F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! CATEGORY AVG PER GAME STND DEV STND DEV/AVG Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Treys Free Throws FG% In the same manner the fantasy stiffs can be identified. Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.

History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

For the Times
When Ryan Smith was playing basketball for the Frankford Salvation Army summer team after his freshman year, he had no idea what kind of impact it would have on the rest of his high school career.
During that season, he met with his coach, Howard Griffith, who told Smith, then a member of the George Washington High School junior varsity team, that a transfer to Frankford High School could be a positive move.
Griffith and Smith were exactly right.
An honor student, Smith has enrolled in the Math and Science Upward Bound Program at Temple University, a program that offers challenging math and science curriculum to advanced students. The courses have been demanding, yet rewarding, for Smith.
Smith also has a great relationship with Frankford head coach Bernie Handler.
Handler, who has guided his team to the playoffs every year in his five seasons, has helped Smith, and vice versa.
The respect is mutual.

Seventh Season
Jay Smith continues to take the Chippewas to new heights as he enters his seventh season at the helm of the Central Michigan University basketball program. Last year’s squad raised the bar as high as it has ever been in Mount Pleasant, posting a school-record 25 wins and winning the MAC tournament and an NCAA tournament first-round game. The Chippewas also captured their second regular season conference title in the last three years, and Smith was tabbed MAC “Coach of the Year” for the second time after earning the honor when CMU won the regular season in 2001. The Chippewas’ memorable season continued into the summer as seven-foot center Chris Kaman entered the NBA following his junior season and became the highest draft pick in CMU history when the Los Angeles Clippers selected him sixth overall. Central Michigan University’s success over the past three seasons did not come easily.

PROVO, Utah (Nov. 5, 2002) BYU overcame an early first-half deficit and withheld a late surge to beat EA Sports Southwest All-Stars 89-84 in an exhibition game Tuesday night at the Marriott Center.
EA Sports jumped out to 10-0 lead as former Colorado State center Joe Vogel and former University of Utah guard Tony Harvey got the All-Stars running from the tip in a very fast-paced first half.
Following a BYU timeout, Travis Hansen hit a jumper and a Kevin Woodberry steal and breakaway jam gave the Cougars momentum. Woodberry then drained two three-pointers to draw the Cougars to within six.
"Our match-ups were really bad at the beginning which is the reason why we got off to a bad start," Cleveland said. "Being an exhibition game, I wanted to let them play for a while before making any changes."

Hot racial issue cooled long before Smith was hired
By C. Ray Hall
chall@courier-journal.com

The Courier-Journal Tubby Smith
When the University of Kentucky named its new basketball coach on May 12, 1997, it was inviting to look for symbols. UK basketball, long seen as an outpost of athletic apartheid, now rested in the hands of Orlando ''Tubby'' Smith. A black man. ''To me, race is a non-issue,'' declared C. M. Newton, the athletic director. ''He is the only person who came to my mind who would be a candidate for this job.'' No one spoke of race, except to say that it didn't matter. But a gesture of racial healing spoke more than words. S. T. Roach, an 81-year-old black man, put Smith's name into nomination before the UK athletics association board of directors. For a quarter century Roach coached with distinction at Lexington's Dunbar High School. For most of his life the idea of a black man playing at UK much less coaching there had been an impossible dream.
