| Phills shares tragic story By DAVE CRUZ, News-Topic Staff Writer, dcruz@charter.net The school's video production class has aired messages all week about safe driving. Today students will learn about the ultimate consequence of risky behavior with a school-wide "Death Day" and Friday they'll sign the "Prom Promise" not to drink and or use drugs. In a Wednesday morning assembly, they heard from Kendall Phills of Charlotte, a woman who knows too well the high cost of poor decision making. She is the widow of the late Charlotte Hornets basketball star, Bobby Phills. In January 2000, Bobby Phills made the decision to race a teammate to restaurant after practice. Phills crashed his supercharged Porche 911 on Tyvola Road in Charlotte at 107 mph and was killed. Phills, whose appearance at the school came at the invitation of Dr. John Thuss, told the students that they, like her late husband, can also be the victims of their own poor decisions. "I know what you're thinking. It can never happen to me," Phills said. Phills said she and her husband thought the same way before the accident. "Bobby was 30 years old. He was having the best season of his life. He was going after the Sixth Man Award," she said. "It was a senseless tragedy." | |
