Like Jordan, James wears No. 23 and has the Madison Avenue marketing gurus clamoring over his services. Like Jordan, James has become a national pitchman for several products that cross all color barriers, including Nike and Sprite. Like Jordan, James is a fierce competitor who hates to lose at anything, especially basketball. And like Jordan, James has an extremely high basketball IQ.
And like so many before him, James is expected to pick up the torch left by Jordan's retirement and help carry the NBA for at least the next 15 years. High expectations, indeed, for an 18-year-old kid. Ticketmaster
"It's a little early to tell whether he'll be like Mike," Cavs coach Paul Silas said. "Right now, like Mike, his shooting is not what it will be in the future.
"But LeBron has a great sense of the game, he understands how to play, and the main thing that I look for is his basketball intelligence, and he has that. So, there isn't any doubt in my mind that he has a chance to be a very special player. But it's going to take some time, because it's a tough league."

SportsLine.com wire reports CLEVELAND Like any NBA rookie, LeBron James must go through some hazing. There are bags to carry and doughnuts to buy for the Cavaliers ' veterans. Advertisement "Krispy Kremes," James said following his first practice as a pro. "Before every game." But with more than $100 million in endorsement deals, James is no ordinary rookie, which is why his teammates joked that he should bring one of the famous doughnut franchises to them. "They told me to build one in the locker room," he said. James reported for his first day of work Tuesday as the Cavaliers opened training camp to prepare for a season that promises to be unlike any in their history. They've already had one abnormal practice. Several dozen media members were on hand at Gund Arena to watch James, the former Akron high school superstar and No. 1 overall draft pick, work out with his new team. The throng of reporters, local and national TV camera crews was larger than any to attend one of Cleveland's home games in recent memory. No surprise, really.

CLEVELAND This had all the makings of just another college football commercial, about the never-ending Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. It just happened to be in the food court of Tower City, also known as the Gateway to Gund Arena and Jacobs Field. As the guy in the Michigan hat and his buddy in the scarlet Ohio State sweater dove into a massive pile of curly fries, they certainly agreed on one particular issue the future of their NBA team, the Cleveland Cavaliers and rookie sensation LeBron James LeBron James' ball-handling duties have been cut back so he can focus on the rest of his game. (Getty Images) "Can you believe how many more people are here before a Cavs game than there used to be?" the guy from Michigan said, looking at the hordes of people presumably eating a pregame meal. "It's like it used to be before Indians (baseball) games." "Hey man," the Buckeye retorted, "this is only the start. And that's the best part."

Analyzing LeBron
By Kevin Pelton

The traveling circus that is LeBron James and the 2003-04 Cleveland Cavaliers made its stop in Seattle earlier this week. Your humble Hoopsworld columnist not only had a front-row seat, he was part of the sideshow involving a pack of media out for blood (but willing to settle for a couple of good sound bytes). I can't really discuss the James phenomenon without separating the on-court phenomenon from the madness off the court, so I will take each separately.
On the Court
The two plays that stand out for me in LeBron James' Seattle debut, a 104-96 victory for the Cleveland Cavaliers, were not monstrous dunks. They were not no-look passes or crossover dribbles. They were simply fundamental basketball plays, executed with the kind of skill and basketball acumen that few players, let alone 19-year-olds, possess. The first play came inside the final minute of the first half. After Sonics forward Vladimir Radmanovic grabbed a rebound, he headed the other way on a three-on-one fast break. The lone player back, James read Radmanovic like a poker champion, following his eyes to the right and leaping into the air to easily secure the ball once it left Radmanovic's hand and turn back the Sonics. The other play came in a more important situation. With 1:04 to play, the Sonics had closed within six points after two Brent Barry free throws. James' first attempt, a turnaround from the post, was off, but he was right there for the rebound and the putback to put essentially seal the game for the Cavs.

By Richard Walker Gazette Sports Reporter The Baltimore Ravens are overwhelming Super Bowl favorites of Charlotte Hornets players. And one Hornets player has more than just a passing interest in Baltimore’s fate. Charlotte forward Tim James, on the injured list the past 12 games, is related to Ravens’ defensive back Duane Starks. "We’re cousins," said James. "We’ve been playing against each other since we were little kids. But ever since college, I’ve always been rooting for him." James attended Northwestern High and Starks Miami Beach High before they both went to the University of Miami. While both were spectacular athletes, they only competed against each other in one sport: track. "We went head-to-head in the high jump and a couple of running events," James said. At Miami, Starks often watched James’ basketball games, while James watched Starks’ football games. However, James has never seen his cousin play in person professionally.

