A Discussion Guide by
by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat "The ultimate human work is the shaping of a soul."
The process of shaping a soul begins in childhood as we listen to the voices inside us and cautiously pay attention to the words and deeds of our parents. We heed the imperatives of play and pleasure as we reach out to experience a wider world. Values and visions are tested, and we begin to express our own singular nature in a variety of ways. Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) is based on a 1984 book of the same title about a seven-year-old chess prodigy, Josh Waitzkin. Written and directed by Steven Zaillian, this engaging drama offers a behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating world of chess tournaments and the widespread yearning within this community for a successor to appear on the scene with the genius, flair, and intensity of American champion Bobby Fischer. I stand by the conclusions, but in most cases many details are missing that I would normally include today.] So are you searching for a good movie for the whole family? Does your household have preteens in it who have outgrown the little kid movies, but still would like to see shows that are exciting and that can inspire them? Do you like shows that not just for preteens, but the whole family can enjoy?

Pros
A fine job of uncovering the entire story.
Cons I guess you should know how to play chess before reading this. The Bottom Line This should stand as the definitive account of the Fischer-Spassky chess match of 1972. Full Review The average American only remembers one chess match if he's, say, 40 years of age or older. There have been many champions and great matches over the past century or so, but Fischer-Spassky is the match for the ages. Boris Spassky was the world champion in 1972. He represented the best in Soviet chess, which had dominated the game for the previous 25 years or so. The Soviets put chess up there with the ballet and the circus in terms of national pride, and losing the title would be a national disgrace. Bobby Fischer was the challenger. The American was a child prodigy, astonishing chess circles from an early age. He had won chess tournaments without losing a game, which is kind of like winning Wimbledon without losing a game. Fischer also had a bizarre personality, to put it charitably, as he made impossible demands on organizers, opponents, friends, etc. He was in top form against Spassky in this area.

Three Days With Bobby Fischer and Other Chess Essays: How to Meet Champions and Choose Your Openings > Customer Review #1: Why are Alburts books so hard to follow?

I read three of his, including this one. The Pirc, for the benefit of the doubt, is so advanced that I could not understand. The Rules of Thumb, so general that I could find from other books. This book, only the first thin section is about Fischer, the rest is like a condensed version of chess magazines. It takes only 10 minutes to read all about Fischer in this book. I recommend the Gufelds book about Fischer, deeper, more stories and games of Fischers.

Justin's Review: A movie about chess. Cough. Kill me now. String me up by my thumbs, force me to watch the entire lifespan of a fly and then trace his 28,000 decendents through day two... it might be a better thing. Don't get me wrong, I like to play chess, but a MOVIE about CHESS? Let's consider how you might make that interesting. My vision for Chess: The Movie goes like this. First, it'd have to be live-action. Make all the helpless pawns the most irritating Hollywood actors and actresses you can think of. Pauly Shore, Carrot Top, David Arquette, Fran Dreschner, Poochie the Dog, the Wayans Brothers, Jar-Jar Binks, and just for the heck of it, Julia Roberts. Then give the rooks long-range nuclear capacity. Then have the horsies be Mr. Ed and Babe. Make Samuel L. Jackson be one of the kings, and Mel Gibson be the other one. Have the bishops perform "Crouching Tiger" martial arts (running up the side of the board, skipping over the tops of the other pieces). Both queens should be ex-girlfriends on PMS. Then have the entire movie consist of long fight sequences, with derogatory remarks made about other, "lesser" board games. Knight: Go back to playing Scrabble, you Q-U-I-T-T-E-R!

