Bill Russell
By: Daniel W.
William Felton Russell was born in Monroe, Louisiana on February 12, 1934. Monroe was a typical small town in the "Deep South" with racial segregation. By the age of nine Bill and his family moved to Oakland, California into the "integrated" projects. In 1946, Bill's mom caught a rare case of the flu, she stayed hospitalized for about two weeks, then died. Bill's dad took care of both of his sons by himself.
After failing to make any sports teams in junior high school he served as the school mascot in high school before he made the basketball team in the 10th grade. Bill graduated in 1952.
After high school Bill played at the University of San Francisco. Day by day his game improved until Bill could touch a spot on the backboard that is 14 feet high, that is four more feet than the rim's height. In addition to the basketball team, he was also in the track team as a high jumper. His best jump was a near world record.....six feet nine inches.
After college Bill tried for the Olympic basketball team, he made the team and they won all eight of their games by at least 30 points. They also won the gold medal. On the 9th of December, just three days after the Olympics, he got married to Rose Swisier, then shortly after that his basketball career began.

Bill Russell was the cornerstone of the Boston Celtics' dynasty of the 1960s, an uncanny shotblocker who revolutionized NBA defensive concepts. A five-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a 12-time All-Star, the angular center amassed 21,620 career rebounds, an average of 22.5 per game, and led the league in rebounding four times. He had 51 boards in one game, 49 in two others, and a dozen consecutive seasons of 1,000 or more rebounds. His many individual accolades were well deserved, but they were only products of Russell's philosophy of team play.

They were pro basketball's most dominant team. Never mind "three-peats." The Boston Celtics of the 1950's and '60s pulled off an "eight-peat." The Celtics had Cousy and Sharman and Havlicek. They had the Joneses K.C. and Sam. But only one star was there for all 11 titles from 1957 to 1969. Bill Russell the prototypical defensive center was a champion from his rookie season until his last game in his last championship series. Before he arrived, the Celtics had never won a National Basketball Association title. Five times the 6-foot-9 1/2 Russell was voted MVP. Four times he was the league's leading rebounder. He played in every All-Star Game after his rookie year. His 21,620 rebounds (22.5 per game) are second all-time to Wilt Chamberlain's 23,924 (22.9 average). Relying on his left-handed hook, Russell averaged 15.1 points per game in 963 regular-season games. He probably would have led the league in blocked shots several years, but that stat wasn't kept then. He was complex, introspective, enigmatic, principled, aloof. His refusal to sign autographs was legendary.

"It wasn't a matter of Wilt versus Russell with Bill. He would let Wilt score 50 if we won. The thing that was most important to him was championships, rings and winning," says former teammate John Havlicek about Bill Russell on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Bill Russell, who led the Celtics to 11 NBA titles and was the 1st African-American head coach in the NBA, will be profiled on Tuesday, June 8, at 8 and 11 p.m. ET.
