Out from the shadow in the Sunshine State
Felipe Schmidt left Brazil and the constant comparisons to his dad.
By JOHN C. COTEY, Times Staff Writer Published December 1, 2003 To understand why Felipe Schmidt would choose to move 4,300 miles from his Sao Paulo home to attend Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, why he would ask his parents to send him to a different country at the age of 14, why he would tackle the task of learning a new language, know this: He can play basketball in peace. He can play without the constant comparisons. He can play without disappointing those hoping he can be as great as his father. It's not a bad tradeoff: your country for an identity.

This 16-team tournament is an event of FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, and features countries representing Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. Since its start in 1950, the World Basketball Championship is held every four years. It is the most competitive and prestigious tournament in international basketball, and it is a great honour for participating athletes to represent their countries. Why NBA Players Can Participate Before the 1992 Olympic Games, NBA players could not participate in international competition. From staff and wire reports Oscar Schmidt, the long-range shooter who led Brazil to a historic win over the United States in the 1987 Pan American Games, announced his retirement on Monday in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. "The time has come to say goodbye to the thing I love most in my life: basketball," the 45-year-old forward said at a tearful news conference. "I'd like to play forever." It almost seems he has. Known to generations of sports fans simply as Oscar, he leaves the court after a 26-year career with a handful of achievements that might never be surpassed.

OLYMPIC HISTORY From 1936 until 1972, basketball was about who could beat the United States - and no one did, in seven attempts. Then came the famous game between the US and the Soviet Union and the case of a British official, a US protest and a vault load of medals that some say still remain in a Munich bank to this day. The Soviet Union beat the US again in 1988 in the semi-finals before professionals were allowed in to the Games and the dream teams arrived to claim back supremacy for the US just as the Soviet Union faded into history. The stars of the National Basketball Association, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, were professionals among amateurs. In 1992 they were clearly taking sweets from the mouths of babes. For all their worth, however, the dream teams do not hold the title of most prolific Olympic scorer. That honour goes to Oscar Schmidt, of Brazil, who in 38 games in five Olympic Games has scored 1,093 points, an average of 28.8 points a game.

Boxscore
Oscar, Oscar, Oscar: Dream team shuts down Schmidt
By Chris Sheridan
AP Basketball Writer July 30, 1996 Atlanta Dream Team met Oscar, and Oscar never had a chance. Oscar Schmidt, the most prolific scorer in international basketball history, freed himself of Scottie Pippen's defense just enough to score 26 points Tuesday night. It hardly mattered as the U.S. team routed Brazil 98-75. Schmidt's last Olympic game in the spotlight was predictable a few crazy shots, plenty of defensive attention from the United States, and another romp for the Dream Team, which has won its last three games handily. The United States improved its career Olympic record to 99-2 and moved into the semifinals to face Australia on Thursday. Yugoslavia and Lithuania will play in the other semifinal. Pippen, who has become the defensive stopper for the United States, played rough with Schmidt, especially in the second half, when the 38-year-old forward managed only seven points. Schmidt went to the bench with 9:27 left yelling at the referees and complaining about the Americans' physical defense. But he returned with 3:59 left and scored the final basket of the game a runner from a tough angle on the right side over the outstretched arms of Hakeem Olajuwon. But by then, the highlight for much of the crowd had already happened and Schmidt wasn't it. Instead, the two loudest cheers were for the U.S. women's gymnastics team, which appeared at center court at halftime, and Charles Barkley's encore of the YMCA dance he first performed last Friday.

Lithuania beats host Australia for bronze medal
Click here for more on this story Latest: Saturday September 30, 2000 10:52 PM Saulius Strombergas of Lithuania jumps to shoot above Sam Mackinnon of Australia. William West/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Lithuania's third straight bronze medal meant no medal again for five-time Olympian Andrew Gaze. Just two days after giving the United States the biggest scare in men's Olympic basketball history, Lithuania beat Australia 89-71 in the third-place game Sunday (Saturday night EDT). Lithuania has won the bronze medal in each of its three Olympic appearances, starting with the 1992 Games. "This young team didn't leave the level we played at the previous games," Lithuania coach Jonas Kazluskas said. "We kept the same level high level. It's no secret we're happy with another bronze medal. We are pleased with what we did." Gaze was playing in his fifth and final Olympics in front of a home crowd that cheered every time his name was said let alone when he scored. He will have to settle for the record for most games played (40) and second place on the career scoring list to Brazil's Oscar Schmidt.

Cincinnati Basketball Timeline
  • After several unsuccessful attempts to organize the sport, basketball became an established part of Cincinnati's intercollegiate program with the hiring if its first head coach, Henry S. Pratt. No games were played that year.
  • Basketball formally debuted as a selected varsity team played nine games. Cincinnati lost to Yale but defeated a team from the University of Kentucky while compiling a 5-4 record, the remaining games against non-collegiate teams. Home games were played in a gym in the basement of McMicken Hall. Pillars on the court gave UC a home court advantage.
  • Cincinnati completed the season with an unblemished 9-0 record, claiming the mythical Ohio Collegiate Championship.
