Willis Reed
Willis Reed was born on June 25, 1942 in Hico, Louisiana, and grew up on a farm just outside nearby Bernice. His parents were Willis Sr. and Inell Reed, and his father worked as a warehouse foreman (Dawson, 2002). He played high school basketball at West Side High School, where he won All-Conference honors 1959 and 1960, as well as All-State honors those same two years (Dawson, 2002). After his high school playing days were over he attended Grambling State University for four years. During those four years he managed to fit in more accomplishments than most people would ever dream of fitting into an entire career. He led Grambling to three Southwest Conference titles, three NAIA Final Fours, including 1961 where he led his team to a national title as a freshman. He earned All-American honors as well as All-NAIA Tournament team in both 1963 and 1964. Also in 1963 he represented the United States in the Pan-American Games in Brazil. In his career he scored 2,280 points, which was good enough to land him in the NAIA Hall-of-Fame in 1970 (Dawson, 2002).

Everyman's king Regular guy in an extraordinary time Dave DeBusschere brushes aside Bucks and the player then known as Lew Alcindor on path to basket in 1969-70 season that would end with the NBA title. This comes from a book called "The Open Man," written by Dave DeBusschere with Dick Schaap after the Knicks' first title in 1970. It is about the heart that finally gave out on DeBusschere yesterday afternoon, and a night 33 years ago when he was still young and on top of the world, the way Willis Reed was, and Clyde Frazier and Bill Bradley, in that jazz age of basketball when everyone talked about the Knicks and their Miracle on 33rd St. There had been a party for the Knicks in the city. When it was over, DeBusschere and his wife, Geri, drove back to their home on Long Island and went to bed.

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The two Knicks laughed and embraced, and even lobbed a few innocuous barbs at each other. With a 2-8 record, how could there be cause for such happiness? This was a gathering of Knicks past, not present. Looking as spry and fit as they did when the Knicks last brought a title to New York, Willis Reed and Dave DeBusschere, as well as former Knick player and announcer Cal Ramsey, gathered at the New York Athletic Club last night for a dinner to toast New York, which has been selected as the U.S. candidate for the 2012 Olympic Games. But Knick fans everywhere probably wish they would suit up and provide the elixir for a season gone wrong. "Well, they're struggling," Reed said. "But everyone goes through this. The Lakers did. The Celtics did. I thought when they got (Marcus) Camby and (Kurt) Thomas that there was a unique possibility. They'll have to do some rebuilding." Reed, who is the senior vice president of the Nets, also voiced his support for beleaguered Knick coach Don Chaney. "I've known Don a long time," Reed said. "I tried to get him to coach at Grambling (Reed's alma mater) at one point. But I'm glad the Knicks made the commitment with him. He'll get them to bounce back."

New York Knicks Legendary Captain Willis Reed Comes Back to the Garden to Help Today's Team
By Todd Allen Originally printed in New York Resident , the week of 12/22/03
It seems like anytime someone in the media speaks with Willis Reed — and the wait list of television cameras and tape recorders runs three deep as the big man emerges from the locker room during pregame warm-ups — all they want to talk about is Reed’s returning to the court in his first title run with the Knicks, more than 33 years ago. Granted, it was a moment that has become legend in the Big Apple, but it seems trite to keep coming back to that event. It’s a different century, and in the new millennium you might ask yourself, “What has Willis Reed done lately?” The answer is plenty. After a number of years in the front office across the river with the New Jersey Nets, Reed has come home to Madison Square Garden, serving as special basketball adviser for the Knicks, and that’s where his current adventures begin.

There certainly hasn't been much for the crowd at Madison Square Garden to cheer about in the past couple of years. The New York Knicks finally made the playoffs, and then were promptly dispatched by their cross-river rivals. The New Jersey Nets took 4 games in a row to sweep the first-round playoff series. The atmosphere in America's most famous basketball arena was noticeably different thirty-four years ago when the Knickerbockers won their first-ever NBA Championship. They took down the favored Los Angeles Lakers in game 7 in New York City.
The Garden crowd was somewhat subdued before the final game because the Knicks' All-Star center Willis Reed was not on the court during the pre-game warm-ups. Reed injured his right leg in game 5. The Lakers took advantage of Reed's absence in game 6 and trounced the Knicks 135-113.
