Cavaliers’ LeBron James Added to 2004 USA Basketball Men’s
Senior National Team
CLEVELAND, May 14 – Cavaliers guard LeBron James has accepted an invitation from USA Basketball to join the 2004 USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team that will compete in the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. James, the 2004 got milk? NBA Rookie of the Year, is the first player to be named to the USA Olympic team as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will also become the NBA’s first rookie and youngest player to join the national team since professional players started competing at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. “I am honored to be invited to participate on the U.S. Olympic team. It’s a dream come true for me to represent my country,” stated James, who will be 19-years, seven months and 13 days old when the ‘04 Olympics open on Aug.13 making him the youngest USA male basketball player to participate in the Olympics since Spencer Haywood in 1968 (Haywood was 19 years, five months and 26 days old at the start of the '68 games). “I look forward to joining my fellow Americans and competing against the best basketball players in the world. I am excited to have the opportunity to play for Larry Brown and his staff. I have great respect for coach Brown, and we have an Akron, Ohio connection.”

Cavaliers guard LeBron James, left, was fouled by Suns guard Stephon Marbury in the 95-86 win by Phoenix. photo by Paul Connors, AP (Oct. 31, 2003) *A lot of pressure has been put on rookie LeBron James to bring the world back to the game of basketball. Well, he's doing his job, but one man is not a team. He broke out of the gate Wednesday night in his debut to the NBA with 25 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals. It has been reported that none of the other high school to NBA stars such as: Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire, Jermaine O'Neal, or Tracy McGrady came close to that. At 18, this young man is really bringing it to the NBA. But, despite his fantastic show, the Cavaliers still lost to the Sacramento Kings, 106-92 Tuesday night and and also lost last night to Phoenix 95-86. But you have to lose a few to win the important games. The Cavs game appeared to be strong by chopping a 19-point deficit down and pulling ahead by 2 points in the fourth quarter. It was a defeat that gave a glimpse into a potentially prosperous future. Although James points were impressive to many, his numbers left him unsatisfied. When asked if he exceeded his opening expectations, he said, "I try not to think about that with a loss."

James, Cavaliers ready to roll 26 Sep, 2003 19:15 AP In a few days, LeBron James will start his first real job. In a few days, LeBron James will start his first real job. After a summer spent vacationing in Hawaii, attending the MTV awards in New York, the ESPYs in Los Angeles and filming TV commercials with Spike Lee and for Nike, it's almost time for Cleveland's hyped rookie to begin work. "Come Tuesday," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said in his Gund Arena office Friday. "He's mine." For the first time in years, the Cavaliers opening training camp is big news. They can thank James for that. The Akron high school superstar will move a step closer to the official start of his NBA career when the Cavaliers hold their first practice on Tuesday at the Gund. Because of the attention on James, the club is bracing for a huge media contingent during the first week of two-a-day workouts. Silas can't wait to get started. "This is so exciting," he said. "For me, for the city, for everybody. Let's get going." But even before holding his first practice, Silas has already changed his mind on starting the season with the 6-foot-8 James as his point guard. Silas toyed with the idea of using James at the point during summer league games. But after seeing opponents overplay James to his right, forcing him to use his left hand, and knowing everything else that James will have to handle in his first season as a pro, Silas has changed his mind.

James shows maturity in preseason debut

Dealing with the media horde hasn't done anything to derail LeBron James. Nathaniel S. Butler/Getty Images AUBURN HILLS, Mich. He got booed during introductions, knocked to the floor by Ben Wallace , and told to tuck in his jersey by Joey Crawford . He even got heckled for his Hummer. Cavs forward LeBron James didn't exactly dominate in his NBA exhibition debut Tuesday night. He scored eight points (on 4-of-12 shooting) in 26 minutes of his team's otherwise meaningless preseason opener against the Pistons. But the rookie played a solid game, didn't try to do too much and dished out seven assists, a few of the dazzling variety, to earn a more than passing grade. "It was a lot of fun," said James, admitting that he felt some butterflies when he first took the floor. "But once the game started I got into the flow. Everything calmed down, and I got back to reality." With 20,862 fans seemingly watching his every move, James played it cool throughout the evening. He didn't force shots. He passed to open teammates. He defended.

NBA Basketball Analysis
By Sam Amico / The Amico Report CAVS’ MILES OF FUN
Random thoughts from the Cavaliers-Sonics game Jan. 13 in Seattle:
So why do I like Miles? Because when motivated, he is supremely athletic, soaring through the air to block shots and dunk with the greatest of ease. That’s what happened in Seattle, as Miles was everything you could hope for in a finisher of the fast break. He beat everyone down the floor, received good passes from the likes of LeBron James, and it was “Wham, with the right hand!” as longtime Cavs radio play-by-play announcer Joe Tait likes to say.
Still, while Miles spent a lot of time working on his shot during the off season, Cavs coach Paul Silas has to cringe every time he shoots from beyond 12 feet. Besides rookie forward Jason Kapono (a defensive liability), Cleveland has no consistent perimeter shooters and I mean NONE. Basically, the Cavs still need to make major changes if they hope to get to the playoffs anytime soon. The bottom line for this team is James needs a reliable running mate. There have been persistent rumors of a Cleveland-Dallas trade that would send center Zydrunas Ilgauskus to the Mavericks for forward Antawn Jamison. My thought: Do it, Cavs!

