Team Canada White Wins Bronze
Ottawa - Team Canada Red rolled to a 55-49 victory over the hometown favourite Team USA to claim the Gold Medal at the 2nd Annual Walker Cup International Wheelchair Basketball Challenge. Canada sent two teams down to the Walker Cup Challenge - Team Canada Red and Team Canada White. The competition was held at Minges Coliseum on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina from May 28th - June 2nd, 2001. In the Gold medal game, Team USA defended its Walker Cup Championship Title against Canada Red. After a hard-fought battle, Canada Red defeated USA by a score of 55 to 49. Tracey Ferguson and Lori Radke led Canada Red to the victory scoring 18 points each, while Christina Ripp and Josie Johnson led USA by scoring 20 and 13 points respectively. The Bronze medal game featured Team Canada White facing-off against last year's Silver medallist, Team Japan. In a close match-up, Canada White defeated Japan by a score of 49 to 44, to capture the Bronze medal. Chantal Benoit scored an impressive 22 points for Canada White, while Chika Uemura, Megumi Mashiko, and Mika Takabayashi mounted a balanced attack for Japan scoring 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.

Marlintini's Arctic Lights won 104-82. BRIAN WALLACE/ THE JUNEAU EMPIRE Juneau's Marlintini's Arctic Lights were the shining stars of the 58th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament's A Bracket, claiming their second championship in three years with a 104-82 victory over Sitka ANB/ANS on Saturday. The Arctic Lights used a quick start by Jason Bavard to grab an early lead, then used their size and speed to dominate the game at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym. Marlintini's also had several former college players, while many on Sitka's squad were only a few years out of high school. "It definitely makes a difference," B Bracket MVP Josh Lockhart said of the Arctic Lights' experience. "We had size and scoring ability, and we got Jon. It definitely makes it difficult." Bavard scored 10 of the Arctic Lights' first 12 points, giving his team a 12-4 lead. After that jump-start, former Biola University player Lockhart and former University of Alaska Anchorage players Jon Madison and Shaun O'Shea took over. The Arctic Lights led 63-36 at halftime and Sitka never got closer than 22 points the rest of the way.

Shackleton's Voyage
Just finished watching the NOVA documentary on Ernest Shackleton's 1914 voyage to cross the Antarctic . Truly incredible story of human endurance and will. They never crossed the Antarctic, but got caught in the ice and spent the better part of two years stuck in an ice flow, including 4 months in complete darkness. Heroic efforts of many people led them to rescue, living on the ice and eventually taking an 800 mile journey in a lifeboat across the icey seas, only to be followed by a trek across the glacial hills of South Georgia on foot to reach a whaling station. Not one of the men died.
The documentary is stunning, also, for the volume of actual movies and still photos from their journey that have survived. The faces of the men in such desparate straights will haunt me for some time.
