Sports
Probably the earliest known description of a sporting event in Croatia is from the 18th century (1764). It referred to the regatta of two fishing boats representing the cities of Split and Makarska, from an islet near Milna on the island of Brac to the Split harbour. It was the Makaran boat that triumphed! One of truly fascinating exploits in which Croatian mariners participated is related to ARCTIC EXPEDITION in 1872-1874 , organized by the Austrian-Hungarian state. The first international football (soccer) match where Croatia participated with its national name had been held in 1907 (with Czechia). The Croatian Sporting Union was founded in Zagreb in 1909. In 1911 the Croatian representation participated under its flag (and with its national name) on the European championship in Torino. In 1912 Franjo Gregl was the European champion in bicycling. Outstanding Croatian wrestler ("junak iz Like ") was Marijan Matijevic (1878-1951). Matijevic travelled throughout the world to exhibit his extraordinary physiscal power (bending metal rods, stone breaking), including China. He is known to have surpassed Primo Carnera from Italy. Burried in the town of Zupanja near Danube.

All the pain has made it tough for teams to gain
By Peter May, Globe Staff, 12/21/2003 This past Wednesday, Troy Murphy of the Golden State Warriors made his first appearance of the season. He had missed every game up to that point with a torn tendon in his right foot. He's one of the lucky ones. At least he's playing again. ADVERTISEMENT From Washington to Seattle and points in between, several NBA teams, including, still, Murphy's Warriors, are waiting for a key player to make his first appearance of the season. Though these things are hard to quantify, there may have never been an NBA season closing in on two months when so many star or quasi-star players are still out. Perhaps the team hit hardest, although it's a subjective argument, is the Minnesota Timberwolves. Remember their great summer, when they re-signed Kevin Garnett and then added Latrell Sprewell, Sam Cassell, and Michael Olowokandi? Well, the team Minnesota thought it had has yet to appear, mainly because two critical guys, Wally Szczerbiak and Troy Hudson, had yet to play this season, although Hudson was activated yesterday. "You can't allow yourself to think what it might be like if they were here. Because they're not and we have to go with what's here," the Wolves' MVP, Garnett, said. "We just want to get them healthy and back on the court. It'd be great to have them."

NETS NEW JERSEY Story The first thing Drazen said when he arrived to New Jersey was: It’s all over now, I got here all I wanted. Nobody is going to stop me now
And nobody did. Drazen raised his points per game average to 10 ppg to the end of the year playing an average of 20.5 minutes in 43 games, with one of the league’s best points-per-minute ratios.
Next year was his career explosion. Drazen become one of the premier shooting guards in the NBA. With an average of 20.6 points per game and shooting 51 percent from the floor Drazen took the title of the best shooting guard in the NBA.
And what about New Jersey Nets? Even though, they had Derrick Coleman and Kenny Anderson New Jersey Nets never entered play-off race until Drazen’s arrival. Drazen especially liked Houston whom he knocked down 44 points at Houston.
I don’t know why, but I felt like I could do anything to Vernon Maxwell that day.
Drazen Petrovic, after scoring 44 points against Houston It was memorable when Drazen visited Portland Trail Blazers, but as a New Jersey Nets player. Drazen received standing ovation that will be long remembered in Blazers’ arena.

Coach Larry Brown's USA squad had hopes of capturing the United States' third FIBA Junior World Championship in as many tries, and with a talented roster featuring 6'7" Lionel Simmons, 6'2" Stephen Thompson, 7'2" Dwayne Schintzius and 6'6" Larry Johnson, the U.S. optimism was rightfully high. Opening the competition facing Puerto Rico, the United States, led by Thompson's 19 points and 16 points each from Ron Huery and Schintzius, recorded a solid 109-89 victory. Simmons accounted for 16 points as the U.S. held off Australia 84-80, then, one day later, the Americans man-handled China, 100-50, as Simmons scored 21 points.

NBA Conference Call: “Basketball Without Borders”
Toni Kukoc, Atlanta Hawks

Vlade Divac, Sacramento Kings
March 29, 2001
Kukoc Opening Statement: Actually, I am very happy to go back to Treviso. I don’t know if it is known that I spent two years of my professional career playing there for Benetton and it’s a great organization with great people. I really think they are, with the NBA, doing a great thing making this camp. So, hopefully we will all go and have fun. Q: What kind of example from past experiences can you use to connect with the kids?
Kukoc: As you know, I grew up in Split in Croatia, which was a part of the ex-Yugoslavia before the war started. So, it’s going to be pretty easy for me to connect with the kids. Obviously, they are going to have plenty of questions about European and the NBA experience, so I’ll be more than glad to talk about that and talk about basketball in general. And, I think the basketball is a great way to actually be involved in a sport, get the friends outside of the streets, which is a risk to get involved in drugs and these, let’s call them not-good things. Q: Is three days enough to really have the time to create a special environment?

"Swee Pee" "Swee Pee"

Basketball nightmare for Croatia
By Dan Sewell, Associated Press writer
ATLANTA Don't cry for Argentina. Or at least, save some tears for Croatia.
The 1992 men's basketball silver medalists' hopes for a medal could be hurting, like Toni Kukoc's broken left thumb, after their first game of the Olympics today.
Thanks to some bad luck in the blind draw, Croatia faces a tough Lithuania team and was thrown into the same pool with the Dream Team, which loosens up tonight against Argentina.
Croatia's test comes less than two weeks after their best player fractured the top of his left, shooting thumb in an exhibition game.
"How important is Toni to us? That's like asking what Michael Jordan brings to the Chicago Bulls," said Croatia's Dino Radja, who plays forward for the Boston Celtics.
Kukoc charged out onto the Morehouse College court for practice yesterday afternoon and effortlessly swished his first shot from the top of the three-point circle. But as the workout proceeded, he at times appeared to have trouble receiving passes.
"So-so. If I play, I play," Kukoc said, thumb buried in a cup of ice after practice. "We'll see tomorrow."

Getting your money's worth at FleetCenter
In lieu of the current dilemma facing the Boston Celtics winning basketball games I'd like to take this opportunity to present you, the non-diehard basketball fan, with this guide to enjoying an evening of entertainment that may not necessarily result in a victory.
Here is a sampling of what the average ticket-holder receives for his hard-earned dollar, and with ticket prices as high as $50 for a baseline seat, we will let you be the judge as to whether it is worth the money.
If the last time you paid to see the Celtics was at the Boston Garden, you will be surprised at how times have changed. In an effort to lure younger fans, the Celtics have joined the rest of David Stern's outposts in using music, videos and lighting to stress entertainment while attempting to maintain competitive balance.
Arrive early enough and you will notice how John Mellencamp, the Cranberries and Amber none of whom have ever worn a Celtics uniform are as much a part of the pregame as the traditional shootaround and layup drill.
Not only will you hear music, but you will also see how the Celtics are the most famous franchise in pro basketball. During player introductions, video of Celtics legends Larry Bird, Bob Cousy and Bill Russell among others is intertwined with footage of current Celtics Antoine Walker, Dino Radja and Rick Fox to illustrate the link between the past, present and future of the Green Team.
