Each covers a separate area, offense and defense. Coach Helm handles the commentary and Coach Wilkens offers analysis every step of the way. Everything covered on these tapes can be mimicked and improve your players’ games. Each section offers drills and demonstration. The only down side, if you call it one, is the amount of material covered. The coaches need every bit of tape to handle the aspects of the game they decided to include. The first tape, on offense, runs right at 1½ hours in length. The three main areas of offense are discussed and analyzed. Ball handling, passing, and shooting skills demand proper technique and form. Coach Helm goes into great depth in delivering what a player needs to know and player demonstrations are offered every step of the way. Coach Wilkens offers analysis at the end of each section with his telestration and comments. The ball handling tips are excellent. The passing section goes into detail and offers several excellent drills. The section that I most enjoyed was on shooting skills. When the coaches talk about the B-E-E-F, it is time to listen. Lenny Wilkens Basketball Hall of Fame INTERVIEW June 19, 1999 Washington, D.C. A lot of kids want to grow up to be basketball players. When did you first think you were going to make that happen? I started to get into basketball late. I played a half a year of high school basketball and played four years of college ball. I saw my first live pro game at the end of my senior year in college. video audio It was the St. Louis Hawks playing the Boston Celtics for a championship. And I went with a friend and when I saw the excitement of the game, the fans, I saw the players out there, and I thought I could do that. And I never dreamt that I would be a professional athlete, let alone a professional coach. I didn't have that vision until the end of my senior year in college. I only played a half a year of high school basketball where I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. My dad died when I was five so I always had to have a job after school. video audio Even though I enjoyed sports, the job was first. And, of course, education was even more so. My mother really pushed for us, you know, to get a good education and two things she always said was, you know, "You always have to be accountable for what you say and what you do." And the other thing she told me was that honesty and integrity had to define your character. What happened to your dad?

Lenny Wilkens Basketball Hall of Fame Inducted into the Academy in 1999 "I learned my basketball on the playgrounds of Brooklyn. Today, being a playground player is an insult. It means all you want to do is go one-on-one, it means your fundamentals stink and you don't understand the game. But the playgrounds I knew were tremendous training grounds." Lenny Wilkens did not play high school basketball until his senior year at Brooklyn's Boys High, but he went on to a spectacular career as a player at Providence College and in the National Basketball Association. His achievements as as a professional basketball player are paralleled by his remarkable record as a coach. In 1995, as Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Lenny Wilkens surpassed Red Auerbach's record to become "the winningest coach in the history of professional basketball." The following year, he became the first coach in the history of the NBA to win over 1,000 games.
