Neighborhoods Roads Special Programs ... Speeding Awareness Campaign / Speeding Campaign Press Releases Speeding Campaign Press Releases The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee adds new elements to it's 2004 speeding awareness campaign Charlotte, N.C. - The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee continues its "Speed A Little, Lose A Lot" speeding awareness campaign in 2004. As in years past, the goal is to educate the public about the dangers and consequences of speeding. To augment that ongoing effort, the committee is partnering with the Bobby Phills Foundation to help promote the "Speed A Little, Lose A Lot" message to youth in Mecklenburg County.
Charlotte Hornets professional basketball player, Bobby Phills died in a car crash January 12, 2000 as a result of speeding. In honor of her late husband, Kendall Phills established the Bobby Phills Foundation to help make a positive difference in the lives of youth. Kendall Phills will visit area high schools, attend promotional events and conduct interviews throughout the year to share the tragic loss of her husband due to speeding. As part of the campaign, the Bobby Phills Foundation will lend its voice to billboard messages and radio and television advertisements concerning the importance of safe driving.
In addition to the education and public awareness arm of the campaign, enforcement will be stepped up in speed-related crash corridors in Mecklenburg County and a two-year trial photo radar speed enforcement program will be implemented in early 2004 to supplement current efforts.

(AP) Charlotte Hornets guard Bobby Phills was speeding in his Porsche after practice Wednesday when he lost control, crashed into a car and died instantly. Stunned and tearful teammates and Hornets officials gathered at the accident scene less than a mile from the Charlotte Coliseum, where minutes earlier Phills and the other players had been practicing for Wednesday night's game with the Chicago Bulls . The game was postponed. Phills, 30, who began his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers , was traveling at a "very high rate of speed" when he collided with a car headed toward the coliseum, police spokesman Keith Bridges said. A minivan rear-ended the other car. Two people in those vehicles were hospitalized. Witnesses said teammate David Wesley , the Hornets' starting point guard, also may have been driving too fast in his own Porsche, according to police. Wesley's car wasn't involved in the accident, and he was questioned at the scene.

From staff and wire reports "He was just an articulate man who understood how fortunate he was to have professional basketball as his vocation. He never, never took that for granted." — Mark Bartelstein, Phills’ Chicago-based agent "When I got him as a client, he was struggling with making the NBA. Once he got the big deal, to him, it was if nothing had ever really happened. The same laughs we had when he was struggling were the same laughs we had when he got that big contract. "To me, it’s just devastating. I’m just devastated. The guy was not just my client, he was my friend. We spoke just last night, which makes this an even harder day. To think these two kids will grow up without a father is what I keep thinking about. That’s the really terrible, awful thing about this. The world lost a great father and person today." — Bartelstein on Phills’ rise from making the NBA minimum to signing a 7-year, $32.48 million deal with Charlotte in 1997 "Bobby Phills was all that you would want in a human being. ... He had extreme high character. A family man. I can’t tell you what he meant to the Cavs. If there’s a person you would want to your children to be, a role model, it’s Bobby Phills. This is a sad day."

"You just knew Bobby was looking down on us. You can’t ask for a better person than Bobby. It is sad to have a game like this in the memory of a friend, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do." — Toronto’s Muggsy Bogues on having to play Wednesday, the day Phills died. Bogues played with Phills for the Hornets in the 1997-98 season. "He’s a guy I’ve been friends with forever. I can remember when he first set foot on the campus. He was a 6-5 center, and he always wanted to be a big guard in the NBA. That was one of his dreams. He has a beautiful wife and two children. My wife (Cassandra) is en route to Charlotte now to be with the family. We will be at the funeral in Baton Rouge. You just wonder why something like this has to happen to a guy." — San Antonio’s Avery Johnson. Johnson played with Phills at Southern University. "It’s really a tragedy, and from the team’s standpoint, there’s two people in Sidney (Lowe) and Terrell (Brandon) that were extemely close to him. He’s a self-made guy. And as a father, he’s someone you’d want your kids to be like — very responsible, unbelievably hard working. He cares about people." — Minnesota coach Flip Saunders.

Jaguar Nation Mourns The Loss of Bobby Phills
Former Southern University Basketball Great Dies in Car Wreck
January 12, 2000 Baton Rouge, LA - Shock, grief and dismay just some of the descriptive words portraying a saddened and somber mood at Southern University upon discovering facts of the untimely death of one of the Jaguar nation's most beloved family members. At the tender age of 30, one of the more lauded members of the Southern University family was relieved of his duties on earth to answer the bells of a higher calling. Former Southern University basketball great Bobby Phills departed this life on Wednesday, January 12, following a fatal two car accident in Charlotte, North Carolina. "In the loss of Bobby Phills we have truly lost a great person, a great father, a great husband and a great mentor," lamented Southern University head basketball coach Tommy Green, a mentor of Phills's as the assistant coach during the star athlete's collegiate basketball career at Southern. "When people talk about Bobby (Phills) most of the discussion will surround his prowess on the basketball court," Green continued, "but to know him personally is to know a true class act." Bobby Phills began his collegiate career at Southern in the summer of 1987 in search of a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-veterinary medicine, his chosen field of study. However, along the way an overwhelmingly gifted basketball athlete was discovered in Phills with life's journey leading him down a different path to success.
