To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. He's an avid sports fan who loves the competitiveness and excitement of sports as much as I do. But his game of preference is football. Anyway, just before the playoffs, I asked my boy if he caught a particular basketball game (I forgot who was playing) on TV and he said to me, and I quote, "I don't watch basketball until football season is over." That's right. You read that last line correctly. After picking my jaw off the floor, I asked him why, and he said something to the effect of not wanting to clutter his mind with frivolous early season basketball games while football was about to hit it's zenith. I can't remember his exact words, because at this point I temporarily blacked out due to his insanity-laced diatribe. So forgive me for not printing his words verbatim. Of coursewhen I recoveredwe had one of our customary loud, comical, below the belt, screaming matches of why each of us was right and the other, foolishly incorrect.

With Mutombo scoring inside and Rider and Jackson scoring from the perimeter and on drives, the offense proved more diverse. Mutombo's play and Rider's effectiveness have helped counter the losses of Jackson (knee surgery) and Roshown McLeod (groin).... With Rider's personal issues apparently resolved, he has performed better than anyone in the league the past few weeks. More important, he is giving the team an emotional charge nearly every night. PROBLEM TO SOLVE: Someone other than Rider and Jackson needs to establish himself as a true scorer. McLeod and LaPhonso Ellis are injured. PG Jason Terry, the No. 10 pick in the draft has been inconsistent. He was expected to be the starter, but he has been outplayed by Bimbo Coles. SF Chris Crawford lacks the confidence. C/PF Lorenzen Wright has had his moments, but the Hawks expected a bigger impact than they've received. They're glad he's in shape, which was a problem in the offseason, but too often he has bad rebounding positiongetting too far under the basketand he remains foul prone. Curtis Bunn
