HARBIN, China, Oct 3 (AFP) - China's trail-blazing basketball team will have an entire continent in their corner when they represent Asia at the Athens Olympics next year. News Vantage The most cost effective path to dynamic and compelling content for your site! China waltzed through the Asian Basketball Championships this week, winning seven of their eight games by at least 24 points, while beating rival South Korea 106-96 in Wednesday's final, their toughest game of the championships. With that win, China has now won 13 of the last 15 ABC crowns and will be the region's sole representative at next year's Olympics. "I've talked to them and told them I hope that when they reach the Olympic Games they can do a better job than they did at last year's World Championships," Saud Ali Al-Thani, president of the International Basketball Federation-Asia (FIBA-Asia) told AFP. "Their results will help Asia, if China can get sixth place (in the Olympics) this will be very good."

Center Wang Zhizhi has reportedly been kicked off China's basketball team for choosing to play with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers instead of at the Asian Games.
Wang, who signed last week with the Clippers, has shown an "absence of professional standards, indiscipline and indifference to the interests of the nation," according to a statement by the China Basketball Association published in the Beijing Times and the Beijing Morning Post.
The 7-foot-1 Wang, who played for the Dallas Mavericks last season, defied the association's orders to play for China at last month's World Championships and the Asian Games so he could work out in Los Angeles.
"Participating in international competitions - winning glory for the country - is every athlete's honor and obligation," the statement said. "But when the motherland needed him, he did not care about what's good for the country and was unwilling to serve his country."

Chinese Big Boys Wants to Block High
SYDNEY, September 18 (Xinhua) One day after their 119-72
loss to the United States Dream Team, China's 2.27-meter Yao Ming,
the tallest athletes in the Sydney Games, thought they would cut
the margin narrow if they were not full into fouls troubles so
early.
"Everyone can be blocked in a basketball game," said Yao Ming,
who blocked off a driving shot by American Vins Cater, the 2000
NBA slam dunk title winner, with just two minutes into their Sunday's group A match in the Sydney Olympic Games. "But the referees might never seen those NBA stars were blocked like what we did to them in the beginning of the game, so they were too sensitive to that." Yao said. Known as the "Walking Great Wall", Yao Ming and his teammates Wang Zhizhi (2.15 meters) and Menk Bateer (2.11) form the tallest front lineup in all the 12 men's basketball team in the Sydney Games. Yao and Wang shocked the sluggish American NBA stars when they helped China to lead 13-7 and 17-16 in Sunday's game but the leading only stood for some five minutes when Wang Zhizhi picked up his fourth personal fouls and Yao collected two, most of them

With the emergence of such star athletes as No. 1 draft pick Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets, an influx of Asian athletes has swept across the U.S. sporting world in recent years. Tim Kawakami, a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, said there are two reasons why more Asians and Asian Americans have appeared on the playing field. "One, it takes a while for North American sports executives to figure out where the talent is. It took Hideo Nomo, then, of course, Ichiro [Suzuki] to open the gates and the minds in America for proven Asian players to make it," he said. The influx of Asian athletes has been encouraging to some sports fans. Ohm Youngmisuk, a sportswriter who covers the New Jersey Nets for the New York Daily News, said Asian athletes have made sports more diverse and perhaps have created more awareness that Asians can be athletic too.

Notes From A Basketball Junkie
Where HoopHeads Get Their Fix! Main September 29, 2002 Rockets To Open Camp Without Yao Negotiations Will Not Begin Until Asian Games Are Completed The Chinese government is proving that the only thing it does better than suppress the freedom of its citizens is complicate the lives of its professional athletes. Determined to prevent a repeat of the Wang Zhizhi situation (Wang opted to spend his summer improving his game by playing with American hoopsters rather than playing with the Chinese national team), the State General Administration of Sports has opted out of negotiations with the Rockets until the Asian Games run their course on October 14, thereby making David Falk look reasonable. The reason for the delay? Wounded pride. Determined to avoid a repeat of their 12th place finish at the recently concluded World Championships, Chinese officials are clinging to Yao the way that a parasite clings to its host. By depriving Yao of the opportunity to practice with the Rockets and learn from Rudy T, one of the best teachers in all of basketball, so that he can lead the Chinese team to victories over the likes of Kuwait , Mongolia, and Uzbekistan, the Chinese government is displaying its intransigence and shortsightedness.

Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Wang Zhizhi to Be Honored on Postage Stamps Wang Zhizhi of the Dallas Mavericks , the first Chinese player in the National Basketball Association (NBA), will be honored with a set of legal tender stamps that will be unveiled for the first time in New York on Thursday, it was announced by the NBA and the Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation (IGPC) today. This tribute to Wang is part of the Legends of Sports postage stamp series issued by the government of Liberia and produced by IGPC, the world's largest postal agency that represents more than 70 countries and regions in the world. In recognition of his contributions to the sport of basketball and as China's first NBA player, Wang will be immortalized on a commemorative series of postage stamps that are legal tender and valid for postage globally. "It is indeed a great honor," said Wang, "Not everyone is privileged to have a stamp made for them." Liberia has a long tradition of issuing postage stamps to honor the achievements of major international athletes such as Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, Pele, Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson and George Foreman. Wang, one of China's all-time greatest basketball players, became the first player from China to play in the NBA when he joined the Dallas Mavericks in April 2001. He was selected by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft with the 38th pick.

The first Asian star in the NBA?
S INCE HIS FATHER (WANG Weijun, 1.96 m tall [6 ft 5 in]) and mother (Ren Huanzhen, 1.86 m [6 ft 1 in]) were both basketball players, it was perhaps only natural for Chinese star Wang Zhizhi to forge a career in lay-ups and slam-dunks. At 2.16 m (7 ft 1 in), Wang plays for the Bayi Rockets in China's Hilton League and is widely regarded as Asia's best shot at the NBA. He spoke to Asiaweek Contributor Anne Naham about his chances, the Chinese national team and his favorite player (it isn't Michael Jordan). How do you feel about this NBA attention? Nervous, yet not nervous. I am confident about my basketball abilities. I know I can be a good player, but I am still a bit uncertain about it all, of course. What do you think are your chances of going to the U.S.?

Wang's arrival in NBA transcends the sport
By Steve Friess
Special for USA TODAY BEIJING He's a basketball player, so he's supposed to be tall. But when 7-foot Wang Zhizhi strides through a Beijing restaurant en route to a private karaoke lounge to conduct an interview, it's hard not to be stunned by how close his head comes to the ceiling. The Chinese gape because Wang, 23, is one of the most famous basketball players in China. American tourists stare, too, wondering who the giant might be. They'll likely find out soon enough. Wang is in the final stages of securing a release from the top military basketball team in China to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, which could occur as early as Thursday. He's likely to be followed this year or next by 7-6 center Yao Ming, 20, as the first two Asian players in the NBA. Both already have endorsement contracts with Nike and are receiving either representation or advice from Bill Duffy Associates, a San Francisco-based basketball talent agency.
