2. The ball that is used in this game. Basketball Basketball, fast-paced game played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players. The primary objective of the game is to score more points than the opposition by putting a round ball through a circular band, called a rim. The two rims are at each end of the court, placed 10 ft (3.1 m) above the ground and connected to a backboard, a rectangular board generally 4 by 6 ft (1.2 by 1.8 m). Court and Teams Most basketball courts measure 84 ft (25.6 m) long and 50 ft (15.2 m) wide. Professional courts are slightly larger. Other court dimensions vary, such as the distance of the 3-point line (from beyond which a score counts for 3 points) from the basket. The 3-point line in high school and college games is 19 ft 9 in (6 m) from the basket, while in international play it is 21 ft 6 in (6.6 m) and in professional play it is 22 ft (6.7 m). The rims, or baskets, are 18 in (45.7 cm) in diameter. A white, nylon-mesh net hangs from each basket. The standard basketball is generally orange or brown, with an outer cover of leather or nylon. In men's play, a basketball is 29.5 to 30 in (74.9 to 76.2 cm) in diameter. In women's play the basketball is slightly smaller, 28.5 to 29 in (72.4 to 73.7 cm) in diameter.

Payton's walk backs up his talk

They played a scene from "Rudy" on the big scoreboard, just before the tipoff. You know Rudy, the lovable underdog who took a pay cut to only $4.5 million before he walked on at Notre Dame. The Lakers are not Seabiscuit, or Rocky, or Chaminade. But they're pretty good when they play like it. Shaquille O'Neal nearly earned a standing ovation when he roll-blocked Hedo Turkoglu in search of a loose ball. Karl Malone lunged out of bounds to save a basketball that he handed to Devean George, who skipped it to the other sideline, where Gary Payton extended himself to catch it and bounce it off Emanuel Ginobili, and out of bounds again. After the Hickory High Lakers warmed hearts all over the Basin by whipping San Antonio, 105-81, Payton somehow found a few leftover words of defiance:

http://www.cobleskill.edu/Athletics/MensBasketball/Releases/apr1204.htm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: COBLESKILL’S PRINCE JACKSON NAMED NJCAA FIRST TEAM BASKETBALL ALL-AMERICAN The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team member Prince Jackson, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, has been named a First Team All-American for the 2003-04 season. The 6’6” senior swingman led the Fighting Tigers to a 25-7 overall record marking the tenth consecutive season the Cobleskill program has reached the twenty-win plateau in route to the program’s twelfth consecutive NJCAA Region III Tournament appearance. “Without a doubt, Prince is one of the best players that we have had in the program during my time as head coach and we are very proud of what he has accomplished,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “People always ask me about who is the best player that I’ve coached at Cobleskill and I’ve always make it a point not to answer that question. However if someone were to come up to me and tell me that Prince is the best player we’ve ever had here, I’m not sure that I could argue against that statement. Prince’s high school coach Mark Sausville told me that we were getting a very good basketball player when we signed Prince and he was absolutely correct. Beyond that, Prince is a credit to his family and his community. We’re going to miss him next season on many levels.” During the season, Jackson averaged 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game in 32 starts for the Fighting Tigers this season. The 6’6” swingman connected on 252 of 545 attempts from the field for a 48.1% mark on the year including an impressive 53 of 139 from beyond the three-point stripe. The Cobleskill co-captain also hit on 102 of 143 attempts from the charity stripe for a 71.3 % average. He closes his career as the program leader in career scoring with 1132 points and finishes fourth in career rebounding with 457 boards. Jackson was recently selected as the Region III Player-of-the-Year and to the Region’s First Team be the region’s coaches along with being named as the Mountain Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year and selected to the league’ First Team by the conference’s coaches. Jackson was also a First Team All-Mountain Valley Conference and the First Team NJCAA All-Region III honors during his freshman campaign.

June 2000 Did you enjoy doing the Channel 4 show? YES. ESPECIALLY THE FIRST YEAR. I THOUGHT THOSE SHOWS WERE REALLY GROUND-BREAKING. I FELT THAT WE WERE ONTO SOME SHIT. NOT ONLY WERE THEY FUN, I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOOD. Why did it finish? OUR AGREEMENT/CONTRACT HAD EXPIRED WITH THE NBA. PLUS, THE DIRECTION AND DEDICATION OF THE SHOW WAS CHANGING AND THERE WAS A CHANCE THAT MARK WEBSTER AND I WEREN'T GOING TO BE WORKING TOGETHER - AND TO ME THAT WAS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I WAS THERE ANYWAY. BESIDES, BEV IS A LOT BETTER LOOKING THAN ME. Would you do the show again? NOT REALLY. I'M DOING WORK WITH THE NBA TRYING TO BUILD UP THEIR TV NETWORK, NBA.COMTV. TELEVISON IS JUST A FUN THING TO DO FOR ME, IT'S REALLY NOT MY THING-THING. I'M STILL A JOURNALIST AT HEART. We know what you and Mark are doing now, but what's Dave up to? DLNY I THINK IS DOING SOME FREELANCE WORK WITH MTV. LAST I TALKED TO HIM HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO LA. THAT'S MY DAWG, I WISH THE BEST FOR HIM ALWAYS.

Thursday, March 07, 2002 Veteran Jackson signs 1-year deal Team saves money against salary cap

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Offensive tackle John Jackson signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Bengals, who made use of a new provision in the collective bargaining agreement that makes veterans less of a salary-cup burden. The provision allows a veteran earning the $750,000 minimum to earn more than his actual cap count, which is $450,000. Jackson's deal is worth $775,000, and the Bengals saved $325,000 against the salary cap. He received $25,000 up front. Some veterans had been squeezed out of jobs because of their minimum salary requirements in favor of less expensive rookies or younger players. The Bengals chose not to exercise their $800,000 option March1 on Jackson's two-year contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. The 2002 season will be Jackson's third for his hometown Bengals and 15th in the NFL. He is a graduate of Woodward High School. Last season, he played in 11 games and became the 171st NFL player to play in 200 career games.
