The book is intended for beginners, aswell as people who do not know how to play chess at all. It first teaches the reader about the pieces, how they move and can capture, aswell as the other chess rules. ( pawn promotion, castling, checking, checkmate etz ). Then, the main point of the rest of the book seams to be to show the beginner/novice to see basic mating patterns. ... [ read more Rating: A Must Have For All Students of The Game...

1000 WORDS: BOBBY FISCHER GOES TO WAR
TEV inaugurates its new 1000 WORDS column, a semi-regular series of book reviews of - you guessed it - a thousand words (or less). Thoughts and comments are welcome as we test drive this new feature. Return tomorrow for the usual melange of links. 1000 WORDS: Bobby Fischer Goes to War
How the Soviets Lost the Most Extraordinary Match of All Time
David Edmonds and John Eidinow
Ecco
342 pp.
More than a dozen years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and thirty years after the event it chronicles, Bobby Fischer Goes to War returns us to the small gray Icelandic capital where, for a few months, East met West in a titanic showdown that was read as a surrogate for the nothing less than the Cold War itself. The Soviet machine would be brought to its knees by good old Yankee ingenuity. But as authors David Edmonds and John Eidinow go to great pains to make clear, neither Fischer nor Spassky were ideal representatives of their native systems. Spassky was ever the free spirit, undisciplined in his party devotions, Russian but never Soviet. Fischer was an uncouth prima donna, berating match personnel, journalists and governmental figures alike. By the end, neither side was eager to claim their representatives – Spassky disgraced and defeated; Fischer rude and erratic, concerned only with his payout.

It will NOT improve your knowledge of openings, strategy, or endings. If you want to become an expert on back-rank mates, this is the book for you. If you want to know why Fischer is considered one of the greatest players of all time, read his "60 Memorable Games". If you are a beginner, this book is totally inadequate preparation for his magnum opus. I rate Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess Customer Review #2: Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess The book that gives you the eye of a eagle in chess This is one of the best teaching method book i had ever read. Its great for starter. This book teaches the common mating postions and combination for you to improve your skill. It show you puzzle for you to solve so that it makes you a better player. Now after reading this book, It makes me feel like kicking somebodys butt in chess!!! So Enjoy the book cause i did.

Customer Reviews Its a really interesting clash of cultures. Here you have Boris Spassky, from the more structured USSR, being the more cultured and open person. On the other side you have Fischer, the brash spoiled egotist coming from the USA making ultimatums and demands that threaten the very championships he wanted to attain. You would think it would be the other way around, but once you get into reading the book, you realize that this was about so much more than just a couple of chess games in Reykjavik. A very enlightening, quick read. For those who don't know much about chess or even want to know, the authors to an exceptional job at downplaying the actual games and making important points only when necessaryand when they do they describe it in such terms anyone could understand. Authors David Edmonds and John Eidinow, responsible for the best-selling "Wittgenstein's Poker," have now turned to the surprisingly gripping 1972 World Championship chess match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer in their new book, "Bobby Fischer Goes to War."As someone who is old enough to remember the match (and who watched Shelby Lyman's engagingly dorky commentary about the matches on Channel 13), I thought I knew the outline of this story fairly well. After a grueling match, Fischer trumped Spassky, a victory that wags unabashedly celebrated as America's symbolic triumph over the Soviets. But the media frenzy drove the reclusive Fischer into exile, a self-imposed deportation he maintained until he emerged in 1992 to beat Spassky in Yugoslavia. Following U.S. accusations that he had violated sanctions against Yugoslavia, Fischer disappeared again, out of sight but not, according to one man, out of cyber circulation.
