz games. Whose turn is it now, yours or his?

Shannon Stapleton, Reuters In six games beginning Sunday, Kasparov will match wits with an Israeli-programmed computer called Deep Junior. And this time, Kasparov says, it's a fair fight. "Deep Blue was more about PR, selling the story, scaring the human race," he said in what might be described as chess trash-talk. "This machine is a real opponent. It's not hiding behind a curtain." By contrast, his six games against Deep Junior, beginning Sunday in New York, will be sanctioned by the international governing body of chess and will be subject to a human appeals committee to guarantee fairness.

Computer downs World Champion Kasparov
NEW YORK - It's the day after IBM's Deep Blue's shocking defeat of world champion Garry Kasparov. The champion's choice of opening in game 6 looked to be a serious mistake. Garry's anti-computer strategy was working when he was white, and in game 4 where he was black. It's very possible that he ran out of ideas. When you're black it's not possible to dictate the course of action. While team Deep Blue celebrates, and Kasparov regroups, there are talks of a talks of a rematch. From my point of view this makes sense. If Kasparov defeated Deep Blue for the second time then another battle would not be necessary. A tiebreaker match would be very interesting. Now Kasparov knows what he's dealing with. If there is a third match, Will Kasparov repeat the mistake of treating Deep Blue as just another computer. I don't think so. We'll see him a his best looking for IBM blood and revenge. But for now Deep Blue's impressive victory will be talked about by computer people and chess players alike. BLOOMBERG NEWS
WILMINGTON, Del. Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov was accused by First International Bank of Israel Ltd. of failing to repay a $1.6 million loan, leaving the next move to a Delaware judge.
In a lawsuit made public Friday in Delaware Chancery Court, the bank says it loaned the money to Kasparov, for 18 years the world's top chess player, and he signed an agreement in September 2000 to secure the loan with assets of his start-up company, Kasparov Chess Online Inc.
The bank says Kasparov ordered the money-making Web site shut down last week and abandoned the business even though his company had pledged to keep the site operating.

In this unique series of videos, World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov tells his own amazing story, from teenage hotshot to modern chess icon. For the first time ever we go behind the scenes and catch the inside stories to discover the real Garry Kasparov. Along the way we will gain a privileged insight into how the strongest player of all time learns and improves. Every chess player will be fascinated by Garry’s unique chess theories of "material, time and quality". Indeed, Garry's often nonchalant attitude to material and his patented tactical bludgeonings remain the new blueprint for aspiring attacking players today. Kasparov's style - brash, energetic and aggressive - has set the standard for the next generation of chessplayers, where risk-taking in the pursuit of victory has almost become an end in itself. As Garry takes an emotional trip through his career, he holds up up for examination some of his most cherished memories, forged in nerve-wracking hours spent in mental combat at the board.