CLEVELAND - In a season of amazing achievement, LeBron James reached a new high. Put simply, he played his finest game when his team needed it the most. If the Cleveland Cavaliers go on to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1997, many will point to this performance as the reason why.
Breaking out of a personal slump, James took over in the fourth quarter Saturday night and carried a team that had forgotten how to win, willing the Cavs past the New Jersey Nets 107-104.
"I had to turn it to another gear," James said after producing 41 points and 13 assists.
How dominant was the rookie's performance against the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions?
_He scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including the Cavaliers' final 10.
_He either scored or assisted on all but eight of Cleveland's 32 points in the fourth quarter.
_He scored six points in the final 39 seconds, snatching a victory after the Cavaliers trailed nearly the entire game.
The win ended a four-game losing streak for Cleveland (32-40) and tied it with Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, heading into the Celtics' game Sunday against the 76ers.

Cleveland basketball needs more than LeBron
LeBron James may mean a new era for basketball, and certainly for the Cavs. But Cleveland's got more problems than one star athlete can solve. Posted on June 14, 2003 03:16 PM

[send email] Last month's NBA draft lottery may be irrefutable evidence that the whole thing isn't a shameless patchwork of winks, nudges and bent corners on envelopes designed to funnel the right players into the right pockets. The Cleveland Cavaliers winning the lottery in any other year with any other Kenyon Martin or Kwame Brown waiting at the end of the rainbow wouldn't be convincing enough. But this is the year of LeBron James.

LITR 4332: American Minority Literature Sample Student Paper, fall 2000 James David Jones Litr 4332 Fall 2000 Dr. C. White "We Have Borne Everything Patiently for This Long Time" The title of this essay comes from a speech given by the great Amerind leader Joseph Brant. It is a fitting introduction because no other minority in American history has faced the question of assimilation versus resistance for as long a period of time, and with as much at stake, as the American Indian. From first contact with whites in 1493, to the modern reservation, the Amerind has fought a battle against white encroachment on tribal lands, disease, alcoholism, and a general lack of concern from the dominant white society. It is estimated that there may have been as many as 80 million Indians in The New World at the time of discovery, and that as a result of war, diseases (the Europeans brought smallpox and other diseases with them) and mistreatment almost 40 million had died by the mid 16 th century (Rosenstiel, Red and White The two works are in essence a collection of short stories. They contain vignettes of life, some based on historical events, which give insight into the Amerind culture. On The Rez, published in 2000, gives the account of the Oglala Sioux living on the Pine Ridge Reservation and their survival in the modern world while trying to retain their dignified culture. "Fistfight" is a work written in 1993 about life on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and deals with many of the same issues as "On The Rez". These two texts explore the issue of assimilation versus resistance for the modern Amerind, and the challenge to survive in a modern society without losing their cultural identity.

Can 'King James' keep his crown?

June 23, 2003
High school basketball phenom Lebron James will be chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first selection of the NBA draft on Tuesday, a mere formality for the 18-year-old. In the past month, he has been the focus of shows on MTV and HBO and has been on ESPN almost daily since he challenged the NBA last year to enter the draft as a high school junior. Most pundits believed James would also have been a lock for the No. 1 pick last year, ahead of 7' 5" Yao Ming and Rookie of the Year Amare Stoudemire. The Cavaliers (and the NBA) have done everything but rename Cleveland's Gund Arena after James. A native of Akron, Ohio, James will be a big boost for the franchise, mainly in terms of season ticket sales and promotional deals. Cleveland also hired veteran head coach and former All-Star Paul Silas to play the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi to James' Skywalker talents. Getting Silas is a coup in itself. After four-plus seasons as the steward of the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Silas marked himself as the crutch of the franchise. Not only did Silas lead the Hornets to the playoffs four times in those four years, he kept the team's morale positive after the shocking death of Bobby Phills in January of 2000 as well as keeping them focused during the transition to the Big Easy.

CLEVELAND Look up in the sky, above the gray sheath of clouds from whence the lake-effect snow comes. The air way up there. That's where the expectations for LeBron James were. Even by modern American standards, even in a breathy society that inhales and exhales hype-hype-hyperbole, the pressures applied to this teen-ager seemed somewhere between stratospheric and spacial. And he flew past them. Ask the biggest guy in town, 7-foot-3 Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Ask the kid's coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Paul Silas. Ask NBA commissioner David Stern. Ask opponents, scouts, anyone from A to the center called Z, and they'll repeat a phrase unprecedented in this age of pumped-up volumes and trumped-up images. He has exceeded expectations No one is ready to crown him the next Michael Jordan, mind you. But this kid is only 50 games into his professional career, this kid is only 19 years and 47 days old. Already, he has become the youngest in league history to surpass 1,000 points, breaking that plateau on the same night (Monday) as buddy Carmelo Anthony, who is about six months older. Already, his presence on NBA floors, in NBA stands, at NBA ticket windows, in NBA ratings, in NBA merchandising, in NBA everythings has not only rocked Cleveland but also the basketball planet.
