What's New Detroit basketball standout Hairston a Duck 06:43 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 Associated Press DETROIT High school standout Malik Hairston said Wednesday he has decided to play college basketball at Oregon. Malik Hairston. (hoopmasters.com) The 6-foot-6 Detroit Renaissance star said everything fits with him at Oregon, except for the distance from Michigan. The guard/forward last season helped his team to a 27-0 record and the state Class B championship. "The opportunity to play right away would be a big factor," Hairston told reporters. "But also just the coach (Ernie Kent), the coach is who I want to play for, I mean, that's actually the most important thing." Oregon basketball spokesman Greg Walker said the school hadn't received word of Hairston's decision. "We haven't received anything official that would be his national letter of intent," Walker said. "And until we get that, I really can't comment." Hairston considered schools including Ohio State, Kansas, Oregon, Oklahoma, UCLA and Michigan. He played at Detroit Renaissance alongside another top recruit, Joe Crawford, who committed to Kentucky.

TIGERS SAY GOODBYE TO WALKER
Lee Walker Tigers' Head Coach Paul James had to break the disappointing news to Lee Walker that the club would not be renewing his contract for next season. Lee Walker, a firm favourite with team-mates and fans at the Pit will be missed next season. Welsh-born Walker has had two stints with the Tigers separated by a season with Birmingham Bullets. Since coming back this season Lee has played 15 games in all competitions, due to injuries sustained on court. He successfully recovered from a fractured metatarsal in his first season (2000/01) back and was re-signed at the start of the 2001/02 campaign, until picking up an ACL injury on court in November which kept him out for the rest of the season. Lee averaged 7 points per game and has made a valuable contribution to the team, which at the time was top of the conference. James commented, "Lee is a good player, it has just been unfortunate that he has picked up two freak injuries, that have prevented him from showing what he can do. It's tough making this kind of decision, but the club has to do what they think is best. I'm sure he will be picked up now the basketball world knows he is available. You never know, he might be lining up against us next season." ALP, the Management Team for the TV Tigers and Bracknell Bees would like to wish him the very best in future plans.
