Anatoly Karpov 12th World Champion, 1975 - 1985
FIDE Champion 1993 - present In 1993 Kasparov rejected FIDE leaving Karpov to play in the official FIDE World Championship match in which he defeated Jan Timman of the Netherlands. However, his victory was over-shadowed by the independent championship match played at the same time between the current World Champion, Kasparov and British Grandmaster, Nigel Short. Both Karpov and Kasparov won their championship matches and both claim the title of World Champion. His style of play is positional. He describes his game philosophy as follows: "Let us say the game may be continued in two ways: one of them is a beautiful tactical blow that gives rise to variations that don't yield to precise calculation; the other is clear positional pressure that leads to an endgame with microscopic chances of victory.... I would choose the latter without thinking twice. If the opponent offers keen play I don't object; but in such cases I get less satisfaction, even if I win, than from a game conducted according to all the rules of strategy with its ruthless logic."

LINDSBORG (AP) Lindsborg has captured a major chess player. Former world champion Anatoly Karpov will appear at the Lindsborg Rotary Open in December. Karpov is not expected to play, but his presence should help the tournament draw a crowd. ''It's really unheard of for someone of that caliber to come to a small town,'' said Wes Fisk, president of the 60-member Lindsborg Chess Club, which sponsors the event with funding from the local Rotary Club. The event has expanded from three to seven days, he said, and like the 2001 tournament, a number of high-ranking players from the United States and world are expected Dec. 17-23. Karpov was world champion from 1975 when Bobby Fischer forfeited the title until 1984 when he lost it to Garry Kasparov. After Kasparov broke away from the FIDE, the World Chess Federation, and was stripped of the title, Karpov was FIDE world champion from 1993 to 1999. Ralph Bowman, Kansas Chess Association board member and executive vice president of the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association, said Karpov's arrival will be the first time a world chess champion has ever visited the state. The tournament also will have more grand masters competing than in any previous Kansas event, he said.
