    • Showpiece: Europe's top players selected by basketball magazines throughout the continent face off today in inaugural East-West match
Turkish Daily News ANKARA- Istanbul today hosts the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)'s inaugural Eurostars showpiece at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Arena. Selected by a poll conducted by 10 magazines from across the continent, top stars will play against each other in teams designated "East" and "West." European basketball has long been seen as the poor relation to America's NBA, the league which regularly makes the headlines worldwide and which has also syphoned off a number of Europe's top players in recent years. FIBA is interested in building a separate identity for the European game and has introduced this Eurostars contest as part of that process. As FIBA spokesman Florian Wanninger put it, "We want our children to have heroes over here. Heroes they can see, they can touch." The selection of Turkey for this inauguration is an honor but no surprise. Turkish men's basketball has exploded into life in recent years with Efes Pilsen winning Europe's Korac Cup last season and leading a pack of clubs competitive at the highest continental level. The national team has reached two consecutive European Nations' Championship finals and appears to be a virtual certainty to make that three in a row. Also, Umit Tarhan, of Istanbul's Ulkerspor club which is co-organizing the event, speaks of a pool of "30 million" Turkish young people who are potential stars of the future.
