Notes From A Basketball Junkie
Where HoopHeads Get Their Fix! Main September 26, 2002 A Tale Of Two Cities The Knicks Search For Someone, Anyone, to buy Season Tickets
While Kidd Looks Toward Future As A Net
As if the grim torrent of headlines trumpeting 2-mile wide pollution clouds in Asia, war in the Middle East, and epic draught in America isn't proof enough that Armageddon is fast approaching, than the sudden inverse in the relationship between the Knicks and the Nets should serve as the final warning the Judgment Day is near! It was only a couple of years ago that the Nets were example #2 (the Clippers, of course, being numero uno) of how not to run an NBA franchise. They played in a soulless arena in the hinterlands of New Jersey's swamps before sparse and indifferent crowds. Of course, there was no compelling reason for fans to care or to trek out to the Meadowlands to attend a game, as the Nets often seemed uninterested in what was happening as the few fans were. The only person that seemed to take an active interest in Nets basketball was their emotive and energetic television analyst, Bill Rafferty. It had begun to seem as if the franchise was cursed. The few fleeting moments of success were completely eclipsed by spectacular failures and confounding disasters. Budding stars died tragically, Drazen Petrovic, or suffered debilitating injuries, Jayson Williams. Talented rookies proved to be injury-prone, Sam Bowie, or to have attitude problems, Derrick Coleman. Players acquired via trades or signed as free agents played with utter selfishness, Stephon Marbury, or not at all, Rony Seikaly. A veritable revolving door of coaches did nothing but further the notion that New Jersey was the NBA's version of Siberia, a bleak and hopeless place to toil until your sentence was over and you could move on.

Ode to an NCAA basketball champion
BY CHRISTOPHER YOUNG
WHEN I MOVED TO the area in 1984, one my main reasons for coming here was that Boston seemed to be such a great sports town. In upstate New York, where I grew up, sports fans did not really have a pro team to call their own, since my hometown was nestled equidistant between the two Empire State "metropolises," New York and Buffalo. Central New Yorkers were either Yankees fans or Mets fans; Jets fans, Giants fans, or Bills fans; Rangers fans, Islanders fans, or Sabres fans; and Knicks fans or Nets fans. And as this transplanted New Yorker became accustomed to the fanaticism that is the New England sports aficionado, I slowly lost my allegiances to the New York teams that I grew up loving so much — in my case, the Mets, Rangers, and Knicks (I was an LA Rams fan in football; don’t ask me why). Yet my devotion to one particular New York–based team never wavered. It survived and even thrived despite endless winters of disappointment and heartbreak. The Mets won the World Series in 1986, and I didn’t care. The Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 54 years in 1994, and it hardly mattered a whit. Even the Rams won a Super Bowl in 1999, and it barely registered, because my attentions became focused on the New England teams and the one holdover from my youth: Syracuse University. I didn’t go to Syracuse, but I doubt my fidelity to its sports teams would have been any less rabid if I'd attended the upstate New York school. For Central New Yorkers, Syracuse has always been pretty much the only game in town. No other pantheon of higher learning north of the Big Apple has such a national standing in the primary college sports, and therefore Syracuse University can glean its support from all corners of the state. While universities like Cornell, Colgate, and RPI offer high-profile Division I hockey programs, only Syracuse plays a top-level national schedule in such marquee sports as football, basketball, and lacrosse.

- The envelope, please. And the winners are . . . Hoosiers, that rollicking team from America's heartland with an All-Star cast featuring Steve Alford and Daryl Thomas and introducing basketball's newest sensation, Keith Smart. By the narrowest of margins, The Hoosiers outpolled The Boys from Syracuse to take home college basketball's biggest prize here Monday night. Smart's 16-foot jumper from the left baseline gave Indiana a 74-73 victory over Syracuse in a marvelously played NCAA title game. With the eyes of the nation and all five Syracuse defenders glued to Alford, Smart stole the show in the final 5 minutes. The junior-college transfer from nearby Baton-Rouge scored six of Indiana's final seven baskets.

SU's Silent Center
Bosnian import Elvir Ovcina's silence runs deep
By Skip Murphy
Elvir Ovcina's life has been anything but quiet. Since arriving here, however, the 21-year-old Syracuse University junior has been SU's silent center, steadfastly refusing to talk to the press.
Perhaps it's with good reason. Ovcina, who came to the United States from war-torn Bosnia five years ago, has led at times a difficult life. In high school, media attention made it worse, and apparently made a big impression on young Elvir. To see him and to talk to him, however, one would never suspect he's a candidate to be the Big East's version of Steve Carlton, the Hall of Fame pitcher who disdainfully refused to speak to the media for most of his career. Everyone who knows Elvir describes him as warm, fun-loving, sincere and highly intelligentjust a great kid. In fact, most of them talk about his strength of character before they mention his basketball skillsquite a statement when you consider that his hoops skills give Ovcina his notoriety. Elvir's silence instead seems linked to a combination of shyness and a lingering feeling of being picked on as a foreigner when he was a high-school player in Illinois. It wasn't the only time Elvir was a target. Born on July 16, 1976, in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Elvir is the son of Ismet and Sadeta Ovcina, working-class people with one other son. When he was 16, after a basketball game, Ovcina and 17 other players from the Bosnia-Herzegovina junior national team fled across the border into Turkey under a hail of gunfire. They stayed in a shelter for several months until a Rotary Club in the Chicago area found homes for them in northern Illinois. Ovcina, the tallest and most gifted Bosnian player, was therefore the most visible when resentment against them surfaced.
