This interview was first published in New Scientist.
Every Move you Make (an amazing article about how computers have changed chess)
He stared in horror, then buried his head in his hands. Garry Kasparov, the world's top chess player, had lost to a computer, Deep Blue. It was a major insult to human brain power. But six years later, in 2003, he fought back to a fragile draw against another chess program, Deep Junior. So why is he now talking about computers giving chess a new lease of life, or even turning it into a new game? Kasparov explained all to Will Knight
Why are you taking such an interest in playing chess against computers?
From an early age I thought it was my duty to be on the edge of the development of the game, and I realised that chess would be related to computer development. I was even quite excited to see some of the early programs in 1984 and 1985. I encouraged some independent German guys to develop ChessBase. We had some discussions, and I told them it would be a great idea to have a database to utilise computers' power to help chess players to improve their preparation and help with the analysis. It was very, very primitive. In 1987, the first version of ChessBase ran only on Atari computers. Since then they have made tremendous progress. Many people didn't really believe it would be that important, but I sensed it would have a tremendous impact on the game. And it has.
Have computers changed the game forever?

Garry Kasparov was born in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, on 13 April 1963. By the age of six, his talent had already been recognised. At 13 Kasparov was crowned the Soviet Junior Champion and at 17 he became the junior world champion and an international Grand Master. At the 1984 World Championships in Moscow, Kasparov was destined to meet the reigning world champion, Anatoly Karpov. Karpov promptly won the four games of their first eight, needing just one more victory to retain his world title. But then Ksaparov held Karpov to 17 consecutive draws, forcing FIDE to cancel the match after five months, citing exhaustion by both players. A year later, Kasparov came back to defeat Karpov and make history as the youngest ever world champion, at age 22. Kasparov later successfully defended his title against Karpov in 1986, 1987 and 1990. He has also shaken off the challenge of England's Nigel Short in 1993 and

Chess has strong roots in Azerbaijan. Some claim it dates back to the sixth century, perhaps even earlier. References to chess have been made by poets of the region in twelfth century works. During the Soviet period (after a shaky beginning when chess was nearly banned because it was perceived as a game for the bourgeoisie), the USSR became known for producing the world's best players. The image of the chess player came to epitomize the ideal Soviet man-possessed with logic, will, and decisiveness: man as the perfect synthesis of thought and action.
Therefore, to focus on "Leisure and Play in Azerbaijan" without discussing the game of chess would be like trying to cover American sports without discussing football or baseball. And to highlight chess without featuring Garry Kasparov would be like setting up a chess board without a King.
We found Garry in Croatia. Though extremely occupied with preparing for the upcoming World Champion Games, he very willingly assisted us with this article.

Customer Reviews Like the first book, this one is well produced, and has some good games and annotations. This one covers Euwe to Tal, as well as some sections on Keres, Bronstein and Geller.Unlike the first book, there were some extensive personal touches to his chapters on these champs who overlapped his own lifetime. That's why I gave it an extra star. All the same, the problems that have been widely noted with the first one apply to this one as well. We really expect far more from such a great player. Kasparov on sports: 'Human actions in extreme conditions' at Stanford BY DIANE MANUEL A funny thing happened on his way to Stanford last Thursday night, Garry Kasparov told the overflow audience at the SEQ Teaching Center that had gathered to hear him speak about the "Limits of Performance." He was late for the talk, he said apologetically, because he'd had to wait in the lobby of his hotel for 30 minutes while an "antiquated machine" printed out the 11 pages of his speech. "Can you believe that a hotel in Silicon Valley does not have a laser printer?" he asked, grinning, enjoying the moment immensely. "Not even a chess player can predict some of the obstacles that happen, but it seems I was kept away from you by the limits of the performance of the hotel." Related Information: World chess champion since 1985 and, some have argued, the best professional chess player ever, Kasparov carries himself with well-earned confidence. But there is also a streak of the rebel and a hint of the prankster in the Azerbaijani native. As flash bulbs exploded in the auditorium, Kasparov surveyed the audience thoughtfully. Fastening on several different youngsters in the crowd, he welcomed them with private winks.

NEW YORK (Reuters) World No. 1 chess player Garry Kasparov was held to a draw on Tuesday in the first game of his latest match against a computer and admitted having difficulty with the program's virtual reality component. Kasparov and the programmers of "X3D Fritz" agreed to a draw on the 37th move after three hours and 20 minutes of play in a hard-fought game in which Kasparov won a powerful rook in exchange for a bishop and a pawn in the middlegame, but could not convert that slight material advantage into a victory. The grandmaster played the program without physically moving chess pieces on a board or pressing the button of a chess clock. Instead, he sat in front of a computer monitor wearing 3-D glasses that made the on-screen image of the board appear to float in front of him.
