Wang Zhizhi Bridges Chinese Basketball with World
It is a year of ecstasy to the Chinese basketball fans. After a prolonged longing for the world elite basketball league, the American National Basketball Association (NBA), China's talent Wang Zhizhi wrapped up the Odyssey of joining the Dallas Mavericks team to become the first Asian player in NBA. Wang's step has the significance of a milestone of Chinese basketball, and his occidental trip opened the door to the world for his peers in the domestic league.

The 25-year-old center had his dream come true in April when he joined the Mavericks for the 2000-01 season play-off, before he put his full commitment to the American club this season in November.

  • But the 2.15-meter sensation, a Chinese Army lieutenant colonel, did have a hard time to wait for the his military seniors and the Chinese basketball officials to let him go.

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) announced its decision September 9 afternoon to expel its former member Wang Zhizhi out of the national men's basketball team.
According to agreements between CBA and Dallas Mavericks, Wang should serve the need of national team by returning to China and preparing for international matches after finishing NBA games in America in last May.
But Wang, after receiving CBA's notice demanding him to return home and join in training for the World Championships and the Asian Games, stayed in America under the excuse of personal need and training for NBA summer leagues, and further cut off contacts with CBA. After the leagues finished Wang refused to meet people from CBA and made clear his hope to say in NBA instead of returning to China, CBA's announcement said.
During a period as long as five months, China's team made many efforts in a hope to change Wang's mind, and publicly promised that Wang could continue its NBA training after the World Championships and the Asian Games as well as made corresponding preparations for him.

It is a sword that can ordain basketball all-stars, myths and even legends. But for the 23-year-old Chinese giant, this process will need time. For instance, take note of the path taken by future Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon of the Toronto Raptors, who is the first player from Nigeria to strap on sneakers in the NBA. After a successful collegiate career with the Houston Cougars, Olajuwon became the first overall pick in the NBA by the Houston Rockets. What separated Olajuwon from the rest of the centers was his unique game. He could challenge you in the post, trip your feet with a cross-over dribble, or step back to rain in 15-foot jumpers.

Unexpected Results in Asian Games Wang Zhizhi Sacked by National Men's Basketball Team The China Basketball Association recently announced its decision to dismiss basketball player Wang Zhizhi from the national team. According to the association, Wang defied discipline, lapsed in professional morals and flouted national interests by refusing to return to China and perform his duty as specified in the contract between his team and the Dallas Mavericks. The association did, however, confirm that it would give Wang the opportunity to correct his mistakes, as long as he genuinely repents and takes appropriate action immediately. Other members of the national team expressed no sympathy for Wang. They believe he deserves this punishment for flouting Chinese athletes' glorious tradition of putting the interests and honor of their nation above all else.

Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Wang Zhizhi to Join Dallas Mavericks Chinese giant center Wang Zhizhi will become the first Asian and first army officer to join Dallas Mavericks, his military-owned club Bayi Rockets and Chinese Basketball Management Center (CBMC) announced Thursday. "This is more than just a basketball player going into the NBA," Mavericks' assistant coach Donnie Nelson said in the press conference of the day. "In my opinion, Wang Zhizhi is a synonymous representative of the spirit of China." Nelson said Wang, 2.13 meters, who was picked by Mavericks at 36th in the second round in 1999, would have a universal contract as any second-round picked player has. According to the collective bargain agreement, Wang will have the lowest-salary two-year contract with US$300,000 in the first year, and more than US$420,000 in the next year. The 23-year-old Wang might play as No.16 in his first NBA game as early as on April 5 when the Mavericks face Atlanta Hawks at home, Nelson said. He is likely to play a backup to forward Dirk Nowitzki. After two years of long and hard negotiation with Bayi and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China, Mavericks finally ironed things straight for Wang, whose military rank is Fu Tuan, or Lieutenant in the US army.
