... Better Service Request By Danielle Mincey, Ph.D Slave Trading in the 21st Century Dikembe Mutombo Obinna Ekezie Toni Kukoc Zan Tabak Part One FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA ESPN recently aired an expose about international students who are being imported to the United States by high schools for the purposes of building successful basketball programs. The allegations of recruiting violations made against the International Student Exchange Company are similar in principle to indentured servitude and slavery once used to meet workforce needs in the early days of this country. Eastern European students and African students were the two groups featured in the expose. The eastern European students appeared to have been recruited from war-torn countries, such as, Yugoslavia. African students appeared to have been recruited from across the continent but primarily from the lower socioeconomic class of their countries.

pacers 103, nuggets 94 Denver's road woes continue By Tom Kensler
Denver Post Sports Writer Feb. 3, 2001
- INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana knows Best. But the Denver Nuggets had trouble locating him in crunch time Friday night. That's Travis Best, a 5-foot-11 reserve guard and, at best, only the third option in the Pacers' perimeter attack, who nailed three jump shots in the final 2:48 as Indiana crunched the Nuggets 103-94 at Conseco Fieldhouse. Of course, Reggie Miller, with a gamehigh 27 points, and Jalen Rose, with 26, did their outside thing for the Pacers, who aren't going to beat you in the paint. At times, it appeared that Miller, Rose and Best took turns flinging away - without so much as a hand in their face. In the last 4 minutes and with the game hanging in balance, the Pacers took control with a 9-1 run that included two uncontested jumpers by Best and a 3-pointer by Miller. That put Indiana up 96-85 with 1:08 remaining. A 3-pointer by Best from the top of the key with 38.2 seconds to play made it 99-88 and ended any chance of a Nuggets miracle. "We trusted our offense at the end," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. How could the Nuggets allow Indiana's best shooters to get so open? Everybody in the crowd of 18,345 knew which Pacers players would take the big shots.

July 27, 1998 by Peter May
You can count Zan Tabak among the few who can kick back and enjoy the rest of his summer. At least he knows where and when he'll be playing basketball this fall. Not many other NBA free agents can make the same claim. Tabak accepted a lucrative, two-year offer from the Turkish team Fenerbahce, choosing the Istanbul-based club over the uncertainty of NBA free agency, the uncertainty of when the league might reopen for business, and the-uncertainty of whether his former team, the Celtics, even wanted him back. Measured against all those uncertainties, it was an easy call. But is this a sign of things to come, or is Tabak's situation unique because of his Eastern European background and overseas resume? The consensus seems to be the latter Where once Europe was an attractive alternative to even midlevel NBA free agentsremember a then-valuable Danny Ferry bolting the Clippers to play in Rome in 1989?it no longer is because the money isn't as good and the number of teams willing to pay big bucks are getting fewer and fewer.

The Spring of Competitiveness Kresimir Cosic, whose memory lives so vividly at the Croatian Embassy in Washington where he served until his early death as Minister Counselor, was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1996. This event reaffirmed his stature as one of Europe's best players, his skills being so finely developed to attract serious offers from several NBA teams. Beside Kresimir Cosic, there are other members of the Hall of Fame that Croatia claims as its own, including George Mikan and "Pistol" Pete Maravich who were of Croatian origin, as are probable future Hall-of-Famers, former player and Houston Rockets' coach and two times NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich and Boston Celtics' great, Kevin McHalle. Beside basketball, Croatians star in other sports popular in the United States. Prominent Croatian athletes include Stanley Cup winner and MVP Joe Sakic from the Colorado Avalanche, NFL quarterback Elvis Grbac from the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers' Tony Mandarich, and Chicago Bears' Chris Zorich, just to name the few. America's favorite pastime, baseball, also witnessed a significant contribution to its success by players that have their roots in Croatia. The Cleveland Indians had an outstanding pitcher in Al Milnar, Roger Maris became famous for his home runs, etc. Some of the players that came from Croatia'or their ancestors'changed their names upon arriving, adjusting them to English language spelling. That is the reason that some of them were not known to the wider audience as Croats or as of Croatian decent, but stories about them and their successes live among the Croatian American community.

Basketball nightmare for Croatia
By Dan Sewell, Associated Press writer
ATLANTA Don't cry for Argentina. Or at least, save some tears for Croatia.
The 1992 men's basketball silver medalists' hopes for a medal could be hurting, like Toni Kukoc's broken left thumb, after their first game of the Olympics today.
Thanks to some bad luck in the blind draw, Croatia faces a tough Lithuania team and was thrown into the same pool with the Dream Team, which loosens up tonight against Argentina.
Croatia's test comes less than two weeks after their best player fractured the top of his left, shooting thumb in an exhibition game.
"How important is Toni to us? That's like asking what Michael Jordan brings to the Chicago Bulls," said Croatia's Dino Radja, who plays forward for the Boston Celtics.
Kukoc charged out onto the Morehouse College court for practice yesterday afternoon and effortlessly swished his first shot from the top of the three-point circle. But as the workout proceeded, he at times appeared to have trouble receiving passes.
"So-so. If I play, I play," Kukoc said, thumb buried in a cup of ice after practice. "We'll see tomorrow."

Sacramento, USA, March 26 (AP)
- Vlade Divac and Predrag Stojakovic of the Sacramento Kings lead a group of NBA players who will hold a basketball camp this summer for children from the former Yugoslavia. Divac and Stojakovic will be in Treviso, Italy, from June 29-July 2 to instruct players from 12-14 years of age. They will be joined by Atlanta's Toni Kukoc and six other NBA players from the former Yugoslav republics in "Basketball Without Borders," which also will include seminars on education and drug abuse. "It's going to be a nice thing for kids who sometimes don't get a chance to enjoy basketball the same way kids in America do," Divac said. The event is co-sponsored by the NBA, the United Nations Drug Control Program, Benetton Treviso and FIBA, the governing body of international basketball.
Toni Kukoc
Kukoc, who played for Benetton Treviso before joining the NBA, Divac and Stojakovic will be joined by Bruno Sundov and Zan Tabak of the Indiana Pacers, Aleksandar Radojevic of the Denver Nuggets, Radislav Nesterovic of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Dalibor Bagaric and Dragan Tarlac of the Chicago Bulls. The event will reunite children from Yugoslavia's former republics, which gained independence over the past decade after ethnic wars. Fifty children will be the guests of Benetton Treviso at the Italian League team's facilities north of Venice. Ten children will be chosen by each of the national basketball federations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, which consists of Serbia and Montenegro.
