    History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

    Bring 'em South Americans
IF THE PBA gets to enlist a tough South American ball club to strut its wares in the forthcoming Fiesta Cup that could spark new interest in the league, well and good. It's been a long time since Filipino basketball fans saw a Latino squad dishing its skills since the days of Oscar Schmidt.
Yup, those were the days when the Brazilian team led by Schmidt, an Olympian, came to our shores and pleased sports fans no end. Before Schmidt, Cyrus Mann brought his talent here by suiting up for Crispa.
"Encouraging" is the word to describe the tireless efforts of PBA commissioner Noli Eala to find a much suitable replacement for the Angolans who, last I heard, withdrew from the Fiesta Cup. It could be a blessing in disguise.
South Americans play tough basketball, tougher than their European counterparts. Their brand of basketball might teach us a few lessons that may be of good use later on. During Schmidt's active playing years in the Pan American Games, the US team always found Brazil a tough nut to crack.
If my recollection is correct, there was a time when the Americans lost the title to their Brazilian counterparts. That was because no NBA superstars were in the regional tournament. The Americans learned a painful lesson.

The skipper finds Sporn and her two points mean the Opals are into a playoff for gold." These are two possible scenarios for Australia's basketball teams in Atlanta. But the Boomers and the Opals will have to be at their peak to position themselves so near the top of their respective competitions. With the groupings for Atlanta now finalised, Australia's men's team has world powers Yugoslavia and Greece in their side of the draw and the USA, Lithuania and Croatia in the other half. In the women's section Australia is grouped with other medal contenders - USA, Ukraine and Cuba. Brazil, China and Russia are the strongest teams in the other group.

Pop quiz: who's the all-time leading scorer in professional basketball? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ? Nope. It's Oscar Schmidt , the Sadaharu Oh of pro hoops. As Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel explains, Schmidt was no stranger to the hoops world - New Jersey drafted him in 1984 and he starred in several Olympics and International tournaments - but the sweet-shooting forward from Brazil decided to ply his trade exclusively on his home turf.
Schmidt's influence has reverberated the last few years as South American stars like Nene Hilario and Manu Ginobili starred in their rookie years, while Brazil's

Former Hoop Executive Editor Jan Hubbard Discusses Some of the Issues Behind Professionals in the Olympics

The original Dream Team receive their gold medals in Barcelona.
    (Andrew D. Bernstein/NBA Photos)
If there is one basketball rule that has consistently befuddled the experts, it is the rule that led to the participation of NBA players in the Olympics. In 1988, the U.S. lost to the Soviet Union in the Olympic semifinal game in Seoul, South Korea, and had to settle for the bronze medal. About eight months later, the rules were changed and NBA players became eligible to play in international competition. So the assumption by a large segment of the media was that American basketball officials were angered by the loss, and thus decided to declare NBA players eligible so the U.S. could reclaim its rightful spot as the best basketball country in the world. That would seem to make sense - except that it is not true. When the U.S. team with college players lost in 1988, the only players who could not participate in international competition were NBA players. Brazil's brilliant scoring machine Oscar Schmidt was playing in Italy and earning a salary in the $500,000 per year range at the time. So were many others. To FIBA Secretary-General Boris Stankovic, the head of the organization that governs international basketball, that did not seem fair. So he decided a change was needed and he led the movement to change the rules.

Brazil loves Nene Nuggets star to lead his country in quest for spot in Olympics By Chris Tomasson, Rocky Mountain News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Oscar Schmidt was the Michael Jordan of Brazil. And, like Jordan, he retired this year. So Brazil needs a new basketball legend. Could it be Nene, last season's rookie surprise for the Denver Nuggets? GetAd('31', false, 'c1', 120, 600, 'NUGGETS_ARTICLE_DETAIL', ''); "The timing is almost the same," said Michael Coyne, Nene's Cleveland-based agent. "Michael Jordan retired and LeBron James is coming in. And Oscar is leaving the game, and then there is Nene." Nene is a long way from replacing Schmidt, the all-time leading scorer in Olympic history and best known in America for lighting up Team USA for 46 points as the Brazilians won the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis. But Nene can start mixing the cement for any future statues in his homeland tonight when Brazil faces the United States in the Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The 6-foot-11 Nene, a center and power forward, might have been named first-team All-Rookie last season, but this will be a daunting task. He will run into a forest of redwoods that go by the names of Tim Duncan, Jermaine O'Neal, Elton Brand and Kenyon Martin, who replaced Karl Malone on the U.S. team Tuesday.

Primo giro.
