Fischer Random Chess - News
Bobby Fischer, (the former world champion chess), proposed a variant of chess, where the game is played from a randomly generated setup. Here, you will find a collection of news items on the game.
Grandmaster Leko on Fischer Random Chess
In an interview in Schaakmagazine , the magazine of the Dutch chess federation (KNSB - Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaak Bond), in February 2000, Peter Leko from Hungary mentioned Fischer Random Chess. Grandmaster Leko is currently having the sixth highest ELO-rating (i.e., he is considered to be the sixth' best chess player in the world), at an age of 20. In the interview, he is asked what Fischer (a friend of Leko) thinks of his level of chess. Leko answers: (the text below is a translation of the text, as it appeared in Dutch in the journal. I.e., Leko's literal words probably have been different.) That is private, that is between us. But he does not believe anymore in the classic chess game, he thinks his random chess is the chess of the future. That form of chess is interesting and I would like to see tournaments with random chess been origined. Just from curiosity who would be the strong players in random chess. I already played such a tournament once. You cannot prepare yourself at all, you must use your imagination. It can go totally wrong from at the beginning.

Without giving up little league baseball, he learns how to play, hanging out with Vinnie (Laurence Fishburne) and a group of speed chess hustlers who occupy nearby Washington Square. It isn't long before Josh is able to beat them all. His father, looking to take him to the next level, employs ex-chess master Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kingsley) as a teacher. Under Pandolfini, Josh matures as a player, and, for the first time, he starts to fear losing. Searching for Bobby Fischer is based on the true life story of Josh Waitzkin who, at the age of sixteen, is currently the highest-ranked American player under eighteen. It isn't just Josh's tale, however. The name and image of the mysterious chess genius Bobby Fischer infiltrate this movie. Fischer is as much an icon to this game as Babe Ruth is to baseball.

These articles promoted the myth of Fischer as a relatively weak speed player, who inexplicably and miraculously got good. It was also in these articles that great chess men such as Boris Spassky and Tal wrote about Fischer in a tone that was not their own. Not their own? Am I saying that words that appeared under the names of Spassky, Tal and other grandmasters were invented by others?

Bobby Fischer Talks!
"This is all wonderful. I applaud this act….Arrest all the Jews, execute hundreds of thousands of their leaders, apologize to the Arabs. I am hoping for a totally new world." Bobby Fischer, interviewed on Philippine radio hours after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
FISCHER CHECKS IN FROM CUCKOO LAND promptly reported the New York Post: "Osama bin Laden has at least one grandmaster fan Bobby Fischer, the pariah of the chess world."
The reclusive American alleged that a Jewish conspiracy prevented him from playing chess for 20 years between 1972 and 1992. The irony is Fischer himself is Jewish.
"I object to being called a chess genius, because I consider myself to be an all-around genius who just happens to play chess," he modestly asserted. He also invented ludicrous smears against other grandmasters, after years of silence, in a bizarre series of rabid radio interviews.
In a controversial decision, the executive board of the United States Chess Federation found his remarks sufficiently offensive to revoke his lifetime membership in the USCF, a courtesy extended to all American grandmasters.

March 9 ~  Making Good Moves Logical Chess: Move by Move
"I don't believe in p s y c h o l o g y I believe in good moves." ~ Bobby Fischer Eccentric, but definitely someone with good moves, American chess master Robert James Fischer (1943-) was born on this day in Chicago, Illinois. He learned chess at six, then became the youngest ranking grand master at the mere age of 15. In 1972, Fischer was the first American to win the World Chess Championship, beating Russian champion, Boris Spassky. In a historic event that lasted two months, Fischer lost the first game , protested the presence of cameras, and forfeited the second game. In the next four games, with confidence , astonishing moves, aggressive tactics, and brilliant combinations, he beat Spassky. At one point, Soviet security dismantled Fischer's chair to look for information-feeding electronic devices. Fischer's victory made him a legend and breathed life into the game of chess. "I like the moment when I break a man's ego," Fischer said. The game of chess was introduced in India in the year 531.

Exeter Chess Club:
Lessons from Bobby Fischer Unfortunately Bobby can't be with us this evening, so I have agreed to stand in. Fischer's legacy is rather mixed but there are two heirlooms of enormous value: the excitement he imparted to the game of chess in the West, and the quality of his games and annotations. I can remember sitting with a chess set, on the sea-front with my Uncle Don at Lowestoft, going over the first game of the Fischer-Spassky match in 1972; passers-by knew all about the game! How different that must have been to the matches of the nineteen-fifties. The fact that he went on in the endgame to make what looked to me like a beginner's blunder only added to the attraction of the man. His book, My 60 Memorable Games , was one of the first adult books on chess I bought, and while it was far too hard for me at the time (and still is, I fear) there is much to be mined in its pages. Each time I come back to it I learn something new, and I have selected some positions below which have taught me something in each phase of the game.
