For Andover's McLaughlin, basketball is his life
By Michael Muldoon
Eagle-Tribune Writer BOSTON If there is basketball being played, chances are you'll run into Tom McLaughlin. At Day 1 of the Shaw's Pro Summer League yesterday at UMass Boston, the Andover resident was watching intently for six hours. Tom McLaughlin "I see a couple hundred games a year: college, high school, pro and AAU," said McLaughlin. There were perhaps 700 people in attendance and it seemed he knew every one of them. One minute he's talking to old friend Bob Zuffelato, the director of basketball operations for the Toronto Raptors. The next he's sharing a laugh with his longtime client Byron Scott, the former Los Angeles Lakers star and newly-appointed New Jersey Nets coach. Isn't that Lon Kruger? Time to renew acquaintances with the new Atlanta Hawks coach, McLaughlin's former playing rival in Europe. While it may look like all fun and games hobnobbing with the game's power brokers, that isn't necessarily the case. "It's a job. It's the way I make a living," said the sports agent, who is president of Best in Sports Inc.

This year, two former Ohio State student athletes, Eddie George and Scoonie Penn, are returning to campus to be recognized for one of their greatest achievements as Buckeyes. George will receive his bachelor of science in landscape architecture and Penn his bachelor’s of science in sociology during the university’s 356th commencement, Friday (6/8) at 9:30 a.m. on the Oval. They are two of 98 former and current athletes who will receive their degrees at the ceremony. Penn and many other graduating student athletes will gather for a pre-commencement breakfast sponsored by the Department of Athletics from 7:15 to 8:45 a.m. on Friday (6/8) at the Younkin Success Center, 1640 Neil Ave. George and Penn are not the first Ohio State athletes to return to complete a degree. Turn around Buckeyes - Every now and then they get a little bit stronger: Time to step out of the shadows: Sharp-shooting Sean Connolly is another candidate to start at the off guard position. He shot 42 percent from 3-point range after he transferred from Providence College. Connolly has shot over 85 percent from the free throw line in his career, so look for him to get a lot of minutes at the end of close ball games. Sunday, February 27, 2000 Penn's last home game a big showdown Senior leads OSU vs. Illinois
    The Associated Press COLUMBUS
He may be the smallest All-American ever to put on an Ohio State uniform, but the contributions Scoonie Penn has made in two short years has clearly made him the biggest man on campus. The 5-foot-10 senior point guard plays his final game at Value City Arena on Sunday when the sixth-ranked Buckeyes take on Illinois in a critical Big Ten showdown. As emotional as he is on the court, Penn isn't likely to get caught up in what probably will be a long and loving goodbye from more than 19,000 Ohio State fans. A win will keep Ohio State (19-5, 10-3) tied for the top spot in the conference with Michigan State and Purdue heading into the last week of the regular season.

Downsizing turns net gains in Big Ten
    By David Den Herder
Daily Sports Writer CHICAGO - Has Big Ten basketball taken a page from the guidebook of corporate America? If becoming smaller, faster and collectively better defines "downsizing," then consider these teams acute corporate strategists. Walking through the field of talent at the Big Ten's preseason press conference yesterday, it was hard to find a player that towered significantly over the cameras and recorders that surrounded him. It was tougher to find a camera that wasn't pointed at the conference's two defending Final Four coaches for a majority of the morning. "The last couple of years, it has really gravitated toward the backcourt," said Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien, of Final Four fame. "There are not as many dominant low post players in the conference - it probably goes in cycles, but it seems like right now there are a lot of very good guards in the league, and I'm sure teams will play towards that - as we will." And O'Brien will, with the best healthy guard in the league. Scoonie Penn - a marquee man for the Big Ten's backcourt show and the coaches' pick for preseason player of the year - has done much to heighten expectations in Columbus.
