Incident in Alabama
I love sports, but it's important not to take it too seriously. If your obsession with sports leads you to fire a gun at your own son , you're taking it too seriously. Check out this story about an Alabama fan who did just that.

Gillick Steps Down
Today Pat Gillick resigned as GM of the Mariners , but will remain with the team as a consultant.
I would argue that Gillick is one of the best general managers of all-time. He took a Toronto team that was still finding itself in the 1980s, and turned it ultimately into a World Series team. He moved onto Baltimore where he put together several fine teams until Peter Angelos went insane. All he did in Seattle was assemble a team that had the most regular season wins in history. About the only questionable move by Gillick in Seattle were his repeated decisions not to make a trade at the deadline. Some credit this with the Mariners' inability to make the World Series, and/or collapse down the stretch the last two years. Perhaps Gillick had gotten a little old.
But the bottom line is that Gillick was in charge of three franchises that were among the best in baseball because of the moves he made. I doubt the Mariners will find a better GM. Pat Gillick belongs in the Hall-of-Fame.

Exclusive to TheSabre.Com and the Journal of Prickly Heat The Dougster has finally emerged from his Y2K+1 bunker refreshed, invigorated, and full of surplus creamed corn, ready to tackle the earth-shattering events that have rocked central Virginia in the past few weeks. LOOKS LIKE OLDEN POLYNICE IS UP TO HIS OLD TRICKS again on a recent trip to the Big Apple to play the Knicks. New York City’s finest arrested the former Hoo outside a Greenwich Village nightclub, this time for impersonating the cop from the Village People. "My people say that he looked like an NYPD cop in every respect, sans the toilet plunger," said Mayor Rudy Guiliani. “He would have gone unnoticed, but he began accosting passersby, demanding they give him headphones. You just don’t do that in this town,” the Mayor warned. “Certainly not without first serving some apprenticeship role as a cowboy, or perhaps a biker.” Polynice claims to have been a fan of the group ever since witnessing their cinematic tour de force, Can’t Stop the Music, which is best remembered for gold medal-winning decathlete Bruce Jenner’s breakthrough acting debut. “I am the epitome of a Macho Man,” said an unabashed Polynice when contacted in his Rikers Island holding cell, “although my current surroundings are making me rethink this whole dress-as-a-gay-cop routine.”

The 2003-2004 Westfield State College men's basketball team finished with a 13-11 record and placed third in the Massachusetts State Athletics Conference with a 7-5 mark. A blend of seniors and freshmen guided the Owls to their winning season. Their balanced scoring attack was led by freshman point guard T.J. Baker, who averaged team highs of 12.8 points and 3.2 assists per game. Smooth-shooting freshman guard Ricky Ogboin averaged 12.5 points; he led the team in free throw shooting (.773) and was second in field goal shooting (.472). Baker and Ogboin were starters for most of the season, along with classmate Dan Holbrook. The 6-5 freshman forward from Lexington was the conference's leading rebounder for most of the season before missing the final four games with a foot injury. Holbrook averaged 9.7 rebounds and 9.1 points per game. Senior forward Vaso Jaukovic was a second team all-conference selection. He averaged 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He also led the Owls with 35 three-point baskets.

Men's basketball gears up for Globetrotters
By Mike Petersen Published: Friday, November 15, 2002 After demolishing the Louisiana Futures on Nov. 4, the UConn men's basketball team prepares for its second exhibition game of the season against the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters at the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday night.
This is not the Harlem Globetrotters of the past, knocking around the Washington Generals with basketballs on strings and other antics.
While the fans will not be treated to see "Wild Thing" Wilson flying through the air to dunk on a 12-foot rim, the 2002 Globetrotters are for real. Led by Cedric Ceballos and Olden Polynice, Harlem comes to the Civic Center ready to give UConn a game it probably won't forget for a while.
Polynice, a 7 foot center and ex-NBA veteran, will provide plenty of problems in the middle and on the baseline for sophomore Emeka Okafor and senior Justin Brown.
UConn will have to get out of the gate fast, hoping to get more production from freshman starter Hilton Armstrong and reserves Denham Brown and Rashad Anderson. Brown and Anderson combined for 40 points in the win over the Futures.

