Where are all the black baseball players?
MIZELL E-mail: Click here Archive By HUBERT MIZELL, Times Correspondent Published May 16, 2004 My favorite all-time baseball player is Hank Aaron. In the sport, there's been nobody I more admire than Jackie Robinson. In history, has there been a hitter to match the dynamics of Barry Bonds? African-American impact has been enormous, with Willie Mays, Bob Gibson, Roy Campanella, Joe Morgan, Ernie Banks, Lou Brock and Curt Flood coming quickly to mind. But, this season, as I peruse MLB rosters or scan fields while enjoying cable games, it is stunningly apparent how my black countrymen continue to disappear. Every summer, it is studied. Analyzed, Suggestions fly. Charges made. But the skid is unsubsiding. Mostly, it's a choice thing. Black kids from Maui to Maine to Miami are far more magnetized by basketball and football. It's often about style, individual personality and exposure.

N.C. State then went on to defeat Marquette, 76-64, to claim the first national championship for the Wolfpack. He earned All-Eastern Regional team, Final Four all-Tournament team and Converse all-America honors following the 1974 national championship. A three-time all-ACC selection, Towe posted a remarkable 79-7 overall record during his three year career, including an amazing 57-1 stretch from 1972-73 (27-0) and 1973-74 (30-1). The Wolfpack won two ACC titles in 1972-73 and 1973-74. Towe did not lose a conference game until his senior season. He also assisted coach Eddie Biedenbach at the University of North Carolina - Ashville from 1996-1999. UNC-Ashville won back-to-back Big South regular season championships in 1997 and 1998.

    AP Sports Writer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - New Orleans coach Monte Towe almost had it all Saturday - the standing ovation, the best player on the floor and the pace of play he preferred.
But the victory belonged to No. 4 Florida.
Udonis Haslem scored 20 points to lift the Gators to a 76-60 victory over New Orleans and Towe, a former Florida assistant who returned to the O'Connell Center for the first time since he and head coach Norm Sloan left in 1989.
Hector Romero had 29 points and 19 rebounds for New Orleans (5-7), but neither that, nor Florida's 5-for-27 shooting from 3-point range, was enough to prevent the Gators (9-1) from winning for the eighth straight time.
Towe, in his first season at New Orleans, learned firsthand what anyone who follows Florida hoops already knows: The Gators, now coached by Billy Donovan, have changed a lot over the past dozen years.

    ART SEX AND THE SONICS
David Shields and Matthew Stadler Talk Sex, Race, Class, and Basketball
    DAVID SHIELDS AND
Matthew Stadler are both writers, both live in Seattle, and both love basketball. But they think about basketball in ways that would probably not fly on ESPN SportsCenter . Shields' recent book, Black Planet is an obsessive diary of a season spent following the Sonics, particularly their star point guard, Gary Payton; Shields primarily swims through the vast undercurrents of racial politics which suffuse basketball. Stadler's article on the Sonics a few years back in this paper explored the confused sexuality and man-boy role-playing in basketball. Both are intrigued by the voyeurism, submerged homoeroticism, and ego projection that undergirds basketball fandom. And both are fans themselves. The Stranger got them together for an e-mail dialogue recently; here is an edited transcript of their sessions. Eric Fredericksen MATTHEW: David, your book convincingly locates NBA action in such homoerotic territory white men looking at, idolizing, envying, loving black men's bodies. While I don't experience the race dynamic so totally consciously as you do (for instance, Gary Payton is not half as sexy as Sacramento's Jason Williams, I say), I think your point about the manly sex subtext of the NBA was right on. So speaking of Jason Williams, what did you make of the endless repetition locally and nationally, for weeks on end, of that three-second moment last season when Jason Williams froze Gary Payton with a ridiculous move, then blew past him for the lay-up? The intense focus on and savoring of it in the media astonished me. But what I'm wondering is, wasn't all that intensity more of a boyfriend problem than a race thing? It was like the sexiest new boy had just arrived in town, and let everyone know it.

Starting Points: Ideas for Planning Drug Education and Prevention Programs
    Athletes with Drug Problems
A thletes often serve as powerful role models for American youth. The vast majority of professional, collegiate, and high school athletes serve as excellent role models, but a tiny minority of athletes are poor roles models. This small minority of poor role models set a terrible example for youth by their highly visible problems with alcohol and other drugs, domestic violence, promiscuous sexual exploits, and criminal behavior. The news media focus attention on these few, because good behavior is not newsworthy. This means that the poor role models often have a negative influence that is grossly disproportionate to their numbers, since the publicity and visibility given the "few bad apples" often creates a misperception that most athletes are drug users. Most professional athletic leagues and college conferences have random drug testing programs that minimize the likelihood of drug use by team members. The NCAA testing program, for example, tests college football players and track and field athletes randomly throughout the year, and other sports are tested in-season during NCAA competition. The NCAA uses the most sophisticated (and expensive) testing technology available, yet the percentage of positive tests is only about 1%. Drug testing programs of professional sports leagues also have a very tiny percentage of positive tests usually 1% or less. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is disproportionately reprsented in the table below, primarily because of marijuana arrests. Of all of the major athlete drug tesing programs, only the NBA does not test for marijuana, because the NBA drug policy does not include marijuana in its list of banned drugs.
