E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 by the Oakland Tribune (California) Nash Speaks Mind Against War in Iraq by Vittorio Tafur APPARENTLY A COUNTRY music concert is the wrong place for a war protest, the Academy Awards show is OK as long as you keep it short, and a basketball game ... well, that's still up in the air for debate.
When the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks told a London audience that she was ashamed that she and President Bush are from the same state, many Texas radio stations refused to play the group's songs. She quickly apologized. Former Santa Clara and current Dallas Mavericks star Steve Nash, though, has not apologized for his anti-war comments and said fan reaction to his stance has been "unbelievably positive." It all started with Nash wearing a T-shirt to All-Star activities in Atlanta that said, "No War. Shoot for Peace." Nash continued his protest of the war, as reporters asked him about his shirt and his beliefs, up until and after the first U.S. bombs hit Iraq last week. Those who haven't been receptive to Nash are those that don't think a basketball player should be using his forum to speak out on politics, especially a Canadian basketball player. "From the start, I spoke out just because I don't want to see the loss of life," Nash told ESPN. "People are mistaking anti-war as being unpatriotic. This has nothing to do with the fact that I'm from Canada. This is a much bigger issue. But now that we're in battle, I hope for as many lives to be spared as possible (and) as little violence as possible before a resolution."

Mavs point guard replaces an absent Carter at the Raptor's kids camp
By Rebecca Addelman Published: Tuesday, September 2, 2003 Media Credit: Jia Lu
Eyeballs popped out of their sockets. Jaws hit the floor and fingers rudely pointed. A soft murmur of "Steve...Steve...Steve" undulated through the crowd of rapt faces. Arguably the best point guard in the NBA, homegrown Steve Nash, held court at the Vince Carter Youth Basketball Camp at U of T in mid August.
Carter's last minute selection to the Olympic qualifying team, and his acceptance, meant a frantic week of rescheduling for Raptors management. This marks the first time in four years that Vince has missed a single day of camp. Make that the first time ever, and it prompted Dave Defreitas, the manager of community relations at the Raptors, to describe the camp of 2003 as "the most challenging year we've had."
With the lack of a high-profile NBA star, the camp's stock suddenly plummeted. For many campers, especially those returning for a second or third year, the main attraction is the hands-on presence of the Raptors star. But enrolment was full and camp ready to go when the U.S came knocking on Vince's door.
After unsuccessfully trying to get one of Carter's teammates to take his spot, the powers that be turned to Nash as the next logical replacement. "The way the NBA works," says Defreitas, "you can never 100 per cent secure somebody. Players, for whatever reason, might not be able to show up. Vince knew Steve was in town. He knew Steve was a reliable person."

A deft ball-handler with a deadly shooting touch, Steve Nash can easily be considered the greatest Canadian basketball player the NBA has ever seen. When he was selected as the 15th pick of the 1996 NBA draft (highest ever for a Canadian), people who knew Steve weren't surprised. But to the rest of the world, getting to know Steve Nash was a pleasant surprise. Nash has been a two-time NBA All-Star (2002, 2003). This brown haired, blue eyed Canadian was actually born in South Africa to British parents. The family relocated to Victoria, Canada when Steve was a boy, where he excelled at hockey, lacrosse and soccer. It wasn't until 8th grade that he picked up hoops. Steve was named High School Athlete of the Year in British Columbia, where he averaged 21.3 points, 11.2 assists and 9.1 rebounds per game. At Santa Clara University, Steve established himself as one of the top point guards in the country. He earned a reputation as a fiery, intense competitor who led his team to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his 4 year career. Steve was named WCC Player of the year twice, and broke school records for assists (510), 3-pointers (263) and free throw percentage (86.1%). He finished third on SCU's all time scoring list (1,689) and stands on several WCC career top 10 lists. He was honored as a finalist for the prestigious John R. Wooden Award. Steve graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Sociology in 1996.

    The Tao of Steve
    SLAM Magazine- November, 2001
by Lang Whitaker What is he doing here? The Toronto Park Hyatt, after all, is the place for potent businessmen, surgically-perfected ladies who lunch and slicked-back European travelers. Then he steps off the elevator, Steve Nash, who is probably making more money than everyone else in the hotel combined. Not that you can tell it by looking at him: black Nike Shox and a T-shirt, paired with unremarkable jeans. Though he is widely accepted as the best Canadian basketball player of all time, he enters posse-less and unfettered, the Bhuddist baller. His ascetic aesthetic is perhaps most evident atop his head: In a room full of high-maintenance hair-do's, Nash sports more of a hair-don't, his chestnut locks styled into a cross between the Gallagher brothers and Wolverine from the X-Men. NASH: I don't know...I'm happy to be able not to be concerned with my hair. ME: Because it looks like you brushed it, or something. NASH: Yeah, but I didn't put a comb to it for about eight years.

Key players flagging after national duty
By Peter May, Globe Staff, 1/25/2004 Two years ago, Mark Cuban was a veritable voice in the wilderness when the subject was international players competing in summer tournaments for national teams. Back then, the owner of the Mavericks was only wondering why there were no insurance guarantees against injury and, almost as critical, why no one had really spoken up on the matter. ADVERTISEMENT Cuban had, and still has, a team with several strong international players, three of whom Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, and Eduardo Najera are all struggling following an intense summer of competition. This time around, however, Cuban is not alone. He has allies in the owners of the Sacramento Kings and the coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Whereas then Cuban wanted insurance coverage, now, he says, he wants something more. "Don't let 'em play," he said last week. In short, if you have a talented foreigner on your squad, you are going to have to come to grips with the issue. And we don't mean Bruno Sundov. Almost everyone who played last summer for the motherland is feeling something. Of the Yanks who ventured to San Juan, most have missed some time, with a couple (Ray Allen, Allen Iverson) missing extended time. Last week, Tracy McGrady came out and said he feels fatigued. "I just don't feel the same on the court," he said. He blamed it on his summer in San Juan.
