Game 5: Garry takes draw in wild sacrificial game
Game 5 turned out to be the most exciting game of the Kasparov vs. Computer match but, like a dinner in a Chinese restaurant, it left the viewers unsatisfied.
The Final Position after move 19
The computer did something which no computer has ever done before in top level competition. It sacrificed a bishop on general principles, without having a concrete variation to back it up. The computer played the well known Bxh2+ type sacrifice. This sacrifice must be calculated exactly. The game can go either way. It is almost impossible for a human player to see every variation to the end, but humans often play it anyway because they know that it often works. The critical point came on move 16. Kasparov could have played 16. g3. The computer would have two possible moves. It could check with Nh2+. However, then the White king could just walk away with moves like 17. Kf2 Ng4+ 18. Ke1. Kasparov said after the game that he was afraid of Qh2 instead. However, then with care Kasparov could push up his pawns with moves like f5 and e4, blocking the development of his own pieces and creating space for his king to run. It seems that with best play Kasparov had a win. However, out of respect for the awesome calculating power of his opponent, and perhaps forgetting that the computer is limited in how far ahead it can see, Kasparov headed into a variation which guaranteed a quick draw.

By Chris Jones of the BBC's News Profiles Unit
He was perhaps the best the world had ever seen, a tiger of the chessboard who would seize an opportunity to go for the jugular and destroy his opponent's ego. But at 37, Garry Kasparov, the dominant male, has had to submit to the young pretender, the 25-year-old Russian, Vladimir Kramnik. And the experts and enthusiasts, whether watching at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, or following every move on the internet, have been baffled by the demise of the king of the chess jungle. Hullabooloo in Hammersmith
The man who became the youngest-ever world champion at 22 had sent away all previous challengers with their tails between their legs. Kasparov, once described by the former British Number One, Nigel Short, as a "thoroughly unpleasant person" is, by consensus, usually arrogant and aggressive, but had mobilised these traits, together with his enormous energy, to undermine his opponents. That is, until Kramnik came along. A tired-looking Kasparov surprised everyone by offering quick draws to Kramnik, a quiet, calm character without a hint of volatility.
