Hall of Famer "Pistol Pete" Maravich was a spectacular showman who helped open up the game of basketball in the 1970s. After a legendary college career at Louisiana State, he played 10 productive seasons in the NBA, earning five trips to the NBA All-Star Game and one league scoring title. Maravich wasn't the first player to dribble behind his back or make a deft between-the-legs pass. But his playground moves, circus shots, and hotdog passes were considered outrageous during his era and, perhaps because he cultivated a freewheeling image, some basketball purists felt he was more style than substance.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich
P ete Maravich was an offensive genius. He could do things with a basketball others hadn't even dreamed possible. Always a crowd pleaser, he was a dynamic scorer. "He was an American phenomenon, a stepchild of the human imagination," admired Rich Kelley, one of Maravich's teammates. "He could do things with a basketball that I've never seen anybody do." admired Warriors great Rick Barry. Maravich played his college ball at LSU, for his coach/dad Press Maravich (a former pro). LSU was a football college, but the Maravich's were out to change that. Maravich scored 43.8, 44.2, and 44.5 ppg in the 1968-1970 varsity seasons, leading the NCAA in scoring each year. He scored 50 plus points in an amazing 28 games! He owns NCAA records for points in a season (1,381), points in a career (3,667), highest career scoring average (44.2 ppg), most field goals made in a career (1,387), and most field goals attempted (3,166). All of this without a three point shot! It is estimated if there had been a three point shot, Maravich would have averaged over 50 ppg each year! Pete then went on to the NBA, drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. However, his teammates never really accepted this high paid, high rated rookie. Maravich finished a close second in Rookie of the year voting. Eventually he went to the New Orleans Jazz, a struggling franchise team, then the Celtics. After a ten year, 5-time all-star, career, he retired. He had led the league in scoring in 1977 with a 31.1 ppg average, and held a career average of 24.2 ppg.

Maravich is the greatest scorer in college basketball...an amazing feat that was accomplished in 3 years (freshmen were inelgible for play). Maravich's playing style of dazzling passes and shots has not been matched by anyone. Maravich is a member of basketball's Hall of Fame and was voted 1 of the top 50 players of all time at the NBA's 50th anniversary.

"PISTOL" PETE MARAVICH
Basketball's Greatest Showman
Pete was not only basketball's greatest entertainer and showman of all time, but one of it's best players.  Most basketball fans are familiar with his scoring achievements, but Pete was an all around player with professional career averages of 5.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game.  He was a flashy persona, with his trade mark floppy socks; behind the back dribbling; and no-look, between the legs passes.  Don't be confused by all of this - Pete was very fundamentally sound.  He was an inspiration on and off the court.  His exciting style may be what drew you to Pete originally, but his "family value" demeanor post basketball is what makes him admirable for eternity.  I'm glad to see my boyhood idol and nickname sake is being remembered and honored amongst the greats of the game.

    Pete Maravich
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pete Maravich June 22 January 5 ), known in the basketball world as Pistol Pete , was a legendary player who starred in college and for three NBA teams.
Born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania , Pete had seemed to marvel his family and friends with his basketball ability since he was little. His father Press Maravich , former player turned coach, showed Pete the fundamentals starting at age 7. Pete would spend hours practicing ball control tricks, passes, head fakes, and long range shots. He decided on the guard position, the only position he would ever play. He attended three high schools as a teen: Daniel High School in Clemson, South Carolina Needham Broughton in Raleigh, North Carolina , and Edward Military Institute in Salemburg, North Carolina . During his years at those schools, he wowed college scouts with his ability to play his favorite sport. And so, in , Pete decided to attend Louisiana State University , where his father was head basketball coach. This is where he, along with his trademark floppy gray socks, became legendary. He scored a record 3,667 points for his career at LSU, which lasted from 1967-1970, and averaged 44.2 points per game for his career, also a record. His records are even more remarkable for two reasons: First, in Maravich's time, freshmen were ineligible for varsity sports - meaning that he only had three years to compile his career point totals instead of the four years today's college players have. Second, he played more than 15 years before the NCAA instituted the three-point field goal. Many of his outside shots would be three-pointers today.

send page My dad thought I was born to play basketball. When I was seven years old, he sat me down and said, ‘Pete, I’m making ninety-six dollars a week. There’s no way I can put you through college. But if you’ll let me teach you basketball, you’ll get a scholarship. Maybe one day you’ll play on the professional level as I did. Maybe you’ll be on a team that wins the world championship, and they’ll give you a big ring!’
My eyes lit up. I wanted that ring more than anything in the world, so I began a strict commitment to basketball. I played six to 10 hours a day during the summer. When my friends went to the lake to swim, I stayed in a 104-degree gym and worked on drills—’homework basketball,’ my dad called it. I went to bed with a basketball until I was 14.
I took my basketball into empty movie theatres and dribbled on the carpeted aisle during movies. I dribbled to and from townfive miles a day. When I got a bike, I learned to dribble while riding it and, later, while hanging out the passenger side of a car.
