Given this book's publication date of 1903, I'd say it has held up remarkably well. It goes without saying that it is the great grandaddy of all coincidences that the names of the artists working back then are identical to some working today. It just goes to show you what a family business sequential art really is.

You want to go searching for the thing that's missing around the Kings lately, you almost need to take a number. In these parts, everybody's an investigator. Maybe it has something to do with Chris Webber's awkward return to the mix. Maybe it's about Brad Miller coming off the bench. It could have something to do with how often Doug Christie brings his A game, or with Rick Adelman's substitution patterns, or Vlade Divac's caffeine quotient. All plausible. But it's funny how those conversational roads eventually wind their way back together - and dead-end at the place where Bobby Jackson sits idling. It has been a month now since Jackson went to the injured list with the tricky abdominal strain that continues to elude easy predictions about his return, and there's just no further evidence needed than those four weeks to settle the argument about whose team the Kings are.

OAKLAND - And not to get just overly dramatic about it so soon, but: One and done. You went looking for the Kings last night, looking for the team once famous for its heart and its fight and its ability to grasp the moment. You got a team that the head coach didn't recognize, that the power forward with the lousy knee and the non-superstar game had to bite his tongue in the locker room afterward to avoid ripping apart, verb by verb. Those are action words, not that anyone from the Kings would recognize them right about now. A 97-91 loss to the stinking Golden State Warriors, with so much on the line? You half expected Red Klotz to come out for the postgame interview session. Sacramento is a No. 4 seed in the Western Conference playoffs this morning only because Nos. 5 through 8 are already occupied. The Kings played like a 9, maybe a 10. Film at 11.

36. Applications Of Complex Systems: Sports And Complexity
is a law of physics, which is well understood in basketball, smaller players t KobeBryant, but it was Scotty Pippen who was pestering mark jackson mercilessly
http://necsi.org/guide/examples/basketballcomplexity.html
Applications of Complex Systems: Sports and Complexity
by Yaneer Bar-Yam Complexity of team play: Basketball Complexity is a measure of the number of possibilities. In the context of sports, an effective defense has to meet the possible choices of the offense. Thus, the number of possible ways a player or team can create an offense is important. If a player or team has a more diverse set of offensive plays, the other side may not be able to defend against each play. The plays that it cannot defend against can be exploited. In basketball, this applies for two individuals playing one-on-one and for two teams playing against each other. The 2000 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers can serve to illustrate this principle both at the individual and at the team level [note: I was a fan of the Pacers in this competition]. Shaquille (Shaq) O'Neil the 7'1", 315 lb. center of the Lakers is often called the most dominant player in basketball. When he has the ball near the basket, his opponents often send two or three rather than only one player to defend. He often scores anyway, averaging nearly 30 points per game during the 99-00 season, the best in the sport. Clearly his size has something to do with his success. However, when he talks about his abilities to defeat players in one-on-one play, he says that he can defeat his opponent because he has over thirty different moves. Mark Jackson, the point guard of the Pacers, is the player who, for most of the game, is responsible for bringing the ball from one end of the court to the other. The reason he does this is to set up the offensive play after the Pacers regain the ball from the Lakers. However, Mark does essentially the same thing every time while he is taking the ball up court. This consistency reflects the incredible reliance of the Pacers on his ability to set up the play for the offense. The problem is that an opponent who recognizes this can attack at this point, and the Pacers have almost no alternative.

F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! CATEGORY AVG PER GAME STND DEV STND DEV/AVG Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Treys Free Throws FG% In the same manner the fantasy stiffs can be identified. Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.