LeBron James Interview Chicago Pre-draft camp media conference
LeBron James is expected to be the top pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He spoke to the media at the Chicago pre-draft camp during the June 7-8 interview sessions.
Q: How much have you talked to Jim Paxson and what are your impressions at this point?
LeBron James: I haven’t talked to him very much, but he when I talked to him, he sounded like a really good guy. I am hoping to build a relationship because I think as a player, it is good to build a relationship with the front office and try to carry that out onto the floor. And that is what I am going to try to do.
Q: Have you met with Coach Silas yet?

Stretching to 6 feet 7 inches, this boy grew to be the man known as Paul Silas. Legendary in Creighton basketball for his 20.6 rebound average in 1963, his NCAA record for the most rebounds in three seasons and 38 rebounds alone in a 1962 game, Silas was inducted into the Creighton University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1974. He went on to the NBA for a 16-year career that included three championships and two All-Star titles. Silas played for the Boston Celtics, the Denver Nuggets and the Seattle Supersonics during that span. Now he is the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers after five seasons with the Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets.
Basketball has come a long way since Silas played in junior high school, college and even the pros.
Coaches concentrate on various aspects of both offense and defense, instead of leaning toward offense.
Silas agrees with Deren, classifying himself with most basketball players, coaches and enthusiasts.

James still has a lot to learn
By Peter May, Globe Staff, 1/10/2004 He won't be back here until next season. LeBron James made his final swing through Boston of the 2003-04 season last night and it was a game and an evening the Cleveland Cavaliers' prodigy will quickly soon forget. His team got hammered, 107-82. He played so listlessly that his coach kept him on the floor until the final buzzer, along with all the scrubs, because James "was part of the problem." ADVERTISEMENT James finished with 19 points, but that number was incidental. A more fitting number to calculate what he meant to last night's game is 18,624, the number of patrons who ventured out on a night that Bud Grant wouldn't even like and made it to the FleetCenter. Eric Williams didn't bring them out. Darius Miles didn't bring them out. J.R. Bremer didn't bring them out. "He's the next big thing," Williams said of James. "He deserves it because of the way he plays, the fact that he understands the game, and he does everything so well." This was Cleveland's 19th road game and 14 of them have been sellouts, including both stops in Boston. That is a statistic unimaginable without James. The Cavaliers have the second-highest road attendance in the league, around 18,800. While hometown Cleveland hasn't been as quick to embrace him only three sellouts, strangely the attendance at Gund Arena still is up dramatically from a league low last year of 11,497 per game to 17,610 this year, 10th best, and an increase of more than 53 percent.

By Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff, 12/14/2003 CLEVELAND LeBron James is keeping his situation in perspective. The rookie phenom scored a career-high 37 points, but squandered Cleveland's last chance to rally with a turnover in a 105-98 loss to the Celtics last night. ADVERTISEMENT "I'm just being aggressive," James said. "I'm helping my team get better down the stretch. I just got in the groove. When I'm aggressive a lot of things happen for me. As long as I know we played hard, I'm satisfied. You can see we're playing a lot better. We're playing aggressive. We want to be in every game and we did that [last] night." James was asked about his matchup with Paul Pierce , who scored 41 points and clinched the victory by poking away James's dribble in the final seconds. "Someday I'll be a superstar in this league," he said. "To go against a guy like that, who's an All-Star and Olympian, that was fun out there. I love this game." Cavalier coach Paul Silas was encouraged by James's performance.

The expectations for LeBron James are great he may never live up to them. The Cavaliers could double their 17 victories from last season and James could average 15 points, five rebounds and five assists and still find himself being criticized. Make no mistake, though. There is one part of James' game that even the harshest critic will admit is more than ready for the NBA: The kid can pass the ball. That has been clear from the beginning. He made a play in his first preseason game against the Pistons that had everyone talking. The Cavs were on a fast break when Darius Miles slipped the ball to James in the key. Without breaking stride, James made a no-look push pass to Ricky Davis that was converted for a layup. It was a thing of absolute beauty. "I saw Bird and Magic do that," Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson says. "You can't teach that. Can't take credit for that one. That's a gift."

James's Value Shows in Numbers

By Greg Sandoval
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 16, 2004; Page D08 The skeptics predicted doom when the basketball Hall of Fame decided to enshrine LeBron James's high school jersey alongside the likes of Michael Jordan's before he had played a single NBA game, and again when ESPN thrust him before a national audience by televising his high school games, and again when Nike piled $90 million into his teenage hands. Instead, James triumphed in turning around the Cleveland Cavaliers on and off the court, dazzling fans as well as doubters with his play and poise. He guided the club to a 35-47 record, doubling the number of wins from last season (17-65). His numbers (20.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game) made him the third rookie to top 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Oscar Robertson and Jordan are the other two. Since James arrived, the Cavaliers have sold 6,791 more tickets per game, a 59 percent increase, the biggest jump in NBA history. Last year they were last in the league in attendance.