Deseret Morning News Former Jazz big man Olden Polynice is one step closer to returning to the NBA.
NBA veteran Olden Polynice is returning to Los Angeles Clippers.
Associated Press The Los Angeles Clippers on Monday announced the signing of 38-year-old Polynice, who last played in the league as Utah's starting center for two seasons from 1999-01.
Financial terms of Polynice's deal were not disclosed, but it is believed that the contract does include guaranteed money.
The 14-year NBA vet broke in with Seattle in 1987, played with the Clippers from 1991-92 and also spent time with Detroit and Sacramento.
Polynice signed with Philadelphia last fall but was released in the preseason. The 7-footer also had stints last season in the CBA, the USBL and with the Harlem Globetrotters. MAJERUS PRAISES MILLER: University of Utah coach Rick Majerus had some kind words last week regarding Andre Miller

Looking for its place in history Virginia's unexpected trip to the Final Four in 1984 is often overlooked
By Doug Doughty
Some people may be wondering about the observance of the 20th anniversary of Virginia's 1984 Final Four trip. Was there a reunion? Were there interview requests? Speeches? A halftime ceremony at midcourt? "I don't know how many questions that was," said Tim Mullen, a junior on the 1984 team, "but, the answer is, 'No, no, no and no.'" Mullen, now relocated in Charlottesville and a regular spectator at Virginia home games, isn't complaining. While often overlooked, the former players and coaches haven't forgotten their magical 1984 run. The 1976 and 1981 teams are generally considered Virginia's most famous, the former for winning the Cavaliers' only ACC championship and the latter for making UVa's first trip to the Final Four. Ex-head coach Terry Holland now says the '84 team deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. Funny, that's not what he was saying at the time.

UVa snaps postseason losing streak but finishes 16-16
Cavaliers still waiting for better days Discipline problems off the court and turnover problems on the court cause Virginia to struggle much of the season, especially at the end.
By DOUG DOUGHTY
THE ROANOKE TIMES
Fortunately for Pete Gillen, there was no microphone handy when Virginia ended its men's basketball season with a second-round NIT loss to St.John's. Moreover, the Cavaliers were on the road, so Gillen wasn't tempted to lift the spirits of the UVa faithful with promises of better days ahead. That's what happened after a home loss to South Carolina in the first round of the 2002 NIT, and Gillen has been answering for it ever since. "Last year, we were 17-12, which is disappointing," Gillen said Tuesday in his first teleconference since the end of the season. "Going to the NIT this year [and finishing] 16-16 is even worse.

Better effort. Very rough around the edges. That's the consensus opinion of the Purdue basketball team after Tuesday's exhibition opener in which the older, experienced Harlem Globetrotters pulled away for an 83-64 victory in Mackey Arena. Of the 12 Boilermakers who played, seven did not participate during the Big Ten Conference portion of the 2001-02 season. While the newcomers hustled and played with a passion that was lacking throughout most of this past season, there were plenty of mistakes on opening night.

No job security assured for Chaney
Isiah Thomas sat down with Don Chaney to discuss the state of the New York Knicks, with the new team president providing no job security assurances to the coach. "We talked about the team, we didn't talk about my status," Chaney said. "He knows me, he knows where I'm coming from, he knows who I am. It's not about assurances for me, I don't need that." Chaney described himself and Thomas as friends who have remained in contact over the years. But there's a realistic possibility Chaney could lose his job to Thomas, which Chaney dismissed as a fact of life for any NBA coach . . . MEN'S BASKETBALL: Globetrotters come to Diddle
By Kyle Hightower Published: Thursday, November 7, 2002 Dennis Felton and the men's basketball team's quest for their third consecutive Sun Belt Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance will again go through Harlem.
Western's season unofficially opens Saturday with its first exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters, who the Hilltoppers defeated last season at Diddle Arena.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. following the women's exhibition matchup against the Houston Jaguars.
Doors will open for Saturday's doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. The WKU Athletic Ticket Office has 600 seats remaining for the two games.
One ticket will get fans into both games, with women's season-ticket holders allowed to sit in general admission seats for the men's game.
Men's season-ticket holders may sit in a general admission section for the women's contest. There will be no re-entry for fans that leave between games.
Fans will be admitted to Diddle Arena at three of the four usual entry points. Students and the general public can get in the arena at Entrance 1 (Smith Stadium and University Boulevard), while luxury suite holders, the general public and people on any pass list will be admitted at Entrance 2 (Smith Stadium and Big Red Way).
