Bobby Fischer was talented. No doubt about it. But talent is common and does not always lead to greatness in the rules of chess. Bobby Fischer was a rare combination of talent and hard work. Bobby Fischer was dedicated to the game of chess and spent every minute he could studying the game by reading chess books. In fact, Bobby undoubtedly spent 10 times as much time reading chess books then he did playing chess. A former US champion GM Nick deFirmian once told me, that he believes that Fischer would have beat Kasparov in a match, because no one has ever approached the dedication Fischer has for Chess. Fischer would have studied until he could beat any challenger. Bobby Fischer did not have private chess coaches. While the Russians he was challenging would have entire teams of coaches instructing them from the time they were young, Fischer achieved his greatness alone reading books. From the time he was 10 he read of every chess book he could get his hands on.

Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (born March 9 ) was a world chess champion, and the only American FIDE world chess champion. He won the FIDE World Chess Championship on September 1 , and lost the FIDE title when he failed to defend it on April 3 . He was the second American to have been hailed as world chess champion, the first being Paul Morphy in 1858. Fischer is considered by many to have been one of the most gifted, hardest working, and best chess players of all time. Mar. 9, 1943- Chess player. In the autumn of 1992, the international grand master of chess BobbyFischer emerged from two decades of self-imposed obscurity to play a remarkable exhibition match against his old rival Boris Spassky. Fischer, who had defeated Spassky in the famous 1972 World Championship held in Reykjavik, Iceland, only to be stripped of the title three years later after refusing to defend it, won the 1992 encounter handily. His dramatic return to competition was just the latest episode in a career marked by a string of impressive victories. An eight-time United States champion, he is the only American to win a world championship in recent memory, and, until 1992, he held the record for being the youngest person to become an international grand master. Some observers have suggested that Fischer, in bringing to chess an impressive mastery of technique and combinative brilliance, created a whole new climate of appreciation for the game in the United States."It was Bobby Fischer who had, singlehandedly, made the world recognize that chess on its highest level was as competitive as football, as thrilling as a duel to the death, as aesthetically satisfying as a fine work of art, as intellectually demanding as any form of human activity," Harold C. Schonberg wrote in Grandmasters of Chess (1973). "If for no other reason, Bobby Fischer was and would be the greatest chess champion who ever lived."

Atlantic Monthly Dec.2002

Bobby Fischer has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Fischer has always received a lot of attention, but right now it seems like a tidal wave. On 17 November 2002, the Philadelphia Inquirer, in a story about Fischer and his mother Regina, said, 'FBI records obtained by The Inquirer under the Freedom of Information Act show that intermittently, from the 1940s to the 1970s, the Fischers were being watched.' See the link Fischer and the FBI in the right linkbox for that story. The Inquirer article includes a further link to scans of some of the original documents released by the FBI.

Fischer (right) last surfaced for a chess match in 1992
Chess legend Bobby Fischer, who has not been seen in public for nine years, is playing fellow Grandmasters anonymously on the web, according to a newspaper report. British Grandmaster Nigel Short has told The Sunday Telegraph he believes he has faced the American former world champion in almost 50 internet games in the past year. Fischer retreated from public view after taking the world title in possibly the most famous match of all time, a Cold War battle against Russian world champion Boris Spassky in 1972. Since then his whereabouts have remained a mystery and he has surfaced only once - in 1992 - for a 20th anniversary rematch in Yugoslavia with a $5m prize, which he won.
From this deliberately unpromising position emerged moves of extraordinary power
Nigel Short
Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short, who in 1993 challenged Russian Garry Kasparov for the world title, told the Telegraph he was almost certain he had played Fischer on the web.

Bobby Fischer Goes to War by David Edmonds and John Eidinow
by Jessa Crispin
Today it seems unlikely that one chess tournament could hold the world in thrall, but in 1972, Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky battled it out for the title of world champion under the scrutiny of everyone from the audience of the nightly news to foreign governments to Henry Kissinger. In "Bobby Fischer Goes to War," David Edmonds and John Eidinow reset the stage and give a full account of everything that was at stake in this series of chess matches. Called "the High Noon of chess, the 1972 tournament was the first real chance America had at winning a world championship in decades. The Soviets had held the title since World War II, and returning champion Spassky was considered at the top of his game. But Fischer was different than any other chess player. Not only a chess genius, he conducted psychological warfare at the chessboard. "The most interesting phenomenon about Fischer," they write, "is not the effect chess had on him, but the effect his chess had on his opponents, destroying their morale, making them feel that they were in the grip of an alien hostile force to whose powers there was no earthly answer." And whether intentionally or not, Fischer's infamous histrionics contributed to his opponents' breakdowns. He never arrived on time, he refused to play unless the chessboard, the lighting, the noise level, the audience met with his approval. Fischer was the celebrity, and the heads of the tournaments almost always bent to his will.

Chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer
Applauds 911 Attacks
By David Bamber and Chris Hastings
The Telegraph - London
Bobby Fischer, the reclusive American chess grandmaster, has broken years of silence to support the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The Telegraph has discovered that Mr Fischer gave an interview to an obscure radio station in the Philippines hours after the events on September 11.
Mr Fischer is already wanted for questioning by the FBI for breaking UN sanctions by taking part in a chess match in Serbia against Boris Spassky in 1992 - his first for 20 years.
In his interview on September 11 with Radio Bombo in Baguio City, Mr Fischer said: "This is all wonderful news. It is time to finish off the US once and for all.
"I was happy and could not believe what was happening. All the crimes the US has committed in the world. This just shows, what goes around comes around, even to the US.
"I applaud the act. The US and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians for years. Now it is coming back at the US."
Mr Fischer, 58, also attacked Israel and "Jews" who he claimed were responsible for "bringing" the attack on the World Trade Centre. He gave the interview because he is a friend of Pablo Mercado, the station manager. They met through their mutual friend Eugene Torre, the Filipino chess grandmaster.