BOBBY FISCHER SPEAKS OUT!
"Fischer does not merely outplay opponents; he leaves them bodily and mentally glutted.... Fisher himself speaks of the exultant instant in which he feels the 'ego of the other player crumbling.' "
-George Steiner, Fields of Force "Fischer is... the strongest player in the world. In fact, the strongest player who ever lived."
-Larry Evans, U.S. International Grandmaster
Bobby Fischer is the undisputed "psych-out" champion in the world of chess. On this cerebral battlefield, he has crushed many an ego with his ferocious, relentless attack coupled with his steely-cold logic and near perfect strategy. Bobby was born in Chicago on May 9, 1943, but grew up in Brooklyn, New York. On his sixth birthday, he received a gift of destiny from his sister Joan-a chess set. Since that time, little else interested Bobby, who played chess for hours every day. Consequently, his knowledge and skill grew enormously. In 1956 he won the junior chess championship of the United States at the age of thirteen. The next year he won the prestigious U.S. championship. He continued his meteoric rise, and in 1958, he placed fifth in the interzonal tournament at Portoroz, Yugoslavia, thus qualifying at fifteen years of age as the youngest International Grandmaster ever.

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess > Customer Review #1: for beginners

No offense, but the previous rewiever who said " experienced players " will benefit aswell as beginners is completely wrong.
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess > Customer Review #2: A Must Have For All Students of The Game... This is a phenomenal program for beginning players, depending on their age. I found that the most valuable element of this book is the increasing complexity of strategies introduced as one advances in basic knowledge of the game. Personally, and again this is just my humble opinion, I did not find this appropriate for my beginning chess players, ages 6 and 9. Although this is an extremely well-written program, we needed something a bit more visual and basic in its presentation initially. Our first choice was The Kids Book of Chess/Book and Kids Chess Set by Harvey Kidder and Kimberly Bulcken Root. Again, I preface this review by saying that although I did not start my younger players with this book, I find that it is ABSOLUTELY essential for every chess player to have.

CHESS: WHERE IS BOBBY FISCHER? MANILA, January 2, 2004 (STAR) SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson - There’s a book that’s just been released in the market and it puts together 24 of the best feature articles published in Sport Magazine from 1948 to 1973. It’s called "The Best of Sport–Classic Writing from the Golden Era of Sports" with Bob Ryan as guest editor. The stories recount the exploits of such stars as Jackie Robinson, Babe Zaharias, Joe DiMaggio, Elgin Baylor, Bear Bryant, Sugar Ray Robinson, Johnny Weissmuller, Bantam Ben Hogan, Bill Russell, Arnold Palmer, Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali and the reclusive chess wizard Bobby Fischer, among others. Dick Shaap penned the article on Fischer. It was titled "Bobby Fischer Can Lick Ali Any Day–in Ego" and published in the February 1973 issue of Sport. The book ends each story with an epilogue that brings the reader up to date. So in the Fischer story, there’s an account of what has since happened to the chess star. Fischer, of course, is close to the heart of Filipino sports fans. He has visited here often and in 1992, took in Asia’s first grandmaster Eugene Torre as his second in the "Revenge Match of the 20th Century" against Boris Spassky in war-torn Montenegro.

Chess in the media:
Bobby Fischer redux
by John Hillery
No chess figure can draw media attention like Bobby Fischer. Though he has not returned to play (and there is no likelihood he ever will), an article by Rene Chun in the December Atlantic Monthly again points the spotlight at the second pride and sorrow of chess. Not surprisingly, much attention is given to Fischer's ... odd political views. He is apparently sincere in believing that a world-wide Jewish conspiracy divides its time equally between stealing everyone's money (communism was, of course, a Jewish front), sacrificing children, and persecuting Bobby Fischer. He seems not to have contradictions of this worldview, such as why, if the Secret Masters are so powerful, they allow Fischer to go around revealing their secrets. The larger part of the article does, however, recount Fischer's chess career. It is done fairly well, though the author is clearly not a chess player. (To assert that Spassky "easily" won the first game in Reykjavik is commit a terminological inexactitude). Errors are less often of fact than of emphasis. For example, to accuse Fischer of reneging on commitments and demanding more money as an excuse not to play during the 1960s is slightly anachronistic. He certainly did this after 1972, but in hindsight, many of his demands during the 1960s for more prize money, better playing conditions, and a more equitable balance of power between players and organizers do not look all that unreasonable.
