OSCAR ROBERTSON Oscar Robertson (The Big 0) is one of the most enduringly popular and respected athletes of the 20th century Generally considered the greatest all-around player in basketball history, he remains an international ambassador for the game 25 years after his retirement. He has been an all-time all-star at every level from high school to the National Basketball Association, which named him one of its 50 greatest players of all time. He is a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He served as President of the NBA Players Association from 1963-74 and is immediate Past President of the Retired NBA Players Association. Born November 24,1938 in Charlotte, Tennessee, and raised in Indianapolis, Oscar Robertson first attracted national attention at Indianapolis' Crispus Attucks High School, where he led his team to a 45-game winning streak, two consecutive Indiana state championships and a national championship. Attucks was the first African-American school and the first Indianapolis school to win the Indiana state crown, and the first African-American school to win a national championship. At University of Cincinnati, where he became known as The Big 0, he twice led the Bearcats to the Final Four. He was a three-time first team All-American, and the first player to lead the NCAA in scoring three straight years or to win Player of the Year honors three times. (The U.S. Basketball Writers renamed their Player of the Year Award The Oscar Robertson Trophy in his honor in 1998.) Following graduation in 1960 with a B.S. degree in Business, he co-captained the undefeated 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medalist team, often considered the greatest basketball team ever put together.

Oscar Roberston: a basketball legend
During the early 1960's, a great deal of pressure was mounting on the American people. The Cold War, with concerns to Vietnam, had involved America in a war that almost no one wanted, increasing a social strain on American society. And the children of the 60's had been the second generation in a row to break away from their parents' beliefs. People were scared, believing that America was losing what is called, "American Pride". Bob Dylan puts it best when he states in his famous song, "Times are a changing". Everything was changing, along with the sport of basketball. During this time, a young man, an All-American from the Unversity of Cincinnati, entered the National Basketball Assioction (NBA), preparing to change the game of basketball forever. bodyOffer(474) As a 22 year old youngster, Oscar Robertson was ready to revolutionlize the game of basketball. He is considered by many, and by myself, as the greatest all-around player of all-time. During his illustrious 14 year career from 1960-1974, which involved both the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks, he averaged 25.7 points, 9.5 assists, and 7.5 rebounds. His teams went to the playoffs 10 out of the 14 seasons that he was in the league, winning an NBA Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971. He won "Rookie of the Year" in 1960-61, as well as being selected to "All NBA 1st Team". He was selected to "All NBA 1st Team" for the first 9 years he was in the league. He was also a 12 time NBA All-Star. During this time he also created the Triple-Double.

Introduction
Subject Categories Index Cincinnati Historical ... Contact Us Oscar Robertson Oscar Robertson, nicknamed "The Big O," was born November 24, 1938 on a farm in Charlotte, Tennessee. When he was four years old, his family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Robertson began playing basketball as a child using a tin can in place of a ball. Later, when he had a regular basketball, he would dribble it constantly. In high school, he led his basketball team to two Indiana state titles.
Following high school, Robertson decided to attend the University of Cincinnati. While on the UC team from 1957 to 1960, he led the nation in scoring. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team in 1960 which won a gold medal in Rome.
After leaving UC in 1960, he became a player in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals. For the 1961-1962 season, Robertson achieved a "triple-double" average, which means his averages for points, assists and rebounds were in double figures. This accomplishment has never been matched. Robertson continued to play with the Royals for ten years before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Also, in the late 1960s, he served as president of the NBA Players Association. In Milwaukee, he helped lead the Bucks to an NBA championship in 1971. Robertson retired from the Bucks in 1974.

Oscar Robertson received every major award in basketball. In 13 years with the NBA, he set astonishing records; in his first 5 years of playing, he averaged double digits in points, rebounds, and assists, a feat no player before or after has matched. But Robertson attracted as much attention for his controversial stances and uncompromising personality as he did for his on-court magic.

    Oscar defined the triple-double
    By Ron Flatter

    Special to ESPN.com
Long before there were Michael and Magic, there was "The Big O." Before Jordan and Johnson redefined the role of a guard, Oscar Robertson defined it. Oscar Robertson was traded from Cincinnati to Milwaukee after a dispute with coach Bob Cousy. Long before they knew what to call a triple-double, Robertson averaged it over an entire season. Long before the moves had names, Robertson invented them. The head fake that led to driving layups. The ability to decide in mid-air whether to pass or shoot. The arsenal of shots that included a radar-like fadeaway jumper. His countless skills enabled him to become the first college player to lead the nation in scoring three consecutive years, to be an Olympic gold medalist in 1960, to win an NBA MVP award, to be first-team all-league for his first nine pro seasons. "Robertson was a big man with the moves of a really tremendous little man," former Boston Celtics guard Bill Sharman said. In his 14 seasons with the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks, Robertson scored 26,710 points and set the NBA record for most assists in a career 9,887. The mark lasted almost two decades, and even though many including Robertson argue official scorers have become more lenient in judging assists, his total still ranks third all-time behind John Stockton and Magic.
