World Champion Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess
Opens in Lindsborg 106 S. Main Street
    Lindsborg, KS 67456
'It gives me great pleasure to announce the opening of the first Karpov International School of Chess in the United States,' said Anatoly Karpov. The school in Lindsborg, Kansas will join my network of 14 existing Karpov chess schools throughout the world. I have decided to open the school in Lindsborg because of the extraordinary support given to chess by the Lindsborg Chess Club, the city officials, the State of Kansas, and the people in the Lindsborg community.
Anatoly Karpov, who lives in Moscow, Russia, won the title of World Chess Champion in 1975 when then champion Bobby Fischer refused to defend his title. Karpov successfully defended his title until 1985, and then regained it in 1993 when he again won the world championship.
Karpov established more than 30 chess schools throughout the world, including schools in Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. He selected Lindsborg, Kansas to be the site of his first school in the United States, and the school instructors will provide instruction in chess tactics and theory, and it will also sponsor a number of major tournaments each year. 'It's probably befitting that Karpov should establish his first school here in Lindsborg (a.k.a. “Little Sweden, U.S.A.”), ‘ said Mikhail Korenman, director of the new school, 'after all, Karpov established his first school in Sweden.'

      • Gata Kamsky, USA, 2735, 22 years old Kamsky has had an astonishing career. Since defecting from Russia at the age of 14, he has avoided Junior events, and competed directly with adults. He and Anand were the only two players to achieve the quarter finals or higher in BOTH the PCA and FIDE World Championship cycles last year. Kamsky defeated Anand in the FIDE event, and is now the challenger in the FIDE match. Kamsky lost to Anand during the PCA semi-finals in Spain last year. Kamsky has filed official grievances regarding his FIDE rating, which he feels has not accurately taken into account his PCA events, and should be higher. Still very young, still improving rapidly, and still developing an individual style, Kamsky, is one of the brightest stars in chess today.

The power of XSL lies in its ability to perform radical transformations of the XML data source. This page contains yet another proof for this fact: you can build a chessgame viewer with a stylesheet! The source document is a transcription of a chess game played by Garry Kasparov against a chess supercomputer IBM Deep Blue. The game is encoded in a form resembling the well-known Portable Game Notation (PGN) format. The source is very compact: a sample game on this page [ DeepBlue.xml ] is less than 4 kBytes in size. The stylesheet converts this arid text into a sequence of board diagrams, drawing every intermediate position as a graphical image (a special chess font is used). Applying a 23 kB stylesheet [ chess.xsl ], we get a 415 kBytes (!) FO stream [ DeepBlue.fo

ANATOLY KARPOV The champion is a well-known guest in Austria - he was playing in Austrian "Staatsliga" and the European cup for the Viennese Chess Club Margareten. Very much like Petrosian in style, Karpov plays highly positional chess. He plays without taking many risks, and without making many mistakes. He waits for his opponents to make the slightest inaccuracy and then he grinds them to dust. Karpov won the World Championship title in 1975 when Bobby Fischer forfeited the match to him. He held this title for nine years, until he was brought down by Garry Kasparov in 1984.

The concept of a world chess championship extends back beyond the match in 1886 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johann Zukertort, a battle that Steinitz won, +10 -5 =5. References to Paul Morphy as a world chess champion or as the champion of the chess world were numerous in the late 1850s and early 1860s. Steinitz himself spoke of being “champion” in the early 1870s. What follows is an annotated list of matches and tournaments that have been interpreted by chess scholars as having something to do with determining who was world chess champion at a given moment. In the case of, say, the match between Alexander Alekhine and Jose Capablanca in 1927, chess writers are unanimous in considering the match to be for the world chess championship. In the case of, say, the second match between Howard Staunton and Pierre Saint-Amant in 1843, only those chess writers who extend the title line back further than Steinitz-Zukertort 1886 would include this event as being for the world title. Here, then, is our list of the world title canon with the match winner listed first:

Viswanathan Anand added a fourth world- level title to his collection this year as he rebounded strongly from a first-game loss to beat veteran Anatoly Karpov of Russia 4-2, in the final of the sixth edition of the Corsica Open chess tournament played in Bastia, France. Over the last three months Anand has won the Eurotel title in Prague in May, followed by the Chess Classic of Mainz title in July, the World Cup in Hyderabad in October and now the Corsica Open. In the final against Karpov, another former FIDE World champion like Anand, the Indian lost the first game but bounced back to win the next with white pieces and send the match into a play-off. They drew the next two before Anand won the last two games played in the blitz format. This was the first match in the knockout stage where Anand had been stretched beyond the normal two-game match. In what turned out to be a thrilling days event, the finals proved every bit an entertainer with both the finalists matching each other in rapid and blitz chess. But Anand showed that he had greater desire to win the Euro 20000 top prize, as he dug in deep to equalise 1-1 after a first game defeat. Two rapid draws later, Anand struck deadly in the fifth game with black pieces and finished with a final salvo mating Karpov in the sixth game.

Friday night Karpov exhibited masterful technique and time control in the first game, winning for a 2-1 lead. The second game resulted in a draw, leaving the final match score 2.5 Karpov, 1.5 Kasparov. In a press conference following the match, Kasparov indicated that he'd never quite recovered from Karpov's win in the second game.

    Anatoly Karpov
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Anatoli Yevgenyevic Karpov (born May 23 ) is a Russian chess player. Karpov was born in Zlatoust[?] Russia and started off his playing career by annexing the Junior World Championship (not won by a Russian since Boris Spassky ), everything sky-rocketed from there. After the Junior world championship, Karpov was a "mere" grandmaster , but in the following year there was a "quantum leap" in his playing strength. The first Candidates cycle (1974) he participated in was the one to find a challenger for the then World Champion, Bobby Fischer . Karpov beat Robert Byrne[?] in the first Candidates match to face the ex-World Champion Boris Spassky in the next round. Karpov was on record to say that it would be Spassky that would win the Candidates cycle to face Fischer, but Karpov would win the following Candidates cycle (1977). The Spassky-Karpov match was a spectacle. Tenacious and aggressive play from Karpov secured him a memorable win (an exquisite Sicilian Scheveningen was probably the game of the match). The Candidates final match was against fellow Russian Viktor Korchnoi , a notable fighting player. Intense games were fought, one "opening laboratory" win against the Sicilian Dragon, and Karpov had achieved the right to challenge Fischer for the World Championship.
